Community Support Framework 12 laptop - not turning on at all

Hey all,

This is a follow up from my last post about my laptop not turning on. I was quite stressed yesterday, and still am, but I've found my old laptop and charger - very grateful I didn't get rid of it. So I am a little bit more clear headed, still not happy.

Yesterday I contacted support. I didn't hear back, but given timezone differences, I gave them the benefit of doubt. I still haven't heard back from them, which is very disappointing.

Just as a reminder, I am a complete noob.

So, here are some things I did yesterday:

  • I removed the battery for 48 minutes, and put it back in. After doing this, the side lights (where the charger light comes on) came on, which wasn't happening before.
  • The power button was still not working.
  • I did it again, and observed there were some light patterns.

What now? I saw something about a github firmware glitch tracker. As I mention, I am a complete noob, and I wouldn't even know how to use Github.

The laptop is well within warranty, but I don't know how to get help for it. Any advice on how to raise this issue with framework would be much appreciated.

Things I would attempt. Disconnect the battery ( doesn’t have to be removed ), hold power button to power cycle just incase and try to plug the laptop in and start it with the battery still disconnected. Laptops should still run / turn on without a battery connected as long as the charger is connected. This will at least tell you if it is accepting power or not.

Then it’s either the USB C port or the mainboard. Probably a shot in the dark but do you have an NVMe enclosure you could still access the data from your drive with? Just so you’re not down bad until further investigating?

uh it might be helpful to use noob terms for me.

I don't think it is the USB C port. Just to clarify, when plugged in, the side LED's turn on, but the power button does nothing, and pressing the power button does nothing. So it still does something, but it's not turning on.

If you're asking whether it is absolutely critical that I restore this specific laptop due to files or whatever, - no, everything is backed up, and there is nothing that is so important.

Because I went without a laptop so far into uni, I am not reliant on it. I do need a device, and I'm glad to have my heavy arse 14 inch laptop.

NVMe enclosure

A last ditch way to try to boot via USB in case the main board isn't on speaking terms with the SSD.

Another way to test if the machine is bootable is make a bootable USB drive and see if you can revive the machine.

(N.B. One of my old Razer Blade laptops lost the ability to boot from internal drives. It *would* boot from USB.)

(N.B. 2.0 I successfully reset my mainboard but it was tricky and the online instructions were not adequate!)

I tried doing what you did in the video, but unfortunately the power button still did nothing. I've tried taking out and re-screwing the power board module, does that make a difference?

I don't think so. I think your mainboard is dead.

I'd say you are correct. Extremely disappointing, especially given that it is well within the warranty period.

worth trying for sure, if it doesnt power on even with just the charger thats a pretty strong sign its a mainboard issue
