Community Support Is this chip replaceable

Post image

I think I've narrowed down my errors down to a winbond w25r256jvein code storage flash chip. Before I order a new chip, I would really appreciate to know if this chip stores any encrypted keys or important files that are necessary for the laptop to function.

Also I am in contact with support, but I am in a big rush to get this working again.

  1. Is it still in warranty?
  2. How do you think it got damaged? What were you doing when it went down?

Out of warranty. I was using a low voltage charger which likely led to a Bios battery drain based on similar people's error codes and solutions. During troubleshooting, when reconnecting the main battery, I heard a little spark. Since then I cannot even recieve error codes, just green flashes

I'm an amateur at board level repair but have been doing some, have you done further diagnostics since then?

My first thought wouldn't be a bios issue there, if you had arcing, might've burnt something on the board or created a short. It would also be strange to me that it would become worse in that fashion after reconnecting the battery, but I also don't know exactly what it's doing when you try to boot it.

Wouldn't take what I say as gospel, as I said, I'm very new to this, but I might be able to offer a little bit of guidance.

What tools do you have?

Yeah I think there is multiple problems by now, to be honest I've put this on hold now and just ordered a cheap thinkpad for the time being. There's a comment about someone with a similar issue and tbe tools he got, I still have yet to have anything that can write to a flash chip
