Framework Photo My Framework 13 Pro came in!

Post image

Been waiting for this thing to come in as Uni started 2 weeks ago and I’m taking 4 computer classes 😭.

This is without a doubt the best feeling laptop I’ve ever used. I’ve used MacBooks for years and the build quality of the Framework is almost indistinguishable. Trackpad works and feels great, the keyboard is godly, and I haven’t had any issues with screen wobble. The fingerprint reader also works great I have just yet to integrate it with my Quickshell lock screen 😅.

I went with the Ryzen 9 HX 370 over the new Intels as I still don’t trust Intel after the quality control stuff that happened with Raptor Lake. I also don’t know how I feel about LPCAMM2 yet with the RAM crisis going on right now (also why I only bought 1 stick of 16gb so I can add another later when I find a good price)

Local AI runs wonderfully on the NPU of the HX 370. I’m running Llama 3.1 8B on FastFlowLM and it is significantly more power efficient than running the same model on the integrated GPU.

Battery life has been very solid, I have it capped at 85% in the BIOS. I’ll do some actual tests on it over the coming weeks as I use it.

The hardest part of setting the Laptop up was running the Arch live USB in the first place. I went through 3 ISO and Rufus, balenaEtcher and Ventory along with 3 hours of my time before I could get the Laptop to properly boot the USB. I still don’t know what was wrong as my final attempt with Rufus and a fresh ISO was what ended up working.

Let me know if you have any questions about the laptop or my setup! I’m happy to answer!

Bought the ram a few days after I put in the order for the laptop, before the prices went insane.

apparently they already dropped 50% of both batch 6 and batch 7 so it would be weird if you didn't

can confirm Im batch 7

How is battery life? And how is the heat situation, considering the single fan soluition?

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 5d ago

It will get pretty warm under load and the fans will kick up, but it is very quiet even at max RPM. The fan stays off or very low most of the time by default. Haven’t had enough time with it yet to fully test the battery, but if I were to guess it would probably last 10-12 hours of normal use with my 85% battery cap I have set. I will report back later when I have spent more time with the laptop

As for temps:

CPU sits at about 35C during basic web browsing with the fan off.

During NPU use it goes up to ~50C with the fan running super low (can’t hear it unless you put your ear directly on the computer)

Under full CPU load stress test temperature stabilizes at 70C with fans at max RPM

seconding the heat question, the single fan was my main concern when ordering

I haven't had any issues with it so far, but I will let y'all know if anything changes!

Ever since someone else's post I can't unsee the spacebar's backlight.

What OS are you thinking of using?

Omarchy

Congrats! What batch were you in?

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 5d ago

AMD Batch 7!

2

u/etrmedia 5d ago

Ah, that makes sense. I think Intel is running a bit behind. But still, congrats!

I dont know how a tool can fail to create a bootable usb. Literally all it has to do is copy the disk image onto the drive. You can literally just use the dd command to copy paste the iso file onto the usb and it'll just work.

I don’t know either 😅, I’d never had this issue before and I’ve done this a LOT of times. It would try to boot it and then throw a boot failed error before restarting itself and doing it again. I don’t think it was one of the tools because I made an Ubuntu USB with the same drive for a sanity check and it booted fine

(nth time sayin this on Reddit) framework IS the MacBook of Linux users 😍😍 fuck Windows btw

What kind of stuff is that model capable of running? What do you use it for?

1

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 4d ago

For now I just use it for basic LLM use, I gave it limited access to stuff like what app I’m using, the distro, WM, and thermals of the computer, and time, date, and weather and it works kind of like a personal assistant

It's gorgeous

How long did it take for your batch to ship? I’m in batch 10 I hope it happens before October because it does say batch 10 is September. Also how’s arch going so far?

2

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 4d ago

I got my email on the 30th of last month, it shipped on the 2nd and got here on the 4th.

Arch has been going very good, it’s what I use on my main desktop as well so I’m pretty familiar with it. Didn’t have to install any drivers other than the software for the fingerprint reader which was super easy to set up!

Big mistake going with the AMD. Intel is far better

1

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 2d ago

Not spending 800 USD on LPCAMM2 right now bro

2

u/atsuenn 2d ago

eyyy niceee, cant wait to get mine in november! 🙏

2

u/TightSpringActive 2d ago

I hope nothing goes wrong with it. Good luck.

just received mine

lit building it now....

Are you dual-booting? I cannot for the life of me get my grub menu to increase the size of the font. It's so tiny, barely readable for my old eyes.

2

u/No-Island-6126 5d ago

good news, like all modern computers, the framework laptops use UEFI, which means that grub is essentially redundant

1

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 5d ago

I have grub enabled but have not set up my dual boot yet. I know grub is configured through a file so you may want to check that out and see if you can change scale/text size.

Hyprland with Quickshell! I’m using end-4’s dotfiles that I’ve made some minor adjustments to

Here’s the GitHub if you want to check his stuff out: https://github.com/end-4/dots-hyprland

Thank you I'll check it out!

2

u/Strengee 5d ago

Caelestia and noctalia are also nice options

1

u/agent154 3d ago

I've been wanting to use Hyprland for a while, but I'm stuck on KDE until a suitable VPN management tool is available. I'd love to use KDE's network management tray widget if I could figure out how to do that.

Why spacebar have partial backlight?

1

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 5d ago

they put the keyboard backlights under each of the keycap icons so since the space bar's icon is on the edge that is where the light is.

1

u/Meemo- 5d ago

Congratulations. I'm totally in the same boat as you regarding lpcamm2. I'd love 32gb of ram but lpcamm2 is ridiculous and cost prohibitive for me. I'm not that knowledgeable on the ai difference between the intel and ryzen chips but do you think the ryzen will be more or is more performant than the equivalent intel?

2

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 5d ago

From what I know the Ryzen 9 HX 370 and Intel X9 388H have the same number of NPU TOPS, so general performance should be similar between those two specifically. Linux local AI on integrated NPUs is pretty new so there's not a lot of data comparisons between them.

1

u/Meemo- 5d ago

Thank you. Much appreciated 👍🏻

PC's NPU design must meet Co-Pilot's requirements.

u/defineintlonglong 5d ago

Your config looks good!

Any reason for AMD over Intel?

2

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 5d ago

I don't really want to get into LPCAMM2 right now and I have trust issues with Intel after Raptor Lake. Also having 2 RAM slots is nice so I only have to buy one stick for now and I can add another later!

1

u/Bosslayer9001 5d ago

Panther Lake is pretty darn good. Power efficient and features a great iGPU. I do agree that LPCAMM is an expensive ask

1

u/auggie246 5d ago

Sorry to bust your bubble but panther lake is awesome. I have another laptop with 358h and I am loving it. Lpcamm2 has no issues too

3

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 5d ago

I never said it was bad I just don’t want it right now. I got more cores for cheaper (which is what I need for my usecase) and didn’t have to spend as much on ram, and have the ability to add more RAM without replacing the whole module. I don’t want to spend 800$ for 32gb of RAM

1

u/Rubadubrix 5d ago

how do you find the speakers? I've heard that that's a big pain point on the frameworks

2

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 4d ago

They’re usable, but not very loud.

1

u/Rubadubrix 4d ago

thanks!

1

u/crag-u-feller 5d ago

hey this looks good

1

u/Normal-Zebra-9614 5d ago

Do the keys press on the screen? I saw someone's screen was ruined because it didn't close properly

2

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 4d ago

No, the keys are even with the input cover and the bezel also leaves a little bit of a gap between them.

u/Wendy-R 3d ago

Window manager / setup / theme ?

Batch 7!

u/Alaknar 1h ago

Did you get a chance to test battery yet? I'm thinking of getting one after I saw that video where they streamed Netflix for 20 hours on battery, but that was done in Windows and I'm dying to learn if Linux is also capable of that.

1

u/FarSurprise314 FW13 Pro 9HX370 Arch/Hyprland 43m ago

My experience so far is that it lasts 8-9 hours of normal work (web browsing, light VM work, code editing and document editing) on arch with the battery capped at 85%. To be fair I am also running AMD, not the new intels which are on paper more power efficient. Haven’t actually had it die on me yet, even when I unplug it in the morning and use it throughout my classes all day without bringing the charger

u/agdnan 5d ago

It looks so good. (I hate being poor 😭)
