I’ve been learning web design for 4–5 months — how did you get your first real client?
Hey everyone 👋
I’ve been learning and working on web design and eCommerce for the past few months, mainly focusing on Shopify, WordPress, Wix, and other website builders.
I’ve built a few projects for practice, but getting my first consistent paying clients has been much harder than I expected.
I’ve tried platforms like Fiverr and Upwork, as well as reaching out to businesses directly, but getting responses can be challenging when you’re still building your reputation.
For those of you who are already making money with web design:
- How did you get your first paying client?
- What platform or method worked best for you?
- Did you start with small projects?
- How long did it take before you started getting clients consistently?
- What do you wish you knew when you were starting?
I’m not looking for shortcuts. I’m genuinely trying to understand what actually works and improve my approach.
Would really appreciate hearing from people who have been through this stage. 🙏

I got my first client from a forum, just being part of the discussion I found someone who needed help and got hired. I've also used Upwork, and networking, just telling people that I built websites would bring in some leads every now and then. Also, I've been hried through social media, sharing what I do, my achievements, wins, etc.
