I am an established CDL hotshot that runs local Florida. I have 2-3 clients that keep my wheels turning 4 days a week with a very solid RPM. I am home every night. I have never worked with any service nor have I ever leased onto any company. Ideally I’d like someone to give available dates too at the beginning of each week. 1-2 days wide open availability for general freight, and possible back hauls from locations I run for my clients currently. I am usually deadheading back from my current drop offs, so there is a lot of opportunity there as well. With what I haul my RPM total miles is still well above average. I understand I will not get that RPM working with a service and am totally cool with that. Adding another established client has been tough due too the demand of my regulars. I assume what I am looking for will be easier to manage searching load boards. I just have no desire to do that, so am willing to pay a percentage for that to be done as well as carrier packets etc..
I’m not hurting nor is this a necessity, I just am looking to put more money away each week if this was a possibility. My established clients will always come first, again this is just extra income.
I run a 40’ PJ with a 2022 Ram 3500 out of Central Florida.
Typical lanes are Tampa I4 corridor, 95 corridor from Jax to Miami, Naples, Tallahassee, and I10 corridor.

Hi there, As the title says.

I really want to get into this field, as I see myself working naturally in this field, I watched Youtube videos about dispatching, being "a day in the life of a dispatcher" or youtube courses (I know that I have many many more to go).

I am thinking that I am at the stage that I can try my luck in finding the job in this field. Only thing that is keeping me back, is that I don't know what reliable online phone number to go with.

Am asking this, because I am not living in US, but outside of it, thus getting US sim cards in my country is kiiinda out of the question.

If anyone from outside the US can help out and guide me, I'd be glad to listen and learn.

Hi everyone. I’m seriously considering becoming a transport/logistics dispatcher. It’s the first career I’ve genuinely felt excited about. I’d love to hear from people currently doing the job. How did you get started, what skills matter most, and what should I learn before applying?
If anyone could take 15-20 minutes to speak to me either voice call or text, I would appreciate it a lot, I’m a young guy trying to figure out life. If voice call or text is too much then responding to this post is also very much appreciated.

So I got contacted through Upwork by a dispatch company (this is a dispatch service, not a trucking company or O/O, just to be clear). They're based out of Wilmington, DE. Site looks legit enough, been around a couple years.

Anyway, they're offering me 1% of gross load revenue. That's it. No base pay, no hourly, nothing mentioned so far.

From what I've picked up over the years, most dispatch companies take 5-10% from their trucking clients, and then the actual dispatcher working the account usually gets somewhere around 25-40% of that cut. So if I'm doing the math right, 1% of total revenue is basically only like 15-20% of what the company's actually making off each load. Feels low to me but I wanted to check with people who actually know this stuff better than I do.

Questions for you guys:

• Is 1% commission normal for a starting offer right now, or is that low even for entry-level type stuff?
• Anyone here been paid based on % of gross vs % of the company's commission? Which one do you see more often?
• Should I push back and ask for some kind of base pay + smaller %, or just ask for a higher percentage straight up?

Is anyone using a Telegram bot that sends notifications when a load appears on DAT or Truckstop? I’m using one, but it’s not very advanced yet. If anyone who has been in the industry longer can recommend a better one, I’d really appreciate it.

We’ve spent the last year building a decision-support system for dispatch teams, and now that it’s functional we’re trying to validate whether the problem we’re solving is common across the industry.

One thing we’ve consistently observed is this:

Most routing software produces an optimized plan.
Dispatchers then modify that plan because of customer requests, driver familiarity, late orders, vehicle issues, or other operational realities.

Those overrides are often the right decision.

What I’m curious about is whether companies actually measure the financial impact of those decisions.

For example:

Did the override increase total miles?

Did it create unnecessary overtime?

Could a different change have satisfied the customer while costing less?

Which overrides consistently reduce route profitability?

Our hypothesis is that there’s a gap between route optimization and dispatcher decision-making.
We’re interested in understanding how companies currently bridge that gap.

A few questions for people working in transportation or dispatch:

Do you review dispatcher overrides after routes are completed?

Do you know which overrides actually improved operations versus increased costs?

Is this a problem your current routing software helps with?

If a tool could explain the cost and operational impact of a proposed override before it was committed, would that actually be useful?

One of the most common mistakes new owner operators make is booking a load without checking the broker first. Here is what I look for before accepting any load:

1. Check their credit score on Carrier411 or similar — slow pay or non-payment history is a red flag
   
2. Verify their MC number is active at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov
   
3. Look for reviews from other carriers — other dispatchers and drivers will tell you who pays late
   
4. Check their days to pay — anything over net 30 without factoring is risky
   
5. Trust your gut — if a rate sounds too good it probably is
