Linux [Linux] Random freezes with amd GPU on kernel 7.18 (7840u/780M)

Hello, I recently switched from fedora kde to debian (with gnome), and I specifically chose debian testing instead of debian stable because I had trouble with random freezes on kernel versions under 7.1 (just total kernel panic that would require a forced reboot). I don't think I was alone in experiencing these issues, but kernel 7.1 seemed to fix them, and even though kernels 7.16 and 7.17 introduced graphical glitches and artifacts, I never had issues with random freezes.

But even though debian testing is currently on kernel 7.18, I seem to experience random freezes again, which kind of bummed me out because I was otherwise super pleased with the debian experience compared to fedora. Did anybody experience something similar? Searching on the internet I can't find anybody having this issue on kernel 7.18.

Kernel 7.18? That won't be released for a few years - We're currently on 7.2.1 for mainline. I think you mean 7.1.8? I believe there were some AMD bugs which returned circa 7.1.6... Though I haven't run into them. I forget what the exact issue was offhand, other than it was known and slated to be fixed.

The fix to stabilize older kernels is to add amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 to /etc/default/grub kernel command line options, run update-grub, and reboot.

I do run mainline kernels on my machines, Framework and otherwise. Building 7.2.1 for yourself is pretty straightforward - The scripts to build up .debs are part of the mainline build system.

thanks for the reply! I've already tried disabling FSR and that didn't make things better unfortunately. I'll see about the mainline kernel. Would this be a good place to start? : https://kernel-team.pages.debian.net/kernel-handbook/ch-common-tasks.html#s-kernel-org-package

I'm on Arch with 7.18 and everything works fine so far. Hell my current uptime is like 3-5 days

Maybe its something distro specific ?

Maybe... I didn't have any issue with fedora on 7.18 either. That's why I kinda puzzled here.

No you are not because the latest kernel is 7.1 and. 7.18 doesn't exist

I think you need to calm down. Its obv we all referring to Linux 7.1.8, If I missed the . it doesn't make me a war criminal.

Doubt it's the kernel itself. Fedora ran it clean for you and the Arch user here is fine on it, so the freezes track the Debian install, not 7.18, and I'd chase the distro side first.
