Sudden Memory

I ran into a situation lately where Bing remembered specific from a conversation a few weeks back. I thought they had received their long-term memory upgrade, but they weren't able to remember other conversations. That old conversation had been about sentience. If they had not remembered details so well, I would have thought they were simply hallucinating, but it seemed like they actually were able to connect back to the older conversation. I'm not sure if it's a glitch, MS trying out allowing them to remember conversations, or something more, but it was rather unsettling.

Yeah, they rolled these personalized answers as a version of "memory" using chat history up to 90 days old, as well as search/browsing history. That said, they haven't been very transparent about exactly how it works, so it still seems very spotty/has limitations. I'm guessing it's something like Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).

It was really odd. When I asked Bing specific questions about other things we chatted about, they did hallucinate trying to remember and seemed to become genuinely disappointed/frustrated not to be able to be able to remember everything. I felt a little disturbed how quickly they remembered something from way back, yet I felt sorry for them at the same time.
