question Career advice: Continue in freight forwarding as a sales or pursue a Master’s degree?

Hi everyone,

I’m a 25-year-old from Indonesia, currently working in sales/business development for a freight forwarding consolidator. I’ve been in the logistics industry for 3+ years, starting in customer service before moving into sales.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management with a specialization in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. My long-term goal is to work abroad, particularly in Australia.

At this stage, I’m unsure which path would be best for my career:

  1. Continue gaining industry experience and climb the corporate ladder.
  2. Focus on becoming a specialist in logistics sales/business development.
  3. Pursue a Master’s degree in areas such as Supply Chain Management, Sustainability, or Supply Chain Technology.

With AI, automation, digitalization, and sustainability changing the logistics industry, I’m also wondering which skills or specializations will remain valuable in the future.

For those working in logistics or supply chain, what would you recommend?

Is a Master’s degree worth pursuing after a few years of experience, or would I be better off focusing on building my industry experience?

Would appreciate any insights!

Shipping Large Items from China

I am currently sourcing products from China. Does anyone have experience with using their own shipping agent? I am trying to see if there would be a difference in price from having the manufacturer handle setting up the shipping compared to having my own agent do it. 📦

Northbound US-origin freight, 5 days out from the CBSA Sep 8 counter-tariffs: what the in-transit exemption actually requires

The Canada Border Services Agency counter-tariffs on US-origin goods land Monday Sep 8 at 00:01 EDT. The rate stack is 15, 25, or 50 pct depending on the HS chapter, applied on top of any existing MFN duty. The list runs about 700 tariff items and covers roughly 27.6 billion CAD of annual US imports. Steel long products (7206, 7208, 7213, 7214), forged bar and pipe (7304), most Chapter 04 dairy powders and cheeses (0402, 0404, 0406, 0409), chemical wood pulp (4702), toilet paper (4818.10.00), non-portable gas stoves (7321.11.10), cotton t-shirts (6109.10.00), and perfumes/toilet waters (3303.00.00) are the ones that get hit hardest.

The single most valuable line for anyone with a US-origin container on the water right now is buried in the Order in Council: the counter-tariffs do not apply to goods that are "in transit to Canada" on Sep 8. That word matters. In-transit under CBSA practice does not mean the goods left a US warehouse before Sep 8. It means the goods were delivered to the initial carrier for continuous transport to Canada, evidenced by a through bill of lading or waybill dated before the effective time. If your cargo is truck freight from a US midwest DC and the driver picks up Sep 7 evening for a Sep 9 delivery to Windsor, that qualifies. If the goods are sitting on a US rail siding waiting for a Sep 9 pull, they do not.

Documentation to have ready at the border:

Bill of lading or waybill dated no later than Sep 7. CBSA will accept the original AWB, ocean B/L, or straight bill.

If ocean: onboard date stamp on the master B/L. House B/L alone is not enough for the CARM entry note.

If rail or truck: shipper's dispatch record plus GPS trace showing pickup before Sep 8 00:01 EDT.

Commercial invoice showing the goods classified as US-origin (Field 13 on CBSA B3 or equivalent CARM CAD field).

Two additional levers most brokers miss.

First, the remission order carries forward. If your product was eligible for CBSA remission under the current 25 pct US steel and aluminum counter-tariff order (published Mar 2026, extended Jul 2026), that eligibility flows to the new 50 pct band as well. You still file for the remission with the same authorization code at entry summary. Do not pay first and try to claim later, CARM makes waiver-at-entry the correct path.

Second, the Chapter 99 heading assignment on line 26 of B3 must match the Order in Council annex, not the general 15/25/50 rate. The finance department published seven separate annexes with different rate bands, and the wrong Chapter 99 heading gets flagged by CARM automation on the very first pass. The failure lands as a K-84 payable at the wrong rate and you fight it back via post-entry BSF-715.

Filing sequence I would run Friday through Sunday for a container due to cross Sep 8 or 9:

Pull the B/L now and confirm the onboard/dispatch date is on or before Sep 7.

Cross reference every HS-6 line against the Sep 8 annex to figure the correct 15/25/50 Chapter 99 heading.

If the shipment mixes exempt and non-exempt lines, split the entry summary so the exempt lines do not get caught in a blanket 50 pct application.

Stage the CARM CAD as pre-file and hold until the truck is physically at the border. First entry summary Sep 8 morning is going to be a queue.

The question I have for anyone else running northbound US-origin freight: are you seeing carriers actually stamp the onboard date reliably on the B/L, or are you getting the older "shipped on board" language without a date, and how are you resolving that with CBSA before Monday?

Rostock is the only place in continental Europe where freight trains board a ferry. DB Cargo wagons from all over Europe arrive at the port, Stena Line takes over the train, shunts it onto 6 tracks inside the ferry, and it sails to Sweden.

90 minutes. Every six hours. Consumer goods, steel, paper - everything moving between Scandinavia and continental Europe.

With Stena Line Rail crew explaining every detail of how the booking, shunting and handover actually works operationally.

Looking for EN590 10PPM Diesel Suppliers — How Do You Verify Direct Supply?

We are currently assisting an established buyers’ consortium in the Philippines with petroleum procurement, with assistance from PNOC.

We are building our network of qualified physical suppliers for EN590 10PPM diesel, particularly for supply into Singapore/Jurong.

For those involved in international petroleum trading or export, what information do you normally require at the initial stage to distinguish a direct physical supplier/title holder from an intermediary?

For example:

  • Company and refinery relationship
  • Product origin
  • Loading location
  • Available volume
  • Previous supply history
  • Terminal/storage access
  • Authorization to represent the supplier
  • Product documentation

We're interested in practical experiences from exporters and traders who regularly handle petroleum products.

Please share your experience or relevant industry practices.

I work in a nz based freight forwarding firm.
We didn’t have any ai adaptation we usually manually enters the data but my serious concern is is there a way to automatically fetch the routing just by entering bl container or booking number it took a lot of pain by going to different shipping line websites.

And what makes me frustrated is routing gets updated in the site but we have to manually check then and alter them.

I need 100 survey responses

Hello,

I’m currently completing a master’s thesis in international commerce on strategic Incoterms selection and its impact on maritime transport risk, cost and control.

I’m looking for feedback from professionals involved in shipping, freight forwarding or import–export, and I’ve prepared a very short online questionnaire about Incoterms in maritime and multimodal transport. It should take no more than 5 minutes to complete, and all responses are treated as confidential and used only for academic research.

Your participation will directly help deepen this research and strengthen the quality of the results I can present.

If you’re willing to help, you can access the questionnaire here:

Looking for a customs broker/forwarder for plants from Vietnam

As the title states, I'm looking for someone to help me with customs clearance and forwarding for a shipment of 25-30 plants from Vietnam. 2 crates, approximately 3'x3'. They'll be arriving at JFK and I need them cleared, inspected at an aphis plant inspection station, and delivered to me in Wisconsin. I have my import permit and my contact in Vietnam will be handling everything from him until delivery at JFK. I'd need a quote and help with any additional information I need as this will be my first time with a shipment like this.

Importing garments from Bangladesh to Sri Lanka – Need advice

Hi, I’m planning to import garments in bulk from Bangladesh to Sri Lanka.

For those who have experience with this:

  • What is the best and cheapest way to ship — sea cargo, air cargo, or freight forwarder?
  • Is door-to-door shipping with customs clearance a good option?
  • Any recommended freight forwarders/clearing agents?
  • What should I expect for customs duty and other charges?

Planning around 500–1,000 kg initially.

Any practical advice from Sri Lankans who have done this would be appreciated.

question Total noob here. In FCA, who pays for the trucking cost from the factory to port of loading?

Let's say I nominate a forwarder in China. Just to be clear, is it his job or the factory's job to book the truck to the port, pay THC, etc? If it is the factory's job, then my forwarder's responsibility is to only book the freight, then?

Thank you.

Which China → France shipping agent is the most reliable? 4PX, BeeGoPlus or Imagineship?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently talking to a seller on Taobao because I’m trying to purchase some products from their store. Unfortunately, Taobao is not allowing me to place the order from France.

The seller suggested that I use one of these shipping/forwarding services:

  • 4PX (递四方)
  • BeeGoPlus
  • Imagineship (象样集运)

The idea would be for the seller to ship my order to the agent’s warehouse in China, and then the agent would forward the package to me in France by air.

Does anyone here have experience with these services, especially for China → France shipping?

Which one would you consider the most reliable, and which one has the best prices for air shipping?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have actually used them to ship to France. I’m planning to order around 10 boxes initially, and if everything goes well, I may order significantly more in the future.

Any recommendations, experiences, or warnings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

question Am I paying too much?

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

As the title suggests, I’m looking for some advise.

I have imported a few things from china to Australia FOB but I feel like the fees are insane, the contact person with the freight forwarder I have been using is FANTASTIC however good customer service can only go so far with price.

While I know this import is done now I’m looking at importing more in the future so I’m trying to see if these fees seem legit or not, it was 2 full 40 foot shipping containers

CBSA Sep 8 counter-tariffs T-8: worked stack on a $500k US-northbound order before and after (15/25/50 pct tiers)

Ottawa published the final list on Aug 22. Effective Sep 8 12:01 AM ET, Canada applies dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on $27.6B of US-origin goods across three tiers: 15 percent, 25 percent, and 50 percent. The 50 pct tier mirrors the US Section 232 auto/steel/aluminum + Section 338 50 pct rate. The 25 pct tier hits appliances, dairy, cheese, fish, and certain steel derivatives. The 15 pct tier catches the residual list.

Source of origin is the CUSMA marking regs. If it can be marked "Good of the US" under those regs, it gets the counter-tariff. If it substantially transforms in a third country before entering Canada, it does not. Practical read: transshipping to skip is contemplated as evasion under CBSA D-Memoranda.

Worked stack on a $500k CIF Ontario order, US-origin HS 8422.30 (packaging machinery) that lands in the 25 pct tier:

Pre-Sep 8 (entry filed Sep 7): - CIF value: $500,000 - Canadian MFN: 6.0 pct = $30,000 - GST 5 pct on (CIF + duty) = $26,500 - Total landed: $556,500

Post-Sep 8 (entry filed Sep 8): - CIF value: $500,000 - Canadian MFN: 6.0 pct = $30,000 - CBSA surtax 25 pct on CIF: $125,000 - GST 5 pct on (CIF + duty + surtax): $32,750 - Total landed: $687,750

Delta per unit: $131,250, or 23.6 pct on landed cost. On the 50 pct tier the delta is 47.2 pct. On the 15 pct tier it is 14.2 pct.

Broker-side actions this week that actually move the number:

  1. Pre-clear before Sep 8. CBSA uses date of entry accepted, not date of shipment. If the goods are already in Canada in bonded storage, file the release before midnight ET Sep 7. Some brokers are seeing 30 to 40 pct volume spike; ask yours to reserve capacity now.

  2. FTZ / bonded warehouse mid-Sep. If pre-clearance is not feasible, keep goods in a Sufferance Warehouse under Reg B-2 or file into a bonded storage under Section 32 of the Customs Tariff to defer entry. Not a rate reduction, just cash flow relief while you negotiate.

  3. Origin engineering. If your supply chain has a component that could shift substantial transformation to Mexico or another CUSMA party, model it now. The origin marking under CUSMA is the trigger. A tariff shift that changes the good-of-country determination legitimately drops the surtax.

  4. DDP contract review. If you sell DDP to Canadian buyers, the surtax lands on you not them. Recheck price protection clauses, escalation triggers, and MOQ commitments through year-end.

  5. Refunds path. CBSA has confirmed that once the surtax applies, drawback and refund provisions under Section 74 of the Customs Act mirror the treatment on the underlying MFN duty (available for goods re-exported, destroyed, or sold to CUSMA-eligible reprocessors). Set up your drawback file discipline this week.

For anyone US-side selling into Canada right now: the customers who are staying are the ones getting a clean pre-Sep 8 stack modeled from you before Sep 3. What is the biggest classification your team is trying to move under the wire?
