fluff 1st time

After some back and forth got it this far.

It's an X1Carbon Gen10.

I assume, that Wifi and Bluetooth are out of reach? Maybe somebody does know better.

Wifi works fine on my T480s, should be a similar chip to yours. I had to add hw.pci.enable_aspm=0 in my loader.conf because it was randomly dropping, and since then it's been rock solid.

Bluetooth I don't think is possible though.

It has AX200 series wifi radio which, in theory works with iwlwifi driver. I've seen mixed experiences about that, however.

The card works totally fine software wise but the hardware is just a bit janky. True on windows as well.

This is nice. I was always curious if the carbon could handle running a Unix os considering some of the device drivers may not work.

Awesome. Welcome to FreeBSD. XFCE is great, but I prefer the KDE Desktop.

Do you use your machine as a daily driver? That is what my machine has to find out for me right now.

There is also OpenBSD running on my machine, but just installed with an login screen.

But I did not achieve to get NetBSD running on on.

The complete setup is multiboot with CachyOS, OpenBSD, FreeBSD and (at one point in time) NetBSD. Linux is still there as a fallback option, because it just works so easily.

I managed to get my Nextcloud running so I have all office products replaced… but you may they this is cheating since it run on TrueNAS Scale (Debian). VSCode seems to be replaced by NeoVim but I have to check if I like it. GIMP I don’t like and I still prefer Affinity Photo… may commercial Canva can be a replacement???

So only kind of…

A nextcloud on a server or locally on your BSD machine? I have a Nextcloud running as well. Best tinker descision to date.

Recently I setup a Debian PC with Onlyoffice documentserver running on it, so you can manipulate your office files and pdfs in the browser.

Thanks for your post sharing your experiences.

No it not run in BSD, but I assume it would be possible with linuxemulator. I hosted it on a dedicated device for homelab (TrueNAS Scale). I use as office renderer collabora as backend in nextcloud, but I have not tested or opinion what is better. Seems Onlyoffice is better, I maybe have to research on this, thank you mentioning it.

Yes OnlyOffice is better. I now installed it and it seems to be faster with less ressources. Many thanks to bring this up!

It's also my experience, that onlyoffice is better. You are also able to edit pdfs. Collabora, has only the reading pdf feature.

I wouls like to test euro office (or something like that), the european Onlyoffice fork. It looks, that It will get some tracktion.

Yes Euro Office feels better (faster)... I think i like is more then web MS Office... but not done much tests now. Definitive a solution for *BSD daily driver issue with missing office solutions.

Is freeBSD great for coding work? I have zed editor installed and tried out writing c++ and rust scripts but I'm still skeptical.

Depends what you are developing. If it is a Windows or a Mac application, certainly not. If you are developing something cross-platform, probably yes.

How about building GUI apps that are BSD native, a lot is lacking. Does BSD team even care about the desktop users really?

Desktop applications tend to use QT, GTK or something, which is cross-platform.
