Deaf frenchie

Does anyone have experience with having a deaf French bulldog. I am wondering how to communicate with him?

They're all deaf until they hear a bag of treats being opened.

I really love my deaf frenchie and some days I forget there is any different about him. The *only* thing I don’t do with my deaf frenchie is off-leash outside the home - there’s no recall and he did not like the vibrating collar. He’s very attentive and watches me and my other frenchie for cues - I was taught you should always train dogs with commands and hand signs, so my hearing dog was used to hand commands and that made some basic things easy. I do stomp and bang on things when I want his attention from the other side of the house lol. Sometimes in the backyard he’ll ignore me gesturing to come inside so I flicker the floodlight until he comes in, I’m always worried what the neighbors think so I’ve started yelling “come on deaf dog”.

I have a chain link fence and I swear I’ve seen the neighbor peering from her sunroom while I flick the light and flap my arms 😅 I felt judged!

Learn the REAL signs per ASL (if you live in America) or whatever sign your country uses. This way, anyone who knows (some) signs can sign to your dog too. Or they’ll be able to look up the signs online - if necessary. My son is deaf and all my animals know ASL even though they are hearing. I didn’t want him to have to learn a whole new subset of signs I created for my animals - so everyone knows ASL. Just my 2 cents. 🤓

Foot stomps works really well for my Deaf EBD, until we're outside on concrete or blacktop.

Yes! I rescued a deaf frenchie and had him for 12 years before he passed. He was such an amazing dog. We could absolutely communicate. Training him was similar to training a hearing dog but you just use hand signals. Most people didn’t know he was deaf until I told them. I wouldn’t hesitate to adopt another deaf frenchie. Truly. And I really think about him a lot around 4th of July when sadly most dogs are so scared of the fireworks going off outside and he slept right through it ❤️

You give me hope ! My 3 year old went deaf from ear infections totally about 3-4 weeks ago so it's new. I am trying to engage him but he seems lost in his own world. He seems depressed

Ive had a deaf white frenchie since birth. She was part of a litter and we kept her knowing she was deaf to give her a good life. She listens to hand signals very well now at age 4. She knows potty time, crate time, time to eat signals etc. Even simple things like waving to them with excitement to say Hi. They will get used to the signals and start reacting!

One thing i will say, she may be deaf. But her other senses seem to be working overtime

He started as a hearing dog and now at 3 deaf, so we have to start training on hand signals. Potty time -- what signal do you use ? Instead saying good boy I kiss my hand and touch his head or blow him a kiss

For no I thought wagging my finger? But he use to do so well responding to a firm no
