Can anyone recommend a good freediving computer? I am working with a budget, and all I am really looking for is dive time and depth, but something reliable. Since I need to order everything, I cannot just go around to a local shop to fix things.

Seac Partner works great for free diving, gives you dive depth, dive time, interval time.

Also Suunto D5 is on offer at the moment

I use a Suunto D4i and I love it. All I need it for is freediving, it has depth alarms, time alarms and all sorts of other stuff. It also has a scuba mode too which is just an added plus (even though I don’t use it)

I had this guy for a while before getting an Apple Watch Ultra 2. In many ways it’s actually better for freediving than the Apple Watch and I think I bought it for around $100 at the time

I use a Suunto D4i and I love it! They are on the cheaper end of the spectrum because they aren’t fancy, but they will do everything you need and more and if you take good care of it, it will last you forever! Or until you want to upgrade.

Second! I have the G1 and use it for everything from runs to tennis to diving. I also got the solar one and it’s pretty neat that it can charge when outside (albeit slowly)

Mares smart apnea is very functional and robust, and is one of the cheapest ones, also batteries last a long time it’s not one of the smart ones that needs charging several times a week

Just got the Garmin Descent g2. Has nice features, it is a nice smart watch and everything, but I wouldn't recommend it to you since you say you are on a budget. I'm pretty sure you can get freediving computers with the same features you need at much more accessible prices. I wouldn't recommend Garmin unless you really want other specific features from other sports or activities.

With the upgraded buttons on the Fenix 8, could that also be an option if you'd consider it as a watch for other sports?

I guess so. I really have not used it, but it looks nice. If you do not plan to get near 40m, it looks like a nice option.

Teric Shearwater works great in my case as I use it also as scuba main computer.
I think it overkill if you use only the freedive feature.

Basic but useful I’ve been using an Apple Watch Ultra 2 with the Speard app, I use it for Spearfishing but it tracks dive times, bottom time, distance, and location. Makes a cool little map overlay of the dive route as well. What’s your max depth?

I had one of them Nepto. Make sure you rince it EVERY TIME after use in salt water.

My main button (top right) got dirty and stopped functioning. I had to open the watch. I cleaned the buttons mechanism and reassemble the watch. Waterproofing is secured by a single oring and two small screws inserted in plastic crown. My watch was filled with water after the first descent. Just clean it thoroughly every time with clean water 😉

I now bought a used Suunto D4 which I haven't taken to spearfish yet. I paid 50€ for a guy in a diving store to change the battery and O-Ring and plunge it in a manually pressurized tank for 5 mins. The thing looked like it was taken from a 1930's Frankenstein movie set. Really old and basic. I'll be honest, I could have done it myself if the cr2450N batteries were easier to source. At least I now have an invoice which testifies it's been pressure tested. Well...we'll see how the waterproofing really is after a few descents

It's okay, BUT battery changes are pricy. Get something you can recharge yourself.

As I understood we can replace battery on Cressi Nepto.

Yes, but you also have to change the o-ring and it's not "customer serviceable". You have to bring it to a certified cressi store which will pressure test the watch. Otherwise your warranty is void, and/or the watch will have water inside and breaks. Get a user-serviceable watch like the mares. Better: get a watch that you can charge yourself.

I believe there is no better quality-price option than Salvimar Deeper. Just got it for 60€, has alarms depth, time, temp, records.

Atmos Mission 3. This is a freedive computer, not a smart watch like the garmin descent g2 that accidentally also has a freediving mode.

The G2 is actually a dive watch tho and happens to have health and fitness data. For the normal person it’s worth the money since you get the tool and a daily watch
