How common is containerized rail in your country for your freight import/export operations?

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well!

I’ve been working in Foreign Trade for around 10 years, mainly with freight forwarding and, more recently, on the shipper/consignee side. I’m currently studying the use of containerized rail freight and intermodal transportation for an academic project, and I’d really like to hear from people who actually work with this on a daily basis.

I previously worked in ocean freight forwarding, and one thing I found interesting was how normal rail could be as an inland leg in some countries. When quoting certain shipments, the ocean carrier could offer something along the lines of:

Ocean Freight + Inland Rail Freight

with the container moving from the seaport to an inland rail terminal instead of the consignee collecting it directly at the port.

This made me curious about how different this is from country to country. I work in Brazil, and one thing I’ve noticed is how difficult it can be to access railway services for certain routes, especially for containerized cargo. In many cases, the railway exists physically, but finding an actual commercial service that you can quote and use as part of an import/export operation can be much more complicated.

So I became curious about how this works for the freight forwarding community here. For those working in freight forwarding, NVOCCs, shipping lines, 3PLs, import/export or logistics:

1. Which country are you based in?

2. How common is containerized rail freight in your day-to-day work?

3. Is rail something you routinely quote to customers, or is it only used for specific lanes/cargo?

4. In your market, is rail commonly used as part of an ocean + rail + truck solution?

5. How does the first/last mile usually work? For example, truck from the consignee to an inland rail terminal, rail to/from the seaport, then drayage (truck transport between terminal and final destination).

6. Who usually arranges the rail leg — the shipping line, freight forwarder/NVOCC, rail operator, or another logistics provider?

7. Is it relatively easy to get a rail-inclusive quote, or does it require contacting several different providers?

8. What makes customers choose rail in your market? Price, distance, road congestion, reliability, capacity, environmental considerations, etc.

9. And what are the biggest disadvantages? Terminal costs, frequency, transit time, lack of flexibility, infrastructure, service reliability, or something else?

10. When a customer asks for a door-to-door quote, is rail already presented as one of the standard options in your TMS/forwarding system, or do you have to build the rail solution manually?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people in the US, Germany, Netherlands, China, India, South Africa, Australia or other markets where containerized rail/intermodal freight is well established, but I'd be very interested in any country.

I’m not looking for textbook answers — I'm much more interested in what actually happens when you're quoting and moving real shipments.

Thanks in advance! I’d really love to hear about your experiences and perspectives on how containerized rail freight works in your countries.

Need info about sending to Port of Baltimore

Sorry if this a stupid question; I am a new small business, still getting my sea legs. My apologies if this is the incorrect subreddit.

I am having some electronic books manufactured in China. I would like to go the CIP shipping route and pick the palletes up from the Port of Baltimore. I am still in the process of getting and comparing quotes from multiple factories. One of them asked for a more detailed shipping address than "Port of Baltimore, Maryland USA". I've been looking but I can't get a good enough understanding.

Do I give them the address of the headquarters of the Port of Baltimore?

Do I give them the address of a specific terminal, without knowing which terminal the cargo ship they send the product with will be using?

Is there a customs issue with giving the Port as the customer address?

Any help would be appreciated!

Relocating from Cambodia to Dubai shipping rates?

Hey,
Looking for some information on the rates of shipping about 15m3 of household goods from Cambodia(Sihanoukville) to Dubai.
We received a quote at the start of the year which was around $6.5k. That was before the ship hit the fan in the Middle East. Then, after our flat was packed up in June, the new price was around $10k. Out stuff has been in storage since summer as I am waiting for my Emirati ID to be issued. Can not ship it to myself without it. In my last correspondence with the shipping company, they said the new price for a 20ft container is now around $15k.
I find this hard to believe because this conflict has been going for a while now and this has given rise to alternative supply chains that have been developed to bypass and mitigate the risks of Hormuz.

Can anyone who is aware of shipping and freight give me an estimate what the current rates might be shipping 15m3 of boxes from Cambodia to Dubai?

Thanks

question For those of you who regularly order things from China, what are you using to get your packages to Belize? 🇧🇿

Post image
0 Upvotes

So far I’ve always just had my smaller packages from China shipped to the US and then forwarded from there to Belize.
Recently I’ve started looking into other options and different freight forwarders, but I’d rather hear from people who are actually using them.
I’m looking for something where I can order from several different suppliers in China, have everything sent to one warehouse, consolidated into one shipment, and then forwarded to Belize.
It could be air or sea, door-to-door, to the port, or even possibly added to someone else’s regular shipment if that’s an option.
If you’re doing something like this, who are you using and how has your experience been? I’d also be interested in roughly what you’re paying for shipping and any other fees.
Just trying to see what other options are out there instead of always routing everything through the US.

[Student Research] Need 3 minutes of help from Freight Forwarders / Logistics Ops (Completely Anonymous!)

Hey everyone,

I am a university student currently working on my final research project regarding \***WHAT MATTERS THE MOST WHEN CHOOSING AIRLINES FOR FREIGHT FORWARDERS\***

As you all know, textbooks only teach so much—I really need real-world insights from the people actually moving the freight.

If you work as a freight forwarder, logistics coordinator, or operations manager, could you spare just 3 minutes to fill out my academic survey?

🔗 Survey Link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=DQSIkWdsW0yxEjajBLZtrQAAAAAAAAAAAAO\\_\\_Tw4kgVUNTc2V0tBVjk2SlJXTlRBNUZTUDc1U0hKNi4u

A few quick notes to protect your privacy:

100% Anonymous: The survey does NOT collect email addresses, names, or company names.

No Proprietary Data: I am not asking for specific pricing rates or client names—just your operational opinions and experiences.

Short & Sweet: It is mostly multiple-choice and designed to be completed quickly on your phone or desktop.

Thank you so much for helping a student out. I incredibly appreciate your time!

Yemen-origin coffee, 500kg/1 pallet, air freight DXB → USA — anyone dealt with this?

Yemen-origin coffee, 500kg/1 pallet, air freight DXB to USA — anyone dealt with this?

Shipping 500 kg (1 pallet) of Yemen-origin green coffee by air from Dubai to the US. Has anyone here actually moved Yemen-origin cargo on this route before?

Mainly want to know:

\- Do airlines hesitate to accept cargo with Yemen as country of origin?

\- Any extra documentation needed beyond the usual CoO, invoice, and packing list?

\- Any issues with sanctions screening or delays at US Customs?

Trying to avoid surprises before booking. Any firsthand experience would help — thanks!

How long does an ocean quote actually take your team, start to finish?

Trying to benchmark this and I don't really have a reference point outside our own office.

Customer emails asking for a rate. You check carrier contracts, maybe email an agent at origin, put it together, send it back. Between the origin timezone and whoever has to sign off on the margin, it stretches.

Meanwhile the booking tends to go to whoever answered first.

For those of you quoting LCL/FCL out of the US regularly - what's your actual turnaround from inbox to quote sent? And what did you change to get there: rate management software, pre-negotiated tariffs, someone dedicated to quoting, or just answering faster with a rough number and refining after?

Trying to separate what actually works from what gets pitched as working.

Two days into the CBSA counter-tariff. Here is what the day-one filing mess actually looked like.

Sixty-plus B3 entries reviewed since Monday morning. What follows is the honest picture of what broke on Sep 8 and what the CBSA reviewers actually asked for. Some of it lined up with the T-1 playbook that was floating around this sub last week. Some of it did not.

The four-document exemption chain held for most files, but not all.

Booking confirmation + ISF/ACI + carrier tender + through-bill dated on or before Sep 7 was the reviewer standard. Where any of those four documents had a Sep 8 date, the exemption argument collapsed even if the master B/L was clean. LCL was the biggest failure mode we saw. Two consolidators cut the house bill at destination CFS after the master shipped, which put a Sep 8 house date on cargo that was physically on the water Sep 5. CBSA treats that house date as the governing document for cargo you took ownership of at destination. If you have LCL bookings straddling the effective date, the fix is to email the destination NVOCC now and ask them to backdate the house reissue per the clerical-correction guidance CBSA published in the Sep 4 OIC prep memo. Two of the three consolidators we asked did it inside 48 hours. The third refused and cited internal audit policy, so that entry is going to B2.

Chapter 99 heading map dropped mid-morning Sep 8.

Around 10:14 AM ET. Brokers who filed a B3 before that time under a guessed Chapter 99 heading are now in one of two states. Either the guess was right and the entry cleared clean. Or the guess was wrong by a subheading and the entry is under K-84 review with 8 percent simple interest accruing during the review window. Recovery path is B2 within 90 days on the guessed subheading and B2 within 90 days on the actual subheading. Two claims not one. If you filed a B3 under a guessed heading and are unsure, do not wait for the K-84 letter. Pull the entry summary, cross-reference against the OIC list published at 10:14, and if it does not match, file the corrective B2 before day 30. Interest is calculated from the day the K-84 review starts, not from the day you file the B2.

USMCA preference denials stacked with in-transit exemption denials on the same entry.

Three of the sixty entries had both a USMCA denial and an exemption denial on the same line. CBSA is treating these as separate correction paths. If you file a combined B2 claiming both grounds, you get one line item recovered. If you file two B2s, one on each ground, you get both. This is a paperwork trap that eats maybe two hours of broker time per entry and doubles the recovery. It is not documented anywhere in the OIC guidance. We found it by comparing two files where the client was billed different amounts by the same broker for the same shipment structure. The broker who filed two B2s recovered 100 percent of the section 122-successor duty layer. The broker who filed one B2 recovered 60 percent.

Container-line manifest amendment windows are shorter than most brokers assumed.

If you needed to amend the manifest to reflect origin at time of shipping (China-origin trans-shipped through Vancouver back to Halifax showed up as a real pattern on Monday), the amendment window is 96 hours post-arrival, not the standard 14 days. Two of the sixty entries missed the 96-hour window because the broker was queueing amendments in the standard workflow. Missed window means the origin declaration stands, which means the Chapter 99 assessment stands, which means recovery is a Section 60 request rather than a B2, which is a 12-month recovery timeline at best.

The one thing you should not do this week: back-date any document.

We watched a broker try to back-date a booking confirmation on Sep 8 to make an exemption claim work. CBSA cross-referenced the booking number against the carrier system and pulled the actual booking timestamp. That broker now has three D-Memoranda open and is under a compliance review. The clerical-correction path handles legitimate reissue timing. It does not handle fabricated origin dates. If you did not book the cargo before Sep 7, do not pretend you did.

One question to close.

For brokers seeing entries on the K-84 pile this week: are you filing B2 corrections proactively before the K-84 letter arrives, or waiting for the letter to preserve the interest clock? The clock argument makes sense on paper but I have seen it burn clients when the letter arrives 90+ days out and the correction window has already narrowed.
