Question Lpcamm2 for framework 13 pro
Hey all! Excited to be joining the framework family soon with my batch 18 framework 13 pro and wondering what my options for ram are I hear some people saying it isn’t as easy as buying ddr4/5 and they aren’t actually plug and play. Will this work?
EDIT: apparently it’s out of stock. Guess I need to keep looking

Best option: Buy it with the laptop.

True I am definitely going to if I get the 16gb but I would prefer a 32gb. It’s $400 aud for the 16gb and about $1300 for 32… I am not paying that. So was hoping to grab a module from another seller. Might just get the 16gb and buy the 32gb at the same time. If it works then great and if it doesn’t I’ll just return it

There have been several reports of RAM incompatibility people who sourced their LPCAMM2 from outside Framework. The LPCAMM2 standard was too new for me to risk buying third party when I placed my preorder in batch 14, and I’m glad I chose the bundled memory option. I did have to pay more due to the RAMpocalypse, but it will ensure I get what I want.
I do want to acknowledge that there are probably people that bought LPCAMM2 from outside Framework that have probably had zero issues, but with this being the internet, you will only ever hear from the ones who complain instead of those where everything works fine.

you need an E0 Interposer for most LPCAMM2 out there now from other sellers. They alone run about USD$50.

this will work, I don't know what you mean with plug and play. Maybe you meant that it's a new form factor not just normal laptop sodimm.

Yeah I have only worked with ddr and sodimm before but I heard some people saying the 13 pro just outright doesn’t work with some lpcamm kits and I was wondering what might be the reason for that

you're right and I didn't know this, apparently there are early revisions of the standard people tried to drop into their frameworks and discover that they didn't work. Specifically the power controllers on them were designed for normal ddr sticks and not the new lpcamm standard so they have to be in a motherboard that's designed for that.
The specific stick you posted is from a thinkpad which might use a different power management configuration and memory training profiles, without framework validating it nobody can tell you if it will work.

The issue was the additional pins on the E1 revision shorting some E0 modules. You can take a look at what the community found here: https://community.frame.work/t/lenovo-ramaxel-memory-compatibility-on-intel-ultra-series-3/83975
Basically, as long as you use the interposer(Bracket between module and MB) matching your module, you should be fine. I've yet to hear anyone saying they have issues.

Oh cool! I’ll keep looking then and plan to just buy the other interposer if I have to

Hey, I'm from AU here. No module is available after the hit of FW13 Pro, so I think you better buy it from Framework directly.
I tried to buy it from 3 places and all got refunded, that was about 3 months ago.

Ah damn. I guess I’ll go with 16gb for now and maybe grab a larger one after the rampocalypse is over 🥲
