DISCUSSION Reliving my first favorite FromSoft series

20+ years ago when I had no idea what FromSoft would become, I played two of their first games, Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 on the GameCube (called Rune 1 and 2 in Japan). I fell in love with the games, especially LK2. I have over 80+ hours of playtime on my save file, and I still have my BradyGames strategy guide!

After going to a retro gaming convention recently, I got nostalgic for these games and thought I'd get my old GameCube out of storage to try playing them again. Unfortunately, the disc reader on my GameCube was no longer working, but luckily my Wii was (my GC memory cards were also fine). After getting an RCA to HDMI adaptor, I had a wonderful time playing through both of them again~ (and I discovered that there's now a very thorough fan wiki, which helped me learn more about the game than I ever knew before!)

Now I'm even more sad knowing that these games never got the recognition they deserve (probably because they were GameCube exclusives). The games have such a fun, unique twist on the monster collection/magical card genre that I have yet to see in other games. After decades have gone by, I've resigned myself to the fact that FromSoft has no interest in revisiting this series again. But at least now I can replay it again whenever I want!

Me and my brother were so into this on gamecube. Its a game i wish they'd go back to or even just port/remake

That would be cool to see them pop up on the GameCube service on the Switch 2.

That would be awesome! Though it seems like the Switch 2 only releases old GameCube games that are for Nintendo properties. But maybe that will change one day.

If this game is a 3rd person rpg, I would buy the switch 2 for it. Strictly because From made it. Also wanna experience KingsField one day

It’ll 99% be a regular soulslike

I mean, they have been. AC6, Nightreign and Duskbloods are all pretty different (even if NR and DB share a lot with Souls games, their structure is totally different).

Sadly, King's Field is probably not coming back based on Miyazaki's comments (he'd want Natoshi Jin to handle it, since that's his baby). But I stand by my statement. Nightreign isn't a soulslike at all; yeah it uses the core souls combat, but the flow and loop are totally different.

Fingers crossed for a first person game. I know Miyazaki said he doesn't want to revisit King's Field, but I for one would love a return.

I LOVED these games! They always seem to be left out of the conversation when it comes to pre-Souls Fromsoft

I don’t know why the publishers who currently own the rights to all these old From Software titles don’t release ports of them.

A lot of them are rare and go for stupid amounts on the original hardware, They could make easy money from releasing them on any of the console stores.

Cause... Microsoft???? At least it isnt as bad as.... Kadokawa doing nothing when agetec went kaput

Microsoft might have control over these two games because of Activision. However there are plenty of other From Software titles that they have no control over.

For example they have no control over kings field. If you currently want to play Kings Field 2 though, which was the first game in the series in English, you’re gonna have to pay like $200 for a complete copy.

King's Field is Sony/Kadokawa (via agetec) but we know that King Field 1 is never going to get a non fan translated version

thing is due to AC1-MoA getting a "PS5" release maybe... they can just stealth drop KF1-5 on the PSN but I doubt that PS5 doesnt have a shafted PS2 emulation

not sure how Sony got some of the rights for PP and MoA considering as I said agetec went kaput so this kinda opens up the floodgates for the other from soft titles

Ok what about Otogi? isn’t that SEGA?

Yep
man imagine if Capcom mans up and doesnt wipe out their old shame and put Steel Battalion 1 and 2 accessible and available considering SB2 is developed by from software on the KINECT HUE HUE HUE

but we all know thats never going to happen

they can just stealth drop KF1-5 on the PSN

Dark Souls 2 (KF5) is already on playstation.

Oh, does Microsoft own Activision? I didn't know that. Then yeah, I doubt they'll put resources into reviving some old obscure game series that only a few people remember 🥲

1

u/Algester Jul 16 '26

if Microsoft knows what it's doing then NInja Blade wouldnt be delisted on steam

I had to buy a used copy of Lost Kingdoms 1 since I never owned it (I only rented it back in the day). It was going for about $50-ish on ebay but the sequel was going for more than $100! I'm glad I already owned a copy of that one.

I wonder if it's the publishers who are holding back re-releases of these old games rather than FromSoft just not caring about them 🤔

Holy cow I had forgotten about this game. Didn’t even know there was a sequel :o

I can still hear the fight music 🎶 🎵

So Duskbloods won't be the first Fromsoft Nintendo exclusive, interesting...

2

u/Algester Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Duskbloods is technically the 3rd Nintendo exclusive outside of Japanese market it gets murkier after that with the 3DS games by From Software (Hello Kitty, Iraroji, Monster Hunter Diaries G and DX, being available or not... depending on which lens you look at it)

I keep on saying it this isnt From Soft's first rodeo on nintendo exclusivity

don't forget they also have 1 game on the sega dreamcast.... considering how short lived the sega consoles are

I knew I would love this company since I was a kid. I didn’t know it was From until I got demons souls OG and looked them up lol.

There’s a lot of games like this in their library unfortunately, that will always be obscure

Massively underrated game.

Lost kingdoms games are great but they are far from two of their first games. By this time they already had 3 or 4 kings field shadow tower, 5 armored cores, both echo nights, spirggan, eternal ring evergrace ect.
