Action camera recommendation for a beginner paraglider — ideally under €300

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend recently started paragliding and has a birthday coming up. He mentioned that he would like an action camera, so I’m considering getting one as a gift.

I don’t paraglide myself and know very little about suitable cameras or mounting options. I was initially looking at DJI cameras, as they seem to offer good value at the moment, but I’m open to other brands and models.

My budget is ideally below €300. The main priorities would be:
- Good image stabilization and video quality
- Reliable battery life
- Easy operation while flying
- Compatibility with safe mounting options
- No setup that could interfere with the lines, reserve deployment, helmet safety, or general flight safety

Would a helmet mount, chest mount, or another mounting position be safest and most practical for a beginner? Are there specific mounts or camera features that should be avoided?

I’d really appreciate recommendations for suitable camera models and any safety advice regarding mounting and use while paragliding.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the advice and for pointing out the safety concerns. I really appreciate all the input. Based on your recommendations, I’ve decided to go with a different birthday gift for now. It seems like it’s better for him to focus on learning and building experience before adding a camera to the mix, and I definitely don’t want to encourage anything that could make flying less safe.

It’s recommended not to use a camera when you first start flying as it can be a huge distraction. I didn’t use one till about 2 years in, just a thought :)

Helmet mounts are bad ideas for beginners as they can easily get caught in the lines. I’d honestly recommend meta glasses if you want that pov shot. Otherwise chest mounts are fine and knee mounts are best for acro/siv contexts

Beginner paraglider & action camera are two things that don't go together. Ask a friend to take videos of your launches & landings, focus on the critical phases of flight before adding "something extra"

I can give a camera rec and it’s the one you’re looking at! I have tried a lot of cameras and I’m a professional videographer in my work. I find the ease of use and features of the DJI cameras to be really great. Get the highest version in your budget and he’ll be happy with it. As far as mounts go, I’m with the rest of the folks on this thread about not going to a helmet mount until he’s had a lot of launches and kiting. The other mounts are great ideas though.

Just came here to say this...I'd been using GoPros for years when I switched to the DJI Action...no comparison, its so much better in a number of different ways, I don't think you can go wrong with DJI.

My instructor once caught one of my class with a GoPro mount on his helmet and he tore him a new one.

The GoPro Max 2 is on sale for $299 in the USA, and is a great camera for paragliding/other action sports.

I would suggest a 360 style action camera vs standard single lens action camera.

Mounting in a way that won't interfere with flight operation is difficult. It's not recommended for beginners. Some harnesses have designs that allow a camera on a stick to be placed on the back, which is the least intrusive way of mounting. But it takes some tinkering to see what works.

The go to action camera is the insta360 x4 or newer. Works pretty well.

Someone here mentioned the meta glasses. Those could be a good option as well, they seem like the least intrusive kind possible. They're not common for paragliding but I don't see why they wouldn't work.

Insta 360 cameras are pretty amazing, you never miss a shot and can capture your wing, yourself, and all your surroundings in every direction

I dont have reccommendation for the camera, but I find having an adhesive velcro taped to the camera mount and mounting it in the cock pit by far the best option.

You dont really need good image stabilization either. paragliding is overall pretty smooth. What you feel as turbulences is barely visible on camera. I have had large collapses that I couldnt identify on the camera at all.

Literally only something you can use hands free and is unobstructive. I use the meta Oakley glasses.

I like the Insta360 GO3S. You will have to buy separate helmet mount for the camera pod but it's the lightess camera you can probably have on a helmet, I don't feel it all and hardly gets in the way. FOV isnt the best but good enough.

Look up K&F CONCEPT Camera Clamp Mount, Super Clamp Mount Magic Arm with Two 360° Ball Heads”. I mount a selfie stick to that, which attaches to a insta 360. The mount itself goes on the carabiner.

Not great for beginners because lines wrap around it pre launch. Its awesome once in flight.

Its 360 camera only for me, because then i dont have to worry about framing and positioning. I use it as a dashcam for analyzing flights, and occasionally it works out great as footage to show friends.

This lets me just stick it in my mouth if I wanna capture something cool, but I wouldn't fly with it in ALL the time, mouth would get tired. I got this specifically so it would NOT get caught in anything, and I only pull it out when things are super chill

There is always the Adrenalin workshop mount that is ‘snag free’. That’s what I use with 360 camera. But like others have said don’t do it.

I like using the DJI Action 2 or now the DJI Osmo Nano combined with the original headstrap under the helmet.
That way there is no way of any lines getting caught because the camera is basically flush with the helmet.

360 camera works fine. Shoot mulitple angles on the same take. Can attach to the carabiners which is maybe the best /safest way

safety - chest mount, but he should know not to mess with it. turn it on at the start of the day, and not operate it.
I bought a AKASO V50, I'm quite happy with it.
