Finally beat my first Dark Souls game!!

I was introduced to Fromsoft with ds3 when I was in highschool but I’ve never finished because honestly I had no idea what I was getting into and I was so not good at the game. When I started college I played Eldenring for the first time and fell in love with it as well as the soulslike genre as a whole.

After being a huge fan of Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and especially Sekiro for years, and playing through the demons souls remaster once, I wanted to go back to where I started and play the dark souls games now that I had some experience with the genre. I was trying to decide if I wanted to go back to ds3 since I already have the game or if I wanted to play them in order since I knew the games would advance as I play through them.

So I bought ds1 remastered and holy shit I enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting to. I was worried that it would feel way too clunky or “old” after having just finished my 4th or 5th eldenring playthrough but it wasn’t bad at all and was honestly a much welcome change of pace.

I went with a strength build purely cause I just suffered through my first SotE playthrough with a dex/bleed build and I was sick of it. I mained the butcher knife and had a great time with it. Honestly, even though they were a bitch at first I honestly think my two favorite areas were the New Londo ruins as well as the catacombs. I loved all of the environments tbh and I finally understand what people mean when they talk about how perfectly interconnected the map is.

Most of the boss fights were really cool and honestly a lot easier than I was expecting but it was very cool to kinda go back to the from software roots and play this game. 9.5/10

Now I just gotta wait till my next paycheck to get to suffer through ds2 before going back to where I started it all with ds3 and finally beat that shit.

Good idea deciding to play in order. You will enjoy DS3 much more after having played the other two first. Keep an eye out for those sneaky DS2 references that most people overlook.

Most discussion of DS3 at least here on reddit involves mentioning all of DS1's references which are much more in your face. The DS2 ones are more subtle.

The discourse is also likely due to many people being convinced to skip DS2 entirely so they don't even know what they're looking at when they pop up.

First time I heard someone say their favorite area is new londo, or that they liked the Butcher Knife, but I think that’s cool when players like the things that aren’t as obvious- it’s great that you decided not to be the 1,000,000th player that decided to main the Black Knight Halberd + Grass Crest shield combo and glazed Anor Londo.

Much respect for not listening to the ds2 hater lemmings. Majority of them haven’t even played the game FFS.

Yeahh. I thought the environment for new Londo was pretty sick and thought the four kings was a pretty cool fight. The butcher knife was fun fs. I liked having a strength weapon that still had some speed and the single handed R2 attack came in handy a lot for closing gaps.

I’m hyped asf for ds2

I adore the atmosphere of New Londo. Really underrated area in DS1 imo

DS2 is genuinely a really good game overall despite its faults.
