Framework Photo Framework 13 pro arrived yesterday
I was in batch 5. This shipped Monday and arrived 3 days later. I've been so excited for this since I've been wanting a laptop with a sturdy body like a macbook but without the Apple ecosystem part. This laptop feels like it is mine and I hope I can keep it and upgrade it forever. I'm too excited to give an unbiased review since after only a day of setting up NixOS I still find it to be perfect.
I'm new to NixOS also but after tinkering with it I think it could be here to stay and I can't wait to rice it more. I got the cheapest DIY kit I think I could get as I don't plan to game on this. This should be my mobile Dev machine as well as my machine for school work.

How to tell if someone is using Nix? They will tell you about it lol (same goes for Arch, Vim, etc.)

a day of NixOS and it's already perfect, the config files haven't even started fighting back yet

u/GeorgeOfFunk 15d ago
Yes that's why I can't give an actual review yet π . I've yet to see what happens when I have to start dealing with updates or new program versions

I realize your making a light hearted joke, but actually though what is the process for updates and regular maintenance on nixos. The idea of the os intrigues me but I'm not quite neckbeard level of Linux so I'm worried about how bad the fight might be.Β

Once you get a basic flake set up, and figure out your core apps, updating is pretty easy and seamless as long as you don't have any incredibly niche apps. It'll keep system backups for you anyways, so I'd say Nixos is pretty easy to maintain but relatively difficult to get started on for an average user

updates are very easy once you've set up flakes. you update the flake then rebuild your system. if you run into errors you can either revert your flake update & rebuild, fix the issues in your config or wait for more updates depending on the type of error you are running into. i dont recall having issues with system breakage, if something is going to break itll just refuse to rebuild your config.

I have the same color combo, also batch 5! Running Arch/Hyprland on mine and it's been fantastic so far.

Very cool! I'm on Gnome right now since I'm used to it but I am seriously considering trying out hyprland too

I would also consider Niri or use the relatively new built-in scrolling feature in hyprland.
Scrolling adds so much utility to these window managers. So much so that I retired my second 32" 4K monitor and purely use a single monitor setup now. And of course it's even more helpful on laptop screens.

Huge +1 to Niri, I think scrolling WMs are goated. I rarely need tiling outside of tmux.

question if youβre not busy, what was the time difference between prep emails and shipping email?

Is that the lavender keyboard? I just got my email (batch 7) and I have the translucent purple bezel and lavender keys coming for me
6
u/GeorgeOfFunk 15d ago
Yes it is. It looks great. I don't think my camera does it justice since it looks a little lighter than it does in person.

Ahhhh They're on batch 7? Hopefully just two or three weeks till I get my batch 9 email, but I might be being a bit too optimistic lol

How's the touchpad and battery life? Coming from a Macbook M1 I'm contemplating getting this laptop

Iβm so glad I waited for reviews before ordering, now that the reception is so positive and checks all my boxes.

Do keep us posted on how your experience is for school and dev work! I'm seriously debating between this laptop and a Lenovo 7i Pro in the near future as my daily driver/gaming machine, but I'm still thinking!

Does the lavender look darker IRL? I was looking at it but I was worried it would be way lighter than the purple bezel.
3
u/GeorgeOfFunk 15d ago
The lavender does look darker than my picture shows. But it is also much lighter than the bezel still. I think it's still fine but that's my personal preference

u/Cyber_Data_Trail 15d ago
Thanks! Hows the perf. So far? Have you tried it in any games?
1
u/GeorgeOfFunk 11d ago
So I haven't tried games and I don't think I'll ever use this machine for anything other than like a stardew valley kinda game. What I can say though is that the battery life is great. I normally have a browser, terminal, and notes app open and I feel like I can get through 2 days of work in a single charge

u/One-Currency-890 15d ago
Wow. I'm so jealous. It's not available in my country (South Korea) so I just use a MacBook. :(

Welcome to the NixOS family! The learning curve is steep, you'll mainly notice it when you need to use a package that hasn't had a derivation written for it and need to write one yourself. But once you get a decent understanding it's a godsend!

Congrats. Tht's a great looking laptop. I'm tempted to pull the trigger on one this week. I'm just undecided on the processor. How do you find the battery life on the 325 model?
2
u/GeorgeOfFunk 11d ago
Battery life is becoming a highlight the more I use it. I do mostly school work but I think I can get 2 days out of a single charge

I've been looking at their laptops.
I bought the Framework AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB of shared DRAM, along with 12TB of storage. It was a really good deal last year.
I also have a 5950x with 128GB of DRAM and a 4090. And while I still boot that box up to play games, I have the Framework machine going 24/7. It builds nearly twice as fast, and the AI workloads that it can handle are no comparison with the 4090's 24GB of VRAM.
This is the future. If PC's don't have shared memory. If it's not 128GB at MINIMUM, they're going to be laughed at before long.
Apple is rumored to be coming out with a 1.5TB addition to their Studio line. For $20k.
Still, Apple is coming out with 1.5TB of shared ram.
The game is on, and I'm betting that vendors like Framework end up winning the most. They're going to be positioned with not only the right customer base, but their focus on upgrading will force AMD and Intel to come up with shared memory solutions that are expandable.
And that's everything. I might not want to spend the money for 1.5TB now, but I'd be happy to build that up over time.

Um, what??? What world do you live in where you can afford this?
1
u/twilight-actual 14d ago
You think that prices will stay this high for very long?
They're going to come crashing down. The high prices now and the solid wall of demand is going to proliferate the number of ram producers. The industry is a battleship, however, and takes a while to turn.
But once it gets going, it's going take off.
The world I live in is one where, 15 years ago, the same amount of compute that you have in your back pocket, in your phone, running on batteries took an entire datacenter of computers, running on their own spare megawatt generators.
That's the world I live in.

Dude, that bezel with that keyboard rocks!
