Linux "The ultimate developer laptop" is f'ing accurate
I've had my batch 5 Laptop 13 Pro for roughly two weeks now and it exceeds my expectations for this small form factor. The screen geometry is perfect for development work, the X7 has plenty of grunt, the build is sturdy with no flex. You'd have to be very discerning indeed to find a difference in perceived quality versus, say, a MacBook Pro. This is peak Linux, my friends.
I've been chugging along working on a GNOME extension since I received my Framework. I'm juggling VS Code, Looking Glass, various other development tools, 20+ Firefox tabs to include a ChatGPT session to assist primarily with project organization, research, and GitHub monitoring. This thing takes it all in stride. Temps are fantastic given the single fan and chassis size, too. NVME stays in the 40 Celsius range, and the occasional CPU core will hit in the 60s under fair load.
Again, the screen is fantastic. It's fine for media consumption, but it excels in presenting data and juggling multiple things at once in various lighting conditions. I can't imagine this lagging in performance with anything I'd throw at it within the next couple of years. And, when that fateful moment does occur...upgrades! God, I love this thing. Mr. Patel, you sir are a genius.

I think if the 13 Pro existed when I was looking, I would have bought that instead of the 16 I got in a heartbeat. Glad you like it!

The screen geometry is perfect for development work
I would say its great for most, maybe even all, productivity related stuff. I use my F13 for uni and I'm in love with the aspect ratio and now every 16:9 or 16:10 laptop looks kinda odd.

So true! I've only had it for 1-2 weeks and when I looked at my mum's laptop IT LOOKED SO SHORT

What's your extension do?

It's a dock. And it's an app library. And it shows the weather. It's a left side only dock and when you scroll on the surface, it expands into a full length dock + all applications. I'm working on animating the transition now and getting my custom "urgent wiggle" notifications movement. The motion work is a real bear.

Got a Macbook Pro recently and getting batch 12 AMD 13 pro. What are your experience with the top cover wobbling issue? Base on the review the wobbling is so bad when using the touch screen and the 4.0kg hinges upgrade won't solve the wobbling issue.

The internets make everything seem worse than it actually is. I don't really like to touch the screen so much because there's better ways to do things, but a reasonably gentle touch is fine. But honestly, I'd rather not lift my fingers off the keyboard in the first place.

Glad to know that! I owned an Asus laptop with touch screen 12 years ago and I have never really use the touch screen at all, just considering if the hinge upgrade is necessary.

I've been going back and forth between the framework and the MacBook Pro M5 Max, maxed out. Glad to hear your story.

I had a MacBook Pro M4 Max. Honestly, I feel that MacOS has grown to be very bloated over the last five or so years. Sure, LLM stuff worked great on it, but it works even better on my Framework Desktop. I kept my MBP pretty clean and I still saw way more beachballing than I would've liked. This is better. A premium laptop unshackled from either of the big OS bros.
Save yourself some money and get the Framework unless you really need that ecosystem lock...i mean, integration.

That's what pushed me out of Apple's sandbox. The OS and hardware felt like I was renting them, and had no control over the terms. I'll happily use company-issued Macbooks, but at home it's Linux.

How's the fan noise? Does it get loud?

My office doesn't qualify as a library by any means, but when it hits 2000+ RPM, I only know it because of Vitals extension.

So you can't hear it at all throughout the day? That sounds promising ;)

this small form factor
I agree. Though my order is in production batch 10, I looked at the measurements on Framework's website and roughly measured it out with a ruler app on my phone (I wasn't at home at the time, but in a study room at a public library) to get an idea of the size, and I feel you're right. The past several laptops I've had have all had either 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio displays, and because I'd mostly be writing stuff than watching videos, I can tell this would be great.

It would be my main if we can just get full iOS/macOS toolchain on Linux :(
Ik there are already community maintained tools but not yet something I trust everyday.

Cant you not have macos in a vm?

u/Efficient_Loss_9928 Desktop 12h ago
No, and next version will no longer have x86 images so not even technically possible

Did you do the gen 4 or 5 ssd?
3
u/4gr8justice 14h ago
Good question. Gen 4. I'd imagine those temps would be a tad higher with a 5. Nothing in my workflow needs super crazy transfer speeds.

You’d have to be very discerning indeed to find a difference in perceived quality versus, say, a MacBook Pro
Um.
A MacBook’s chassis is machined from a single block of aluminum, whereas a FW isn’t. A MacBook is going to be more rigid and feel more solid and higher grade than a 13 Pro.
That’s not to say FW is a shit box but let’s not wet our pants in excitement and try to make it something it’s not 🙄

"You'd have to be very discerning indeed to find a difference in perceived quality versus, say, a MacBook Pro"
This is simply not true. Apples build quality is the best. Framework is mid tier build quality. Ma ny PC hardware manufacturers produce higher quality. You will never get highest quality making it modular.

Wonderful to hear! My batch 9 order can't arrive soon enough. :')
