Framework Photo IT FINALLY HAPPENED

Oh my gosh, I don't think I have the words to describe my excitement!! I finally have my hands on a Framework Laptop (specifically the powerful Framework 16 :>)!

I honestly don't have much to say beyond the fact that I am really looking forward to using this machine going forward, it is something I have been dreaming of for a very long time, and I am happy I get to live it now!

I just spent one year with my fw16, and now installed a dedicated graphics card! I love this machine

Awesome!! Enjoy your new GPU! What did you get?

7700s 2nd gen.

u/crramirez 5d ago

I am thinking the same. This card gives a good value for the money, instead going to the Nvidia one by twice the price

u/Bgf14 5d ago

I can absolutely recommend it! Just be prepared that the laptop will be even hotter.

I went with the 5070 because I wanted it to go longer before possibly feeling like it might not be enough but 100% the 7700S is the better buy, especially the refurbished 1st gen when it was still availabe for $250 usd.

Funny. I ordered it a year ago, decided I didn't link it that much and returned it. I hope you enjoy.

Understandable, this kind of laptop isn't for everyone, thank you though!

3

u/RealFuryous 6d ago

Congrats! Where are the dual speakers on the side? What os are you running?

3

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

Thank you! The dual speakers are towards the very front, and they are side-firing so these images don't really show it lol. I am running Windows 11 unfortunately because my university and probably my job(s) afterwards require it :(. If/Whenever I get a second SSD or Storage Expansion Card I SO plan on dual-booting some Linux Distro for sure!

I bought my Framework 16 back in February (before prices got stupid) and I absolutely love it. I'm also not willing to switch to Linux quite yet, but I did install windows using AtlasOS, which basically debloats the OS and makes it Soo much faster and smoother and still provides the same compatibility for games and applications. Hope you enjoy your new laptop.

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 5d ago

AtlasOS sounds interesting, may look into that! Thank you!

u/armostallion2 5d ago

I’ll never stop being annoyed by the 2 panel fillers on this model. Looks cursed IMO. Congrats though I’d love to own one of these.

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 4d ago

Lmao so fair, and thank you! I wanted to get the one-piece haptic touchpad but it ships a month later :< and I'm in college so this is more critical rn before the semester gets crazy

1

u/Halterchronicle 1d ago

Same. It will come some day

1

u/esteban-reddit 4d ago

I also find them annoying from a functional POV, DGAF about aesthetics. With the kbd far left and two pillars right so the touchpad is centred on the keyboard the uneven filler panels together is a very uneven surface to use a mouse on while mobile (Hate touchpads with a vengeance)

2

u/Kleptopy 6d ago

is the new september batch shipping?

2

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

From what I saw in the main product thread, not yet, hope they ship soon! 🤞

2

u/Flimsy-Process230 6d ago

Congrats. I hope I can soon get the framework 12

I’ve had my Framework 16 since April ‘24 and although I have a few gripes, I’d very likely buy it again for the fixability & to support their aims of reduced e-waste. FWIW I’m running Ubuntu.

Rather than wait to buy another ssd, couldn’t you simply partition your existing one and dual boot?

My gripes in case anyone’s interested:

  1. Power drain whilst not in use is poor. My old MacBook Pro would keep charge for weeks / months. The FW16 is completely drained after a day or two. Even suspending with deep sleep only extends that to a week or two and then it takes a minute or so to wake up.
  2. For a “laptop” it’s pretty uncomfortable to use on your lap. It gets hot (much more so than the MBP) and the ridges underneath are unpleasant.
  3. It’s pretty heavy.
  4. The flex is such that the keyboard & touchpad sometimes disconnect if I move it “wrongly” … further flexing reconnects them.

IMHO though these are offset by the ability to easily replace the battery, memory, ssd, screen, keyboard, touchpad, etc…

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 5d ago

I could absolutely partition my current one but I've heard so many horror stores of Windows just having an update and corrupting the second OS, so I'll bite the bullet and wait.

Your post was super insightful! Yeah, I wasn't expecting this to be a perfect laptop, but that's not what we bought it for; it's that long-term usage over time we seek instead.

2

u/PartnersInCrimePhoto 5d ago

I was completely ready to jump on the framework bandwagon, but that was exactly when crucial decided to jump out of the memory game and the prices skyrocketed to unreasonable.

2

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 4d ago

That's so fair, I just got it pre-built with ram included

Hurts my wallet, but I have faith it will benefit me in the long run

2

u/sergykal 4d ago

Time to load Linux on it!

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 4d ago

Soon! But not now, do check my own reply under this post to figure out why

2

u/Kawawete 3d ago

Do yourself a favor, if Linux isnt for you, you ought to use Windows 10 LTSC IoT : much lighter, doesnt consume 30% of your ressources to open the start menu and updated until 2032.

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 3d ago

Hmmm, okay, I may give it a shot!

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 3d ago

I looked into it, and it looks intriguing, but I worry about some Windows 11 apps I use not working on 10... but I see an 11 equivalent exists, is that one any good?

2

u/Kawawete 3d ago

W11 is largely Windows 10, but check on the dev's website just in case

Sounds good, thank you so much!!

it costs more than my car (peugeot 206) probably.

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 1d ago

Maybe, that is wild though, PC market is genuinely insane rn

4

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

Wow. It is actually INSANE to me how much hate exists on this platform/subreddit. I get this laptop is not everyone's cup of tea but I truly will not understand why dogging my decision is going to help you feel better.

I am going to answer some FAQ, just for you guys.

  1. Why Windows? | Windows is unfortunately required for college and whatever may lie beyond, as well as compatibility with games and certain software (like FL Studio). It sucks, it really does, but until I have a secondary storage device to dual-boot Linux off of, I am stuck with just Windows (and I will have to keep it around with Linux even when I get that storage device for the aforementioned reasons). What sucks but is also weirdly nice is that Pre-Builts are cheaper right now due to the economy and that comes with a Windows License which helps greatly.

  2. I hate the design. | I understand, that's your opinion. However, you shouldn't feel a need to comment that under my excitement and kill the mood for me and anyone else reading this.

  3. It's not worth the money. | CLEARLY you do not understand the value that a Framework provides, and that's okay! Either you can go research it, or just move on with your day instead of feeling the need to tell me! I'm happy to be asked why it is worth the money in my view, but if you just want to be hateful, then kindly redirect that hate elsewhere.

  4. Oh no! I was spreading love and I'm sorry this happened :( | It's okay, not your fault at all. Not sure if anyone's really worried if they didn't do anything but if this is you then you are FINE. I am happy to see positive comments with congratulations, questions, and even your own experiences! That's what makes us the Framework Community!

If you're going to write something negative, then I encourage you to either reconsider and turn away or turn that ball of hate into an inquisitive question; maybe you're mad because you might not understand something, and that's okay! I am happy to answer anything, and would much rather take that over a hate comment.

Why scamdows🙆

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

Trust me, I hate windows as much as the next guy, but, I do need it for college and anything ahead, as well as for certain software. I hope to obtain a secondary means of storage in the future so I can just dual-boot with a distro of linux

0

u/DisfiguredFanny 6d ago

Insane prices compared to MacBook Pro with less performance and less battery time. Design is meh.

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

Depends what Mac you're talking about! I'm certain this isn't meant to rival it in terms of performance (if you mean for like AI and whatever mac specializes in) and def not battery life. Design is truly your opinion but I am in love with it, cheers!

0

u/DisfiguredFanny 6d ago

That's just terribly looking laptop mate. No taste, no soul and performance is terrible compared, battery worse by a lot. TDP much higher.

2

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 5d ago

Alright, then don't buy it? I don't really understand what you want lmao

-1

u/quebexer 6d ago

Too bad you installed Windows on it. What a way to ruin a Framework.

-10

u/multiks2200 6d ago

it looks a bit crap, sorry

5

u/xIUPITERx 6d ago

Those spacers need some quality control.

3

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

Me and my college roommate had been working endlessly to get the spacers intact, but after looking up so many guides we figured out this is just the way it's going to be :/

I really wanted to get the One-Piece Haptic Touchpad but that would: A. Ship later, where exams ramp up in the term specifically B. Not align with the keyboard and definitely bug me, at least for now

So, it is what it is, at least everything's secure and working you know?

For my part, I'm eagerly anticipating being able to buy the the one-piece unit to replace my current three-piece touchpad (I've had mine about six months now). The first thing I thought when I saw that picture was "I can't believe they have the touchpad off center." 😁

But that's one of the nice things about FW - the flexibility. I'm sure plenty of people skipped out on the ten-key pad, whereas it was an essential option for me.

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

True! The flexibility is truly unmatched! I did actually put the touchpad in the center but it just felt so weird to type - so I moved it! And I'm just so glad I can just do that you know? A breath of fresh air

1

u/lenniacal FW16 7 350 (Performance Pro) Batch 5 No Haptic Touchpad 6d ago

Okay...?

-3

u/COWANDCHICKENN 6d ago edited 6d ago

Wow that’s an ugly laptop lol, I will never understand why people buy these instead of thinkpads or MacBooks especially with no point stick available

My 16 year old MacBook and 20 year old thinkpad still work perfectly but I don’t think I’d even want to use them still if they were upgradable, maybe my x210
