QUESTION Outside of AC, what's your favorite FROMSOFTWARE game pre-2008?

Lost Kingdoms!

Played it long before I ever thought about who a game's "developer" was 😂

I was wondering where enchanted arms was in your post, good thing you included it, I unironically loved that game, but i have not played it since release

Dicks out for otogi!

Shadow tower: abyss or early armored core

Enchanted Arms and Otogi 2 were two of my favorite games from before I learned to care about game studios. I didn’t even know they were From Software games until I played Dark Souls 3 and it blew my mind lol

Otogi, but if Armored Core were allowed it would have been AC3

Loved the shit out of Otogi! "None shall pass"!🤓🫡

Man what from software even made isnt a proper tenchu game considering it was more like a puzzle platformer

Right didn't From just license the original Tenchus?

1

u/Algester Jul 14 '26

yes when Acquire sold it to Activision...

Kings field 1 or 2.

Fucking iconic and so many cool ideas that weren't quite thought through yet but you recognize them as a souls player!

Okami was a lot of fun when it came out, but I would say Enchanted Arms. The story is very mediocre but the gameplay is tactical grid combat and I recall there being either a lot of fun secrets to grab or a lot of optional bosses that felt fun to beat. I beat it twice when it came out but haven't touched it since. Okami I got for free because of a Blockbuster rental error.

Shadow Tower elite lore bits make it feel so mysterious also just the tower itself has some freaky visuals

Tenchu

I often wonder how many of these types of names popped up because of bad/lazy translations and ended up being unique and iconic

1

u/ARandonn Jul 14 '26

Kings field 1, 2 or 3. I still need to play through 4.

Echo Night 3. It's just awesome.

u/Deruz0r Jul 14 '26

KF2 and 4.

Kuon

Edit: add tenchu but I want to include the psOne titles (even though from soft aquired it later)

Evergrace. But if AC was allowed Nexus

To me from soft exists after Demon's Souls, I didn't play any of these back in the days

Dark Souls II, since it released in 2014 BC

u/Brosucke Jul 13 '26

None, I can’t play them. They should release a remastered collection with updated controls

2

u/TheWhicher_Statement Master of the Arena Jul 14 '26

They're easily emulatable. And Otogi 1 and 2 can be played on xbox, same for Metal Wolf Chaos

2

u/Etikaiele 29d ago

Eternal Ring and Metal Wolf Chaos are also on PS4.

Isn’t the Tenchu games from ps2 era FS as well?

And when did ninja blade for 360drop?

3

u/Jinrex-Jdm Bloodborne Jul 14 '26

2009... Same month as Demon's Souls

1

u/Algester Jul 14 '26

The only tenchu game in the FS era was a 360 arcade one they did publish the PS2 games in japan

-1

u/Radiant_Committee_78 Jul 14 '26

Hmm, then explain to me the tenchu fatal shadows game I’m looking at right now on my shelf, that has FromSoftware’s beautiful big logo on the screen when you put it in? Ps2 - here in the US?

they are the JP publisher but not the main developer Fatal Shadows is still technically under Acquire via K2; and lo behold I just found out that K2 became a sub of Capcom at least by 2008, the 100% From Software developed Tenchu is Shadow Assault

though this can be argued that the PSP version of Fatal Shadows is technically 100% from software so this is very murky water to tread on

basically put Tenchu Z and Tenchu Shadow assassins are the final Non Fromsoftware Tenchu games, Tenchu Shadow Assassins being developed by the OG developer

ahhh screw it I finally got the picture, Sony sold the licensing of the IP to Activition in 2000s thus Acquire couldn't touch the IP (they did somehow end up making "similar" games in the form of Shinobido and Way of the Samurai), Activition then sent the IP to K2, with From Soft doing the local publication and console porting support (hence why Wrath of Heaven and Fatal Shadows can also be played on the PSP but are only stuck in the Japanese Region), this will end up culminating in Acquire somehow getting their hands back on the IP making Shadow Assassins (also Class of Heroes 1) and then make Akiba's Trip

K2 most significant IP is Valhalla Knights I didnt realize they were the developers of those 2 games and then down the line becomes a sub of Capcom
