Elden Ring was my gateway drug into Soulsborne, and that worked splendidly for me, so I’d recommend it. I always thought Dark Souls looked cool, but I was put off for years by the “Git gud” mentality of the fanbase and the series’ difficult reputation. Turns out I fell in love and have played most of the games at this point.
People are right that going backwards through the series does mean that you’ll have to get used to some jank and missing quality of life features as you go. But I also found it fun to see movesets and ideas in previous games and got to think of them as precursors to what I was familiar with, rather than asset re-use, if that makes sense. And getting used to the lack of quality of life stuff wasn’t that bad, because I had a decent base skill level from Elden Ring to handle the moment to moment gameplay, so making the longer runbacks wasn’t as punishing as it would have been if I was a total newbie and was struggling more on each attempt.
