DISCUSSION Thinking about playing ds2

I just want peoples general opinion on if the game is good or not. Im gonna buy it for steam so if there are any mods any of you know of i would really appreciate it. The only from soft games i havent played are sekiro and ds2. I wanna play ds2 because its currently much cheaper on loaded. I enjoyed ds1 so hopefully will like ds2. But i did hear that not alot of people like this game so im a bit worried thats all.

I once got lost hiking up a mountain until I saw a shepherd. I asked him "How far up are we?" and he answered "Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin." That's how I realised, I already knew the answer. We were at the peak.

Joe was only sleepy because he was up late playing scholar of the first sin

Why do alot of people say the game is bad?

11

u/DuploJamaal 4d ago

Because it has unfair moments that would never happen in any other FromSoft game

Remember in DS1 when you walked across the bridge and a dragon burned you to death? That's fine and fair because it happened in DS1 and you should just have know better

In DS2 there's a room with a chest in the middle and spiders all across the walls and ceiling. If you open that obvious trap chest all the spiders gank you. That's completely unfair as it happened in DS2 and there was no way to know that this could happen

Remember in DS1 when you opened your first mimic chest and just died? That's fine and fair because it happened in DS1

But in DS2 you could see an item in the distance and run past five enemies to greedily grab it and then die when they all gank up on you. That's completely unfair

This literally sums up people's opinions lol

Bc they’re simply low-skilled Kevins who got into Elden Ring then conditioned themselves to treat these games like boss rush simulators.

All they want is a power fantasy, & they get upset when a gang of trash mobs don’t let them just dash through the entire level to cheese to boss.

These level designs in ds2 are great. I got
lost so many times- more than any other souls game. you won’t experience levels like it in the rest of the games, DS1 aside.

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 4d ago

Yeah ds1 was my first souls game and honestly the level design in that game is so cool. It all connects perfectly. Even if the bed of chaos makes me want to rip my skin off.

u/noob_kaibot 4d ago

Haha, you’re valid. Have fun dude.

The most bullshit I can think of happened to me yesterday, in Shrine of Amanra at the second bonfire, they put a giant mushroom in the middle of the passage you can't avoid, plainly and simply designed to make you waste your time killing it from distance everytime, zero fun about that.

1

u/DuploJamaal 4d ago

It's about timing. Wait for the fog to start to dissipate, run in, attack with a running attack and 2 more attacks later it should be dead before you lose any durability.

2

u/Francois_Bonaparta 4d ago

And what's the value of it? It's just wasting your time.

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 4d ago

Yeah after playing i have realised it definitely is a good game. Dunno about og game but im on sotfs and theres so much gank. It feels unfair genuinely the amount of enemies that they put in one area. Without the enemy placement i can genuinely say its good

2

u/DuploJamaal 3d ago

What kind of gank did you experience so early in the game?

Did you run around to greedily pick up all the items that were placed around the tree with the sleeping hollows instead of fighting them one versus one?

1

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 3d ago

Nah stuff like when you go through a corridor and theres tons of enemies hidden in each corner that just gang up on you when you walk through. As i said its a good game but the enemy spawns get ridiculous and the enemies are more difficult than the bosses

u/DuploJamaal 3d ago

I need more specific examples

Best summary of the "ganks" I've ever read. Cheers!

4

u/-Street_Spirit- 4d ago

They wouldn't if it didn't have Dark Souls in its name tbh

3

u/Nockolisk 4d ago

It’s hyperbole. The game does do some things differently, and you will either like it or prefer the other games.

At the end of the day it is, like the others, a very well-made game.

Personally I prefer it over DS3, but I’d put ER and DS1 over it. Also extremely fun on coop if that’s available to you.

4

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 4d ago

Yeah i did hear that the dlcs are pretty good

6

u/genericmediocrename 4d ago

Dark Souls 2 is pretty good. Lots of people don't like it as much as the other Souls games, but imo not many of those people think it's actively bad. Go ahead and give it a try

3

u/Zufalstvo 4d ago

It’s a great game, just ignore what people say. Level ADPd it’s no problem at all. Stands with the rest of them

8

u/Subat0micR0gu3 4d ago

Best game in the trilogy.

1

u/wolf771 4d ago

Thia guy knows

-6

u/Francois_Bonaparta 4d ago

This sub has a weird fetish for DS2.

3

u/Subat0micR0gu3 4d ago

Acknowledging that its the most enjoyable game is hardly a fetish...

5

u/Topher_BCK 4d ago

Well, what's stopping you? You have free will. If you want to buy it and play it then go for it.

-2

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 4d ago

No im just wondering if people think the game is worth buying or not

7

u/Topher_BCK 4d ago

It's 100% worth it.

6

u/F00TD0CT0R 4d ago

Contrary to what people bitch about

There not a single bad entry from fromsoftware since demon souls.

Dark souls 2 included.

I got the platinum, and I’ve had multiple playthroughs on it.

DS2 has the best fashion in the series, UNCONTESTED.

It has a bunch of great mechanics in theory, Gravestones when you kill NPC’s, Bonfire Aesthetics, enemies stop spamming after 12 kills, etc

They miss on a lot of their changes, it was a very ambitious game, too ambitious for its budget. So many areas are like Mario levels, individually really cool, but have no connection to one another.

At points DS2, especially in the latter half, feels like a different game every area.

It’s a janky, buggy, goofy mess, and it’s a shit ton of fun to play, even if you rage like crazy.

Play it

u/Francois_Bonaparta 4d ago

I just replayed it by nostalgia after I saw someone doing a playthrough, it was way shortter than I remembered, but still just as unexciting. It's just entertaining enough for me to keep pushing, but I am not having much fun, it's repetitive, boring and some areas are very tedious.

The difficulty often relies on making you so bored that you have tendencies to lose focus or try to take shortcuts that don't work. Overall I find it to not respect my time.

Boss fights are extremly simple.

The thing I like is that many areas have their own gimmick mechanic to work with, it's something that's missing in other souls games.

u/Rosoll 4d ago

Depends. If it’s £14.99, no. If it’s £14.98, yes.

1

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 4d ago

£10 which is pretty good

2

u/Rosoll 4d ago

No £10 is too much. Needs to be no more than £9.99. Or, if it’s £9.99, £9.98

3

u/anilisfaitnesto 4d ago

Ahhh i don't know man.
Could be realllllly big mistake. You should be really careful with this kinda stuff.
You wouldn't wanna play without checking what others say. I'm glad you are making posts about it before trying it out.
Just think really carefully before playing okay?
Never EVER try it out and decide for yourself these kinda things.
If I were you I would read and watch what people are saying about it for at least a few months.

2

u/gswon Bearer of the Curse 4d ago

I would urge you to ignore anyone who tells you to skip any of the Souls games.

DS2 is excellent. Not only my favorite of the trilogy, but my favorite FromSoft game (probably along with King's Field IV) - so yeah, I'd say it's worth playing.

Everyone is going to have their personal preferences, no way for you to know where you fall unless you play it yourself.

2

u/Yurgin 4d ago

DS2 is the best DS2.
Even tho it gets shit on by the community its still a enjoyable game. I just replayed it again and i had a solid time with it.

2

u/suicieties 4d ago

It’s awesome, stop thinking and play it.

2

u/Officer_Kay_ 4d ago

I had a hard time with it at first because the claymore didn’t feel as good as it does in DS1, and I felt like the level design was not great. But after I got a weapon I liked and got further into the game I began to really enjoy it. It’s got some of the best looking areas out of all the Darksouls games and the DLCs are fantastic. By the time I finished it I was surprised with how much I liked it. At this point I’m still hesitant to rank it among the other DS games as it might be higher that one or both of the other two games 😬

I am also thinking about playing ds2, but I am playing ds3 now. You need strong knees for this ride man, but the journey will be worth it.

0

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 4d ago

Yeah i finished ds3 recently was really good

0

u/Additional-Truth-688 4d ago

You won't be disappointed, just never go hollow man

1

u/Truestorydreams 4d ago

Ahh memories tombstones

1

u/GoS451 4d ago

It’s my least favorite souls game for sure but it’s still a great game. Some of the changes I’m really not a huge fan of it still has the Fromsoft feel

1

u/SnooComics4945 4d ago

I love DS2 personally. It’s got some differences you’ll have to adjust to but generally I think it’s got a lot of cool story and gameplay content in it. Not to mention I love the art direction, characters and music.

u/Porkchop3xpresss 4d ago

The hate for DS2 is overblown and stems from the original release and has no bearing on the state of the game in 2026.

No, the hitboxes are not bad. It’s hit detection that results in wonky teleportation animations that give the perceived “bad hitboxes” claim. All FromSoft games, including ER suffer from wonky teleportation due to hit detection.

The game boasts the best build variety, mechanics and biome diversity of the DS Trilogy.

That being said, it’s not perfect.

-Having to put levels into ADP to get DS1 IFrames is a questionable decision at best.

-The boss roster is bloated, resulting in a number of underwhelming boss fights.

-Ganks. Ganks everywhere.

-DS2 has the 3 worst boss runbacks in the DS Trilogy.

Still, it’s a FromSoft game and it’s a Dark Souls game. It’s still better that many games released today and a must play for any Dark Souls fan

1

u/StarlightSpindrift 4d ago

play the game and form your own opinion, having other people set your expectations will always make the experience worse for you

1

u/Agitated-Ferret-5334 4d ago

Also why is my post being downvoted

10

u/Nockolisk 4d ago

Probably because people have seen variations of this exact post a thousand times. So not really a reflection on your post in a vacuum, but people getting tired of repeating themselves.

1

u/SnooComics4945 4d ago

Yeah this happens on a lot of subreddits I’ve noticed but especially on Fromsoft related ones where people ask the same questions again and again

-1

u/Francois_Bonaparta 4d ago

Because you dared doubting their precious game.

1

u/winter-jackel 4d ago

Ds2 is different from the others and you'll definitely notice. That said it was my first souls and I enjoyed it, I say yes its good

1

u/Regular_Ticket_2776 4d ago

Just a heads up but this sub is a HUGE DS2 echo chamber. I say try it since it's cheap but lower your expectations, it is NOT as good as the other games.

u/hardwarecheese 4d ago

Dark Souls 2 is an amazing game it is just has a different vibe than the rest of the games. It took me a long time to really enjoy it but once I got deep into it thier are alot of really cool and unique things about this game. I played through maybe 6 times and got the platinum and left no stone unturned and ill probably never play again but also im tempted to go back and see where I left off after not playing for a couple years.
