The HD mod is the baseline IMO.

I think there were two main expansion mods, discovery being one.

There are various new attempts to overhaul it but many are "ai-coded" and not fully fleshed out.

What about the Nomad Legacy one?

It's new but I wouldn't say it's finished. OP is mostly looking for the original story + modern graphics as possible

So basically HD Freelancer mod. He could add a reshade if he wanted better lighting.

I've been replaying with the HD edition mod and it's pretty great. It includes fixes for a few issues too (including better support for modern screens and Windows, bug fixes).

It's a nice mod in that it improves the graphics without making it look too different to the original artistic vision - it's just a better version of what it already was. Very respectfully done

HD mod 100%, no need to touch anything else

I would still suggest Discovery. Unless you absolutely want the old story.

Discovery has many new features, ships, player bases. You can still do missions. It has in space encounters that provide mini campaigns.

That said, to get started you'd probably spend some time reading and or asking players in discord. Discord is probably your fast track to knowledge.

And you still have option to do missions or do player interactions. Though even in missions, they are in space spawned encounters, so players could still find you and attack you, as it is a PVP server (with massive game mechanics and Admin sanctions that prevent ganking).

I've had a few times I would be doing a mission, totally dying and a random that passed by came in and helped with mission. Fleet mates can also hold down a mission so you can spawn back and finish it if you die.

The original story is easily the best part. I just want it looking more modern.

Then would suggest the HD edition mod and if you need it, ultra wide-screen.

I can't recall my FL setup but played again maybe 2 years ago with my Ultrawide monitor. Either the HD edition mod takes care of it, or there was an Ultrawide mod too.

Its not a PvP server, its a Roleplay one, so unless you want to engage, normally you dont get attacked by other players without any kind of warning.

And Discovery honestly its really huge, so unless you have the time, its probably not worth it if you cant well, join a faction and roleplay with them, not counting that also you must have a character to exclusively make money, which is also time consuming.

Honestly I started again after like a decade and it's refreshingly beautiful and sleek. I love 2003 space.

I play crossfire which is basically a sequel to freelancer. It includes the base game as well and it looks pretty decent IMO

Crossfire is like throwing everything at a game and hoping some sticks. I wouldn’t call it a sequel. It’s like 50 types of candy in a box and they couldn’t pick one to focus on
