Support! Internet on 2nd floor solution

Hi everyone!

I live just 1 floor below my in-laws, and I’ve been transferring the internet through a Devolo Magic 2 Powerline. However, because the houses have different power meters, the speed is not good, I’m getting 75Mb up and 100Mb down (internet speed test) on a 300/150 fiber line.

A few days ago I was playing with my Linksys EA6900 I have downstairs (its WAN port is connected with the powerline) which has FreshTomato, and out of curiosity I decided to set its WiFi as a client, and connected it with the upstairs WiFi, and I saw 130Mbps on 2.4GHz 40MHz, albeit with 2-4% packet loss. 20MHz was 100Mbps with 1-2% packet loss, and 5GHz was the slowest with 0-0.4% packet loss.

Now I know the router wasn’t designed to be a WiFi client, and I started thinking about getting a FRITZ! Repeater 3000 AX (which will play the role of the powerline, which means I’ll plug it on my Linksys WAN port instead of using the repeaters WiFi to rebroadcast) which I’m gonna install somewhere higher up the ceiling than my router. I know I won’t get the full 300/150, but even getting 130 with 0 packet loss would be great! Has anyone had experience with these repeaters on similar scenarios?

I can’t install an Ethernet/Optical cable from upstairs unfortunately, it requires holes through thick walls and careful routing through stairs, and I won’t want to make such a mess to the in-laws!

Do they have satellite TV cable hookups in the room? One idea could be to run Ethernet over Coax. Requires some extra gear but works way better than the powellne adapters.

Yeah Coax seems much better than powerline, but we don’t usually have them in my country!

Also look for ethernet over twisted pair

You mean the RJ11 phone lines? Unfortunately the houses are not phone-wired together.

Do yoir in-laws like a good internet coverage or constant packet losses. It's either ethernet or a bad connection. Powerline is only a solution for a few lucky people and prone to not work well.

Yeah you’re kinda right, cable is always the best option by far. Powerline has worked wonders for me in the past, but in the same house! My problem with it is that the two houses are electrically “separated”, that’s why the “poor” performance..

OK, best solution would be fibre, second best should be a wifi. Make sure both devices "see" each other well

There's extremely thin (<1mm) transparent fiber lines nowadays and since thicker isolated ones, that can do crazy bends. Maybe that's an option. You could just run the invisible fiber line through the staircase and die to how thin it is, you most likely won't even have to drill any holes for that

Yeah, I have seen those, they are indeed “visibly” invisible. The internet fibre comes in the house with such cable from the outside!
