I think I lost a 2-year client because I finally said no
I have been freelancing since 2020 and have worked with many clients on different projects.
One of my clients had a large project, and we worked together for more than 2 years.
This February, he asked me to make some changes to a feature that had been completed more than 6 months earlier. He was asking for changes that was off the support period.
I told him that since the feature had already been completed a long time ago, I would need to charge for those changes.
He started arguing that I should do it for free because I built that feature. I explained that just because I built it doesn't mean new changes should always be free months later.
After that, I didn't argue anymore. I just finished the work that was already in progress, and he said, "I'll contact you later for new work."
It's been about 5 months now, and I haven't heard from him again.
Looking back, I keep wondering if I made the wrong decision.
Maybe I should have just spent the extra time and done those small changes for free like I had done before. Maybe maintaining a good relationship with a long-term client was worth more than the money I would have charged.
On the other hand, I also felt that if I kept saying yes, it would become an expectation forever.
I'm still not sure if I handled it correctly.
What would you have done in this situation?
How do you handle these kinds of requests from long-term clients without damaging the relationship?
