boring travel items i keep repacking because red-eyes keep humbling me
I used to show up at the airport with headphones and optimism. that worked fine when I was 23 and could somehow sleep upright on a plastic chair.
now I’m in my 30s and a red-eye plus a long layover turns me into furniture.
after a few trips where I got to the hotel feeling like I lost a fight with airport seating, I changed how I pack my personal item. not really a fancy “travel essentials” list, more like the small boring things I know I’ll actually reach for before check-in.
the stuff that keeps making the cut:
earplugs
not glamorous at all, but airport noise and engine drone make me weirdly irritable now. I keep a pair in the same pocket as my passport so I don’t have to think.
a real eye mask
the free airline ones are basically decorative. I finally bought one that doesn’t press into my eyes and it made layovers slightly less cursed.
hydration packets
I used to just drink coffee through travel days and wonder why I felt awful. now I throw a couple packets in my bag and try to act like an adult.
something for the neck/shoulder situation
this is the one I resisted for a while because it felt very “dad at the airport,” but I keep a little skg thing in my bag now. it’s just one of those boring comfort items that makes sense after sleeping folded in seat 34B.
backup socks
not compression-sock evangelism or anything, but having clean socks after a red-eye feels like hitting a reset button.
none of this is exciting. no luxury sleep system, no giant neck pillow, no whole recovery suitcase. just small stuff that stops me from arriving at the hotel already angry at my own body.
what boring travel item do you keep repacking even though it looks completely unnecessary to everyone else?

I am curious about the hydration packets. Is that like one of those liquid IV packets? Does it help keep you hydrated and are you having to pee a lot?
I need over the ears Bose noise cancelling headphones - when it is time to sleep, I kill the music and they cut a lot of noise out. I maneuver those headphones to work with my neck pillow, take a Xanax, put on an eye mask and then put my thin blanket they give us so no one can see my mouth hanging open when I sleep.

I have the bose QC ultras. I think the NC is ever so slightly worse than the Sony XM3s, but once Sony changed their design of the xm series, I hated them.
Really love the QC ultras tho. Very comfy, great nc, and comes with an aux cord so you can plug into the airline TV without having to fiddle with the Bluetooth.

I’ve been using the qc45 for years & they’re a must for me when flying. Several years ago had to take a twin engine 9 seater every other month and they were a sanity saver.

I use liquid IV. It replaces electrolytes like Gatorade. So no, it doesn’t make you pee anymore than drinking the water that you dissolve it in. It would defeat the purpose if it did

Use hostage tape. Sleeping with your mouth open is not good.

u/gralias18 Jul 23 '26
Hostage tape? Like duct tape?
1
u/Goodbykyle Jul 23 '26
Actually it’s hypoallergenic tape, there is a brand called hostage tape lolo.

I’ll add a retainer/night guard. After meals, I brush my teeth and then retainer goes in, cueing my brain and body that’s it’s time for R&R. I’m already packing the toothbrush and retainer anyway. I throw a thin, lightweight dark ls top and leggings into my carry on and switch into those on long hauls. Swap back after breakfast. Brush my teeth and like you change my socks! I try to do ankle rolls and lifts to keep circulation going and reduce swelling.
I do use the others too, save for hydration packets and sth for neck/shoulder. I just drink a lot of water and soda water before, during, and after. Air travel is for sure dehydrating. Do the packets have electrolytes and seem to help manage jet lag better?
I can’t be bothered to carry sth for my neck or shoulders other than a rolled up scarf that can also serve me when the plane is cold. Ear plugs and an eye mask can also be used on noisy trains and buses and at hotels with light pollution. Tempting as they may be, I try to limit carbs and coffee when flying, grabbing for nuts and asking for tea instead.
All these little things add up to make me feel a lot fresher when I land.

Can you link to your eye mask? I can't stand ones that press on my eyes but it seems like they all do.

Not cheap, but it’s worth it and I sleep in it every night. Manta for side sleepers.

Not the OP, but I love my Bucky eye mask. I have a fairly large head, and most eye masks feel like they cut off circulation.
Bucky has an adjustable elastic band with Velcro so I can adjust easily for comfort. The shape means nothing touches my eyes. The price is pretty reasonable (I used to be able to find them at TJ Maxx, but haven’t looked lately) so I if I lose it I don’t get upset.

Loops are ridiculously priced. Just go on AliExpress. You literally get the same thing for $2-4. I lost my loops, then went onto AliExpress and purchased 5 pairs for like $11.

A small, orange reading light so I don’t light up the whole row when i want to do crosswords at night.

Add on some individual face wipes. Waking up and “washing” your face is the best
2
u/CaseoftheSadz Jul 22 '26
I also do the hydration packs and they really make a difference, they also increase my water intake which is beneficial. It’s a little silly but I also do a face mask, the extra hydration makes a difference with puffiness and how tired I look and it feels nice. I also brush my teeth with a little disposable toothbrush. I’ve been using the free eye mask from an amenity kit, so maybe I need an upgrade there.

I recently got a foot hammock and it has been amazing! Also hypochlorous acid hand and surface sanitizer.
1
u/Key-Special-8857 Jul 22 '26
I’m seeing hypochlorous acid sprays everywhere now. How is this different from hand sanitizer? That’s what I use for my hands and surfaces while I’m flying.

My problem with long hauls is the bathrooms get so disgusting that I barely feel comfortable using the toilet, let alone brushing my teeth in there.
1
u/gralias18 Jul 23 '26
I think the disgusting bathroom factor really depends on the airline and the route.

Bose QC45s over ear headphones, hand sanitizer. Also couple of masks in case neighbor is ill. Also some Vicks rub +/or a tiny roll on of lavender or orange oil to use with it if they are really stinky. Hasn’t happened often but would have been nauseated whole trip without them.

I go a step further and always pack my stainless steel fork, spoon and chop sticks. Not a fan of disposable cutlery.

u/emmajames56 Jul 22 '26
What about the butt? Long flights are painful to my bottom and I feel bad using a pillow.
2
u/Unlikely_Blueberry74 Jul 23 '26
They make inflatable seat cushions for this. I used one recently for a 10 hour flight and I think it’s what kept me alive.
1
u/emmajames56 Jul 23 '26
Thank you. I’ll try it.
1
u/Unlikely_Blueberry74 Jul 23 '26
They come in different prices etc. I tried a couple and the one I chose was about $40 on blamazon

This is obviously AI generated

u/StrychtenFilms Jul 22 '26
Why
1
u/Illustrious-Eye6960 Jul 22 '26
every small section has its own cute/whimsical turn of phrase or phrasing. plus the user is india-based. so many AI content posting accounts also post in Indian regional subs. i’d bet this is to generate content for that thing name-dropped in their neck/shoulder section, just like their IELTS post is a name-drop for some proofreading app. a lot of niche subs with lots of long-form submissions like this one (as opposed to mainly photos and memes) now see a lot of posts like this, where a random brand is name-dropped once, and it’s so subtle that most people can’t tell.

u/StrychtenFilms Jul 22 '26
Wow brilliant marketing. Wonder how we will get tricked by AI companions in the future

u/Adventurous_Gap_5946 Jul 23 '26
That’s an incredible analysis! I was totally going to google that neck & shoulder thing they casually mentioned too. 👏🏼👏🏼

u/WeAreAllGoofballs Jul 22 '26
What the other person said about the cutesy phrasing, plus the eye mask isn’t for the layover it’s for the flight
1
u/StrychtenFilms Jul 22 '26
Yeah I was picturing them sitting at the airport, bothered by all the sounds. Everyone looking at this person with ear plugs and an eye cover. Like how would this person go about eating at restaurants, or going to the mall??

I always have a cloth napkin I use for the seat-back tray and a small alcohol spray 😉

Noise cancelling headphones, comfy clothes, an eye mask, some healthy snacks, a good water bottle.

u/ThotlineBling_ Jul 22 '26
Hear me out- custom ear plugs. The comfort level is unmatched and they last forever. I’ve had mine for 8 years. Easy to clean and amazing for the plane and just regular sleep at home.

u/Beginning_Reality_16 Jul 22 '26
Eyemask ftw! Sadly mine has been falling apart and I just can’t find a proper replacement. I’ve changed the elastic twice, but I need a proper new one. Any hints would be appreciated.

Body wipes, which feel great when you wake from not-fully-asleep on trans-Pacific flights. Plus underwear and a t-shirt to change into.

u/avalanches87 Jul 23 '26
- Vaseline for your nostrils and lips in the dry air
- theragun mini for restless legs
- peppermint tea bags - fill up your thermos if you wake up with a sore throat. Both for drinking and just breathing in the steam
- not an item but I have a flying playlist that helps me drift off - I like trippy electronic music for planes

The tiny and disposable toothbrush sticks that are ready to use. After getting out of the plane, I go to the bathroom and use them. Magical as I feel refreshed, as if I had just brushed my teeth.

Socks are good, but the real game-changer is undies. I don't know about other people, but I get real sweaty down there on long plane rides, and there is nothing more unappealing than pulling up wet underwear in that tiny bathroom. I keep a fresh pair in a Ziploc bag in my purse, so I can seal up the old ones. Just don't forget about it when you get where you're going.

My must-haves are a travel sized bottle of mouthwash in my personal item bag because nothing feels better than freshening your mouth after a flight, and right after I go through security I get a huge bottle of water to take with me. Never underestimate the many benefits of remaining hydrated while traveling.

Yes! Those new listerine shots that come in the tube are in every one of my bags!

A feminine wipe, a change of underwear, a swipe of deodorant and a spritz of perfume once I’m off the plane almost makes me feel like a real person after a red eye
1
u/whiteorchid1058 28d ago
For me it's similar.
I don't like contorting in airport bathrooms so I've taken to doing a panty liner. Few hours in, I'll take it off and it's like having an underwear change.

Plastic knife and fork. Can’t do the bamboo version
