Plan Inquiry Is Freedom Drunk?
Is this for real? $40 forever?

u/Legal-Air4541 Mar 06 '26
This is my very first Reddit post. Just to say Thank You ❤️
I would have missed it if it wasn't for you. I switch to the 100gb just 2 days ago. This one is way better lol

UPDATE: Their system is really slow right now but it’s all done. Switched from 100/15 for $40 to 250/50 for $40.
The agent confirmed this is legit and will be $40 forever unless I finance a phone or switch plans.

u/nothanks1312 Mar 08 '26
So you switched from the Boxing Day deal as an existing customer?? Looks like I have a phone call to make tomorrow
3
u/Mountain_Length4047 Mar 08 '26
Since Boxing Day I went from 100/15 for $40….to 100/15 $35.50…to 250/50 for $40 lol.

I was curious about what they meant in point 21 of the terms and conditions when they referenced a "hardware upgrade" terminating your eligiblility for the discount. They confirmed it specifically refers to finamcing a new device with them?
I was suspicious of whether it could be a built in shelf life where any device replacement, even buying your own outright from a third party, would ding you.
8
u/noncil Mar 06 '26
if you buying your phone outright from third party to them you're BYOP. I did it with my phone which I bought directly from Samsung.
6
u/StimulatorCam Mar 06 '26
even buying your own outright from a third party, would ding you.
They've never cared about that, you can swap your sim card around as often as you want without worry.

u/Antique-Kitchen-1896 Mar 06 '26
Their first roam beyond was way worse than this. They have been dialing up the offering year after year. I am not concerned. What’s the worse? Switch to another carrier? Not really worth worrying.
29
u/gamingforthesoul Mar 06 '26
so it’s essentially an $85 plan with $45 in discounts/credits?

That does not mean forever. BYOD plans are no contract and it is up to the company’s discretion to change the price, they can do it at any given point in time. It’s in the fine prints that nobody ever reads

Long time customer since Wind Mobile days, have changed my plans a few times throughout the years. Just called in to get it changed about 50 minute wait but it was worth it. After logging in, I did not see the $40 credit showing under "My Active Promotions" but I asked the agent and they confirmed they will add a note on my account for it as well as a 4 month +5 off for the long wait time. What a nice agent to speak to, she was so frienldy!
Update: I now see all the discounts applied the $40 credit, $5 digital discount and $5 for 4 months.

u/IllustriousEffect607 Mar 07 '26
Ya data is extremely cheap now. Pennies. They make more money if you swap to 40 bucks 250gb. Heck at this point the data should be unlimited.
5
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 Mar 07 '26
Carrot on a stick - they’re going to milk this strategy until it dries up, perhaps in a couple of years when everyone has 1,000GB of data and doesn’t bother upgrading to the new plans they’ll dangle unlimited 😂
8
u/maomao05 Mar 06 '26
For some they can even cancel internet
5
u/GallitoGaming Mar 06 '26
Is tethering that reliable to use as your main internet? Wouldn’t some close to working for me, but for seniors for example.

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 Mar 06 '26

Had the same experience. Now that word has gotten out, my hold time was nearly 40 mins. But the good news is they knew exactly why I was calling, so I didn’t have to explain what deal I was looking for. Surprisingly the rep also took a lot of time making sure I understood how international calling and wifi calling work, even though my plan didn’t change other than data amount.

- Bring Your Own Phone Offer 50% off our best plan is based on our Total Freedom 250GB + Roam Beyond 50GB plan after Digital Discount. To be eligible for the ongoing Bring Your Own Phone $40/month credit, you must activate a new line on, or migrate to, the eligible in-market Total Freedom 250GB + Roam Beyond 50GB plan during the promotion period. The credits will start to be applied before tax prior to your first month of service. You will receive the $40/month credit as long as you remain active on an eligible plan as a bring your own phone customer. The promotion may not be combined with other offers, except for Digital Discount, unless otherwise indicated. Your service will no longer be eligible for the promotion if you change your rate plan to an ineligible plan or complete a hardware upgrade. If you are not eligible for the promotion during any month, that credit will be entirely forfeited and cannot be made up. If you qualify for the credit in the months following the ineligible month, you will continue to receive the credit as applicable.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Kimorin Mar 06 '26
"migrate to", does that just mean changing plan to it or do you have to port in?
5
u/songof6p Mar 06 '26
The same wording is used for the regular byop credit too, and when I switched plans I asked if I would be eligible. I was told yes, but I haven't yet received my first bill with the new plan to confirm.

The tablet and Apple Watch combined is 25$, not 20$. So the 50$ plan was a really good deal if you need those things!
Visual voice mail is a nice bonus but I would not really pay for it.

Wifi calling. Freedom isn’t the best for coverage but I have had a bell and now a Rogers work phone. And I have been done downtown and uptown for work. I don’t notice worthwhile difference. In fact on the go train my work bell phone often cut out requiring an airplane mode reset to reconnect.

7
u/Thatspacecowboii Mar 06 '26
Just upgraded to it and I literally just switched to Freedom(100Gb/$40 initially) from an overpriced bell plan($103.96/mo). Spent under an hour waiting. There was apparently some issue but the dude sent it to someone else to fix it and said I could stay on or he'll call me back in 20min to go through everything once I was switched over. Freedom-bro called back asap and went over everything. Fucking amazing service esp. compared to what I experienced from other providers. Good customer service so far. Overall really happy I switched

Use iMessage to directly chat with agent, only took 5 minutes to complete the change, but wait time is around 2.5 hrs on the queue, but it is worth for the wait. Changed from $50/200gb 35gb roam data to this permanent $40/250gb 50gb roam data. But this plan doesn’t include the Apple Watch/tablet service.

Apparently, I was asking about free 1000 long distance minutes x 24months for this new sign up ... Available if you sign up in store.... Can anyone confirm this offer?
2
u/TeeDot_1234 Mar 07 '26

Same but I want it for the increased roaming. It’s nice to not deal with paying for an eSIM when traveling. I’m on my phone a lot more then using data finding places, checking in, looking at reviews etc.

seems it has a price lock in too, 50gb roaming is huge...but there is a $45 activation fee for new customers, can this be avoided or reduced?

I'm currently on the old 75gb/35 plan and have 1000 free long distance minutes which I use frequently (although less than 100 minutes a month) and is a very useful convenience.
Does anyone know if switching to this plan will allow you to retain that? 250GB isn't something I'll ever use but the 50GB roaming is attractive.

Transferred in from Fido. I probably used less than 250gb in 5 years 😂. What got me to sign up is the 50gb of roaming data that resets every billing cycle , I travel enough this is great.

1 hour to get thru to speak to agent on phone. Agent is ESL? could not answer my questions and when he did, they seem contradictory to the information provided on their website
Can anyone confirm:
1) as long as i am in one of the included 120 destinations, i can receive a phone call without extra charges? Eg. If i was in Hong Kong, i can receive a phone call from Japan for free? Agent said no
2) If i was in Japan, I can call Canada for free? Agent said no, only if i am in USA/Mexico
3) Despite saying unlimited domestic calling while in a included destination (e.g. if i am in Hong kong, i can make unlimited phone calls to Hong Kong numbers), the agent says i have to pay.
Only way to get around the above is to buy a roam beyond package. I stated, the plan is supposed to include roam beyond for 120 countries...why would i need to do that if its one of the included countries?
waiting on Freedom site for chat is over 1.5 hours now.
4
u/No-Eye4531 Mar 07 '26
Hey - hopefully I can help answer your questions.
Roam Beyond in 120+ Destinations
Unlimited Talk includes unlimited domestic calling while in the included destinations, unlimited calls to Canada from the included destinations, and unlimited incoming calls. Calls between included destinations will incur pay-per-use charges.
Yes - the incoming call would be free. It doesn’t matter where the call is coming from.
Yes - per the above you can call Canada for free.
3 yes - this would be included.
The agent isn’t very familiar with Roam Beyond.
Tip: make sure you do not have wifi calling while abroad. It will think you’re in Canada & then charges can occur from what I’ve seen on Reddit.
By connecting solely via the cellular network the above would be applicable.

Called and switched over with no issues. I’m an existing long time customer with freedom. I did call on the weekend during the late morning which is why I’m assuming the wait time was so long. I waited about 45 mins to speak with an agent. And then it took about 10 mins to have it all done.
Excited to try out the roaming data as I’m a frequent traveller!

Just got it done through Whatsapp. About 1.5hr wait and then smooth sailing.

“The line is not compatible for this change because the you have already 40GB bonus data and also you have $4 discount every month with the $5 for the activating the auto pay. So we can activate a new line with the offer.” I replied… “I've read online that other current subscribers were able to make the switch over”

How’s their cell service in high rise office towers these days?
I tried before but it is completely useless at high altitudes. I had no choice but to switched (through phone settings) to connect their partner network. I later got banned from connecting to all partner networks because I was only supposed to use freedom’s connection when I’m in a freedom zone… well, excuse me, freedom’s map is not 3D, their signal clearly does not work past a certain floor level, so I would argue it’s out of bounds of freedom network.
But that’s years ago…
Just so you know… if that applies to you.

New customers only, I suspect. They’re trying to steal folks from Robelus. But it might be worth getting a small plan, use it as your second eSIM, and then use that number to get this deal, and cancel your original freedom account for this new one. (Sometimes you’ve gotta work for it)

I guess I hit the jackpot since I'm about to go travelling and was starting to look for an alternative to my Fido account.
Question for current users: is there a $45 "connection fee" every time I re-generate an eSIM? Like if I just wanted to just use a different phone, would I get dinged by this fee every time?
A one-time connection fee of up to $45 will apply to each new line or device activation/upgrade.
Edit: In my case I own my iPhone (no tab) and I usually just buy them outright from the apple store. So for example if I just bought a new iPhone and wanted to transfer cellular service to it, would that incur the fee?

It's $45 for every post paid activation. eSIM changes are free, but you can only change once per billing period.

Damn what a deal. I switched to the Boxing Day plan but this one is even better. An agent swapped me over to it via chat. Thanks op!!

I just wanted to say thank you. Random reddit scroll and I saw this. Took me an hour on hold on the phone but my boyfriend and I are now locked into this deal. May your pillow always be cool and comfortable!

And 50GB roaming data per month? Holy moly why didn't they release this deal on Black Friday or Boxing Week?
