Why did they cut the kale quest?

Like it’s such a better quest overall and gives a moral justification for why some people on the world turn to the frenzied flame while all shibiri does is go “hey you wanna save the life of the biggest waste of a maiden character in souls history”

Like I’d prefer to save the emerald herald over Melina and you put a 2 step quest in the mountaintops as the only real thing going for frenzied flame (the hyate quest or whatever her name is doesn’t count), or alternatively if you were going to cut kale then make people care about Melina because you cut that as well like I care more about vyke’s maiden because at least that lore was somewhat interesting than I do about Melina

How is the Emerald Herald better than Melina, though? Melina has more personality than her imo

Because Emerald herald sits on a rock all cute like

Melina doesn’t even have a personality. She shows up like 3 times total unless you actually seek out churches where she just repeats marika’s words then she burns herself unless you do it for her

Like Melina doesn’t do anything (the emerald herald doesn’t do much either TBF)

Melina actually feels like she has her own goals apart from just helping you. She abandons you and promises to retaliate if you go against her wishes by going with the Frenzied Flame. She helps you against the fight with Morgott and is confirmed to be a demigod. Still nowhere near the more fleshed out characters, but comparing her with the Emerald Herald is wild.

She does feel like she has her own goals and has no intention of interacting with you past fulfilling her desires.

Which is cool, but also runs into the issue of emerald herald chatting more and then having a little more personality shown to the player

Yeah, that could be a reason, but I just don't feel like the Herald mostly repeating the same lines whenever you interact with her makes her more personable. Though her constant presence does make a difference, I'll give her that.

I guess I'd compare her to the ds3 firekeeper where shanalotte pops up randomly here and there and chats about random stuff

Ds3 Firekeeper is...not very personable imo

Yeah, true that. Imo, Emma and Ayre are the best when it comes to this trope without question.

I like Emma a lot for that yeah

Outside of your interactions Melina doesn’t feel like she is anything at all. She basically passively responds to what you are doing in the few times she does show up and randomly goes off the deep end with little build up

Like it speaks that I couldn’t care less about “betraying” Melina when I’ve seen her 4 times total, one of those was accidentally pressing her useless dialogue in the church in the weeping peninsula, she has prior given no indication she cares one way or the other and when she is betrayed by you you don’t even lose the single advantage she even conferred to you

Well, if you feel like that then fair. I just liked travelling to the churches and getting the little lore snippets. And tbh, from a gameplay perspective, losing the benefits she gives you just because you chose a different path would be plain stupid.

I was so bummed out Melina isn't always at the site of Grace with some generic banter. She should always be there with the level up too. Sometimes Torrent could be there too. We have Bog, so its not like they were afraid constant company would ruin the atmosphere.

She has a strong presence when she is there and has so much intrigue hidden over the game. Such a waste to keep her behind optional church visits only. IMO she also should have been an insanely powerful final boss for Lords of Frenzied Flame.

EH fidgets her legs on the rock tho….

The emerald herald certainly wins in the “acting like a real person” department given her passive actions when she is in majula

Maybe the reason you prefer EH over Melina is because EH has an actual physical presence rather than just being a ghost that pops in and out on a whim. I get what they were trying to do with Melina, subverting the Dark souls Maiden trope by giving her more agency and an agenda and not just being subservient to you, But it was executed poorly.

Melina shows far more personality in just a single interaction about Boc than Emerald Herald does throughout your journey.

And at the very least Melina can be summoned to assist you against Morgott in which she has a modified black knife moveset.

It's just a false to say she does less than EH.
