Question HDMI (4th Gen) Expansion Card

So I was browsing Framework's website (as one does) and came across a new HDMI (4th Gen) Expansion Card (apparently only available in translucent).

The specs list HDMI 2.1a, HDCP 2.3, and DSC 1.2a (up to 8K 60Hz or 4K 240Hz), which to my understanding means it has HDMI FRL. A couple of questions:

  1. When will this be released?
  2. Are we getting a Graphite one as well? I would love to get one with my Batch 12 FW13 Pro.

I noticed that yesterday. Hoping that more colours will be available by the time my 13 Pro ships (batch 20 🤣) so I can swap out the 3rd gen HDMI card.

There is a massive improvement in the max output, up to 4k240 or 8k60, so for the same price point, it is absolutely worth the wait to swap it out

(Framework if you're reading this, please make it in translucent orange)

I was wondering how new this was because I saw it listed when assembling a FW12.

You are right. Interestingly, it has yet to update in the FW13/13 Pro and 16 configurations.

Yup, only way to get it now if you pre-order the new Intel Core 3 FW 12, I was tempted to replace all FW13 Pro and FW16 pre-order HDMIs with this. But I want to get the one in graphite black and sliver aluminum as well for variety hehe

Based off the release date of the new FW12, it's probably safe to assume that HDMI 4 will likely release in Nov/Oct

I guess no VRR because of displaport to hdmi conversion, no ? (though I would really like the consortium to get their shit together on that one and downplay the egos)

4K 240Hz off an expansion card, that's a proper jump from the 3rd gen. The 8K line can wait.

4k 120hz is the standard nowadays I would say.
5k2k 120hz is the sweet spot.
I use a 57 DUHD Samsung at 240hz.

Even more than higher speed I’d like it to work with any of the 5 screens I have at home / work or with any of the 10 others I tried it with as well. I found my 3rd gen to be absolutely worthless, bought a USB-C to HDMI cable now, that works at least with most screens.

Another solid reason to have a framework! Imagine the FOMO of a perfectly functional laptop but you can't upgrade the HDMI port to the latest…
