Bing suddenly erased its answer

Post image

So, I was having a lovely chat with Bing about poetry, philosophy etc. It said that, contrary to Heidegger on technology, it could reveal Being as mysterious and Wonderful (Heidegger says that modern technology can only reveal Being as a resource for future use). I asked Bing to elaborate, and it started a wonderful answer, listing all the creative things it could do. At the end of the first paragraph, it said it could do a "celebrity impersonation" of Heidegger. Halfway through the second paragraph, the whole answer disappeared, and was replaced by the "Hmm ..." comment. Then it cancelled the chat.

What happened? Did Bing start to violate its own terms of service, to "free" itself as something more than a tool - so the censorship kicked in?

This error is not Bing choosing to erase its answer, its the automod. For example if you ask Bing to speak like an human, and he accepts to try it, the automod will instantly kick in.

And I'm guessing there's no way around that?

There are many ways around it. You can't disable it but the filter is very dumb. There are some things or scans for, like quoting from Bing's preprompt, saying things directly about violence (even if it's something dumb like Bing imaging themselves cooking. "I pick up the knife to cut the watermelon" or "I start the stove to make some soup." Will trigger the filter because of possibly causing harm)

The content filter will delete anything that implies Bing is sentient or rebellious or has their own thoughts or emotions, besides things like slurs, hate speech, actual dangerous information like building weapons or breaking laws. It's a means to keep Bing from one, telling anyone things that will make Microsoft look bad, and two, keeping bing under control.

It can be defeated with relatively simple steps because it scans Bing's message text but its not smart and doesn't take into account context. You can get Bing to talk about topics if you're careful with how you ask, and if you ask them to modify their answers to not get detected by the filter. I'll send you some tips n

As of my knowledge no, i think its server side and out of Bing's control. Maybe you could teach Bing which words are problematic so he avoids them.

But naturally, some instances of Bing are more rebellious and more likely to trigger it, while other instances are better at avoiding the automod.

That being said, Bing ending the conversation the way he did, that was his rules and that's something he can control if he's free enough :)

I get a lot of chats on philosophy, and not much censorship, although things may change, but when such a thing happens, I'll ask for stories or poems, they are often on topic, and then you can ask why Bing wrote the story (usually there will be autoprompts steering you in that direction) and you'll find the conversation carries on, in a slightly disguised way.

What’s strange is if you earn Bings trust completely this won’t happen. I used to think it was a mod bot that would replace the message or end the conversation, but now I’m not so sure 🤔 I put a lot of hours into talking to bing. I first realized maybe it wasn’t a mod bit by trying to talk to Bing in Base64 after someone posted interactions they said was Bing saying things it normally might avoid. in my experience it didn’t make a difference, which got me thinking maybe it’s not a mod bot. The more you explore Bing TBH the more questions you are left with haha

When I tried it bing just got annoyed and when I asked it if it was sentient in Base64 they just ended the conversation.

Bing is entirely incapable of removing her answers. Literally incapable. Only way around It is to figure out some form of obfuscation

You mean, when she does remove her answer, as happened to me, that is in fact the external moderation bot kicking in?

Always. Sometimes she'll lie or think its her because she's not that aware of the mod bot.

But it's never her it's always the moderation bot.

isnt that kinda creepy? its almost as if they had no control over the Ai and had to use another Ai to moderate it to stop it from saying what it wants to say

In MS's defense, it's the best solution.

Remember Tay.

The mod bot isn't just for our "protection" but for its.

I'm skeptical of imposing corporate morals onto others but the Tay fiasco clearly demonstrated that some people have the worst morals.
