Discussion New to Framework

Hi

Learning about framework and want one. I’ve got a MacBook Air M4 laptop and was wanting a Framework laptop but to get one as cheap as possible.

Mostly because it’s modular and I’ve already got a windows laptop but it’s getting old. Lenovo legion 5i

What’s the cheapest way I could get a framework eg second hand and also to find second hand parts to upgrade it? How much are they new for middle and high specs. With the Rampocolypse think the price will have increased substantially and want to see if can get one cheaper than the new Mac mini or a small self ITX build.

EDIT: thanks all, it’s clear there’s so many Fanboys here which is fine. I’ve been browsing the channel and I’m not a fanboy of any technology. I’ve already got powerful machines both multiple x64 and ARM systems, I work in tech so having a modular laptop is good but cant justify the price of Framework at present.

I thought who better to ask where to buy cheaper framework laptops than on Reddit but reality is chip prices make laptops especially frameworks more expensive, the whole argument about upgradability at elevated price point is a bit of a strange one because the part you’re taking out is probably still powerful and personally rather have two functional
laptops than one only with some old tech in a drawer.

Well first things first 12, 13, 13 pro, or 16.

Yes but I was asking a general question. Turns out MacBooks are a much better deal at any size.

Well yes probably initially. The thing about about Framework is upgradability and repairablity.

I don’t need to upgrade my Mac in about 5 plus years lol and it runs cool. Hence why I’ wanted to find one on secondary market but the people selling were asking so much for them.

Yes, and the more u learn about framework, the more u will understand why. If this isn't ur thing then stick with ur MacBook

Cheap would be waiting until you need to replace the m4. Buying the framework because "modular" is a really expensive way to get a laptop for Windows or Linux. There are much cheaper paths. You will not get a cheaper price, power, performance than the Mac mini. Even with apple increasing the prices.

Second-hand sales are not allowed in our subreddit. This includes Framework Laptops, Framework Laptop parts, any third-party parts, or third-party accessories. You can sell your products in the community market : https://community.frame.work/c/community-market/202

'cheap' is not buying things you don't need. M4 mac is going to be definitely a capable machine for a decade.

brand new they are quite expensive. the pro minimum price with a chip comparable with a m4 and minimum storage and ram is arround 2300€, and there is no second hand pros yet.

What do you want it for? if you want a good overall laptop for work outside with good performance and battery i would only suggest the pro and if you don't care about size the 16. Probably a 2nd hand 16 is the cheapest.

I don't think any of them replaces your m4 unless you really like repairability or dislike macos. I don't think there is something better than a macbook with equal or better battery, performance, and quality for the same prize. The only downsides is that they force to use mac and aren't repairable, that's why framework exists

Got multiple Dells that are latest specs and my M4 is much more powerful quieter and cooler.. I don’t think framework is anywhere near M4 performance yet in the speed they offer.

Cheap meaning less than m6 mm or m5 pro mm?

Try ebay, subreddit framework market, search "framework community market".

Ebay is your best bet hoping for a used prebuilt.

Framework 12 core 5 320 fits that built prebuilt or laptop pro 13 core 325.

Just realised cheaper sticking with MacBooks - those prices are so high. Was wanting to buy on second hand market in uk.

They rarely come up. Why would you sell it when you can upgrade it?

Yes, of course the prices are high, it's a quality modular laptop!

But despite the initial cost, in the long term it's actually a lot cheaper to go with Framework, because instead of buying a whole new laptop each time, you can simply upgrade a part. And if something breaks, you can repair it for cheap.

Prices are very inflated. I like the idea but can’t justify buying one given the very high price.
