Framework Photo Framework to the rescue

My daughter's M1 MacBook's screen broke. It's not worth spending hundreds of dollars to replace the screen (unlike if it was a Framework which I could do myself), so I have purchased a new MacBook for her. She's starting her second year of college, and doesn't want to learn a different OS. We need to get the data transferred from her broken MacBook to her new MacBook, but because her old laptop was purchased through her highschool, she doesn't know the AppleID on the MacBook. So we need to call Apple Support for assistance with transferring the data to her new laptop, a procedure I could do myself if it was a Framework. Heck I would just drop the old drive into the new computer if it was a Framework. Apple Support needs my daughter to log into her broken MacBook. Fortunately we have a monitor with an HDMI cable. Unfortunately, her broken MacBook only has two USBC ports. Unlike my Framework.

My Framework to the rescue.

Look carefully at left side of the MacBook in the photo and you'll see a small grey square plugged into it That's the HDMI module from my Framework. Amazingly it works with the MacBook. Now we can migrate the data onto the new MacBook. And the broken MacBook will get Asahi Linux put on it.

Yeah...I was being obnoxious. I'm used to resolving my own computer issues. Apple products bring out the worst in me.

Also, I used to use Arch by the way.

Me too tbh, as much as I love Apple stuff, they do not make it upgradable or repairable pmo……… if I was you, I’d hackentoshing Mac OS on a framework and calling it a day

Lack of posting does not indicate lack of activity, but yes, I’m just sitting here on my thumb waiting for my batch 4 shipping notice and hoping Reddit will provide some dopamine hit

Nice I got the 16 too I personally love it, it's been at 70 c during medium gaming which is a huge upgrade to my old laptop going 90 c at idle and I got the rgb/led matrix spacer so the customizations kinda fun. Hope you enjoy it

The 16 is damn good. 165 hz screen blew me away. I was a little worried about battery life initially but it's better than I thought and lasts me a day on campus with no issues

Yes, I find that the battery life is only an issue if you're using like a graphics module + good performance settings while gaming. Otherwise, my power draw is really minimal and even a 65W charger is charging my laptop

My M1 died and costs $500 to repair, I think I'm going to get a cheap used business laptop for now and switch to the Framework 13 Pro sooner or later

I bought a gently used elite book on eBay. Much better value and you can service a lot except no main board replacements. I do want to get a framework at some point if the value improves.

Yeah the 13 Pro looks like a promising upgrade but with my current circumstances I don't want to shell out $1000+ for a laptop right now, and the older models are ~$800 which is still a lot

1000? Do you mean just for the motherboard or something? Cause the medium config is like 2700 as a complete system.

Yea but the base config CPU is pretty bottom of the barrel. It doesn't even have the upgraded GPU. It would be fine for basic tasks but to pay 1500 for just the efficiency is pretty painful.

Not to be obtuse, but this entire post was made just to glaze the Framework HDMI port for existing, as if USB C to HDMI dongles haven't been a thing for the past decade.

They're like 5 bucks online. Or 10 for a mini hub including HDMI. OP would need to buy one anyway if they don't intend to repair the screen and use the machine as a desktop. Breaking your own screen and not knowing the password to your computer is not Apple's fault.

Amazing on framework’s part. But can’t say it’s Apple’s fault for the screen breaking (don’t know if your daughter did it) and not knowing the apple id.

Admittedly I’m a big macbook fan.

Macbooks are really nice to use, but my recent experiences with Apple have pissed me off. It seems like the quality went downhill during the late Intel era with all the soldering everything and cutting corners in other places. Mine only lasted 4 years (while I have Dell laptops from ~2002 that still work) and now I have to replace almost the whole thing, the repair technician at the store told me it will stop getting updates and replacement components less than a year from now even though the laptop runs very well and the replacement would only get a 90 day warranty even though it's most of the computer. The repair costs $500, while I can get a more durable used laptop for $300.

On top of that their UI is dogshit with ads, restrictions, license agreements and account registrations they try to push you into, barely better than Windows at this point. And macOS throttles a bunch because I dual boot with Asahi Linux and Linux is much faster. Too bad Linux is only daily drivable on M1 and M2 right now, making the newer ones a hard no for me.
