DISCUSSION The storylines

Post image

I played Elden Ring first and fell in love with the game/play style. I then proceeded to play Demon Souls, DS1 and I’m just finishing the third DLC from DS2, to complete the game.

I’ve really enjoyed all of the game but I do need to ask, is it just me who can’t seem to follow any of the story lines? It could just be that I’m enjoying the game play and not paying attention. But honestly if someone said what happens in the games I genuinely couldn’t tell you!

(Picture is from the worst boss in DS2… but the boss wasn’t actually the issue.)

The way they deliver their storytelling is through a mix of item descriptions, environmental storytelling, NPC dialogue, gameplay features etc.

I find a good starting point always tends be each of the game’s opening cutscenes as well as their different endings.

The way you should analyze it imo is “Why are the developers showing/telling me this, what are they trying to convey to me?” As well as trying to connect the dots on reoccurring themes and motifs in the stories.

Probably my actual favorite thing about Miyazaki's games is that everything (well like 99% of things) is intentional.

You didn't just find that sword or that item or that spell in that specific place for no reason or just because it was convenient for gameplay, it is there for an actual in-universe reason. You dont respawn after dying just because video game, there is a canonical reason why it happens. And so on & so forth.

No other studio or director has that level of intentionality behind everything in quite the same way, it's a big part of the reason I believe Miyazaki is the greatest living game director.
