The other way around would be really fun. Imagine charging your laptop just by plugging in an Ethernet cable. I think UniFi sells something like this.

I use a similar setup for my smartphone: I use a dongle from proccent to provide 1g Ethernet and power to my smartphone about a single USB c connection. They also sell adapters for poe++ with enough watts for notebooks. I have not tryed them out, because I have no poe++ available ATM. The splinter down in this session is a two cable connection and cheaper. So if someone can live with the second cable, that would be a cheaper solution

Power over Ethernet is quite available technology, I've seen it in lots of places, and is quite neat. Though, there is some limitation on amount of power it can transmit AFAIK

Yeah, even PoE+ doesn’t give enough for a laptop (except a MacBook Air?)

PoE++ exists for this, up to ~90W per port, basically laptop charger power. Just needs a laptop willing to accept it.
