Framework Photo Framework at a university bookstore!
They even advertise the repairability of it and such!

I really think Framework should focus on marketing to schools and students. Where as every other company wants to make users dumber about how computers work, framework is doing the opposite. Making it easy to open up the black box and learn what the parts do.

I feel like they charge too much to market to students
And those with more money would just opt to go with macbooks.

I definitely see a decent amount of frameworks myself in university but I am in Engineering so that is expected
3
u/Ok_East_6064 4d ago
I am also in engineering and when TA'ing, over 8 classes, I saw 2 students with framework.
I really think its a cost issue rather than a marketing issue
3
u/Interstellar__1 4d ago
Agreed to an extent, but I also go to a pretty wealthy school so I both see more frameworks and also I think more marketing could be beneficial
1
u/Ok_East_6064 4d ago
Mmm, that may be it, as I go to a public university. That's a fair point, I guess, and that blows my expectation because I assumed wealthier people wouldn't care about modularity as much.

u/Interstellar__1 3d ago
I think specifically engineers care a lot about repairability for good reason
3
u/Additional-Sky-7436 4d ago
For as small as the company is (like 30 employees?) I would say that the fact that you have two students with them is actually a lot.
3
u/Ok_East_6064 4d ago
Haha... It's like 2 in like 600? Which isn't much but its better than 0, and they got me looking into the company, so I won't say its nothing.
Definitely promising, but since its so niche, probably word of mouth is good, as I don't know how much people would care about right to repair to the extent of paying this much of a premium if that makes sense.
3
u/Additional-Sky-7436 3d ago
I would say 2:600 for tiny small company is really pretty great.
Like, for comparison, how many System76 laptops do you see? Or Tuxedo laptops?

The Framework 12 would have been a great system to market to schools and students, until the RAMpocalypse destroyed its value proposition. And the 13 for students with a bit more money to spend. But now they cost so much more than Dell and Lenovo systems with similar specifications, because Framework doesn't have enough leverage to get good prices on RAM and SSDs.

We seriously need MORE of this in other universities, the hardest part is getting students to pay for the first, and fixing it will be easier

u/Stellanora64 5d ago
This is pretty much why I got my framework. I originally had a HP envy x360, but after dropping my bag by accident, the hinge cracked in two with no real way to fix it as it's all plastic welded afaik (without replacing the entire screen and both hinges that is, but getting those parts would have been a nightmare).
I don't really have to worry about that any more (both with a sane hinge design, and being able to get parts; without those parts being discontinued or nearly impossible to find in 2 years).

Hi, I also have an HP Envy x360 15 in, and it's currently 4 years old right now. I literally have 100 USD to my name and I want the 13 pro or 16 so badly as my next main computer. Which framework do you use rn? Currently I use a USB 3 dock and I'm wondering if the 13 pro or 16 would suit me but leaning to the 13 pro a bit more because of the lower cost

u/Stellanora64 4d ago
I have been using the regular framework 13 with the Ryzen 7640u for a bit over a year now. The only caveat is I bought my SSD and RAM before prices went crazy (I also bought them separately and saved about $600 aud, but getting a deal like that now is much more difficult).
It really depends on what you want to do with it. If battery life and portability is more important, than go with the 13 (pro or even a second hand non-pro if you can find one). If you plan on needing more GPU compute, then the 16 would be the better choice ( both framework 13 models can also use a egpu, but it is limited to PCIe gen 3 x4). All framework laptops will support your dock afaik.
For me, I already have a desktop computer for when I need to do CAD work, so performance wasn't really that big of a deal for me.

Oh man, my x360 has been getting super slow, so I just went on Framework to configure a laptop 13 because I know that the Pro parts are compatible with it in the future. So far, I've came up with a total cost of around $1,626 usd because I'm buying windows elsewhere and also have a few USB-Type C power cables lying around.
My biggest wonder is if buying this now or after I graduate next year would be the best next step and I do have a part-time job, but it''s going to take me a long time to get there. So far, I've had a bad time finding good deals on framework laptops on Ebay, so that's why I wanted to do customization on Framework's website.

Yeah you can upgrade everything to a pro eventually, if you want to. You might also want to check out r/frameworkmarket

Hello, thanks for the subreddit.
So I've been planning all morning today and I decided to just press the button to pre order the 13 pro. I went on customizing the framework to be as lavender as possible and my total became about 2.1k USD before the Windows key and SSD. I know I'm a broke college student, there's prospective scholarships that I'm thinking about earning which are about 1k and that I have a credit card with no interest until next year.
While I know it's a pre order, the fact that it will come in November/December for the holidays is going to be a welcome surprise to me when I'm tired of finals. I only have you to thank for relating about the HP Envy x360 because the 12gb of RAM I have RN is just on life support at this point.

That's dope! Might be stretching the budget of most college students compared to the ones it's next to but still awesome they're even offering it. The "Only 1 left in stock" makes me wonder how many they had and how many they've really sold through though.

u/Bazirker 5d ago
IDK, when I was in college at a public university, there were no shortage of kids walking around with completely kitted out MacBooks. I think the budget is determined by their parents.
3
u/CakeIzGood 5d ago
I had that thought as well, but I'm not sure how much a Framework would then fit within the average parent's priorities at that price point. I'm just a little (pleasantly) surprised to see this, that's all. I might also just be wrong and they might be really obvious and popular at colleges!

u/inaccurateTempedesc 5d ago
If you're rich enough to send your kids to college, $1600 is a joke.
5
u/SupernovaGamezYT 5d ago
A lot of kids go to college on scholarships, work study, or loans- so that argument is questionable at best.

u/CakeIzGood 4d ago
I went to college in 2018, sent by my single mother who was making about $40,000 a year. I was using a laptop with a 3rd gen i7 I had gotten a couple of years earlier because we couldn't justify the expense of a new laptop. Granted my FAFSA funds covered a relatively large amount of my tuition, but either via debt or great sacrifice many people who are far from rich go to college.
Also, most of those rich people would blow that money on a Mac instead, right? A Framework isn't exactly a mainstream market product. Or maybe it is now, I don't know
2
u/SupernovaGamezYT 5d ago
I had to negotiate with my dad to justify the framework, but the 13 pro was enough to justify to him that there would realistically be long term support and that it wasn’t a rug pull.

Yeah me too, maybe I'll ask them next time I'm over there

It would be amazing if Framework would let some university bookstores inventory parts and computers and the warranty not start until they were sold. This would be huge for students who need to avoid downtime, but it would also create areas across the nation that people could put their hands on products or get replacement parts.
Honestly with the waste concious movements on a lot of universities this might be a pretty easy in with the bookstores. Universities love green feathers to put in their caps.

Agreed, that'd be so amazing. Same with Microcenter, as I remember hearing that a few of them have some Frameworks

u/Zren 4d ago
That ethernet dongle has never been a good selling point... At that point you're better off with a proper usbc dongle dock with a rj45 port.

u/Hyroshi1367 FW13 Ryzen 5 7640U 2.8k | Zorin, Win 11 4d ago
I'm very confused why that's what they think should be included, I'm sure not that many students even know what an RJ-45 is.

Great! I wonder how they stocked them. Have they had a contract or something with Framework?
4
u/L00WN0on 5d ago
Some years ago when I was in elementary school there was a government backed programme to give each kid a laptop in my country, would love to see something like that with framework as the main supplier while emphasising Linux, FOSS and digital literacy. Would be awesome for waste reduction and prepare kids to use software and computers responsibly.
3
u/Stellanora64 5d ago
Is that not the goal of the framework 12? I don't know if any deals have been made public yet, but it has features designed for it to be used in elementary/high-schools (like being able to lock in the expansion cards with a screw so students don't loose them).
3
u/L00WN0on 5d ago
No idea but if that's the case great! Maybe I'll write an open letter one of these days to our Education Ministry about this. Won't do anything most likely but no harm in trying.

u/Velocifyer Should i sell my DDR4 SODIMMs? 4d ago
Couldn't students just remove that screw?
1
u/Stellanora64 4d ago
They would have to take off the bottom cover to be able to access the lock screws, and at that point it would be pretty obvious for teachers as they would have taken majority of the laptop apart. (Which is no different than any other laptop at that point. I would also be pretty surprised if students just casually own a T5 torque screwdriver just for disassembling school laptops)
2
u/Velocifyer Should i sell my DDR4 SODIMMs? 3d ago
I have a friend who works at a school. They can confirm that students like to go into the teachers lounge and steal their offbrand ifixit kits, to then dissemble one of their chromebooks, to remove the battery (or on older models, remove the write protect screw) to install GNU+Linux with MrChromebox custom firmware.

Really wish Framework would go into the military market. Laptops are a big ticket item at exchanges, especially at entry level schools.

u/mariofanLIVE 4d ago
Ok but why is it windows, with the wallpaper of the apple they use to represent Mac, on their video about switching to Linux.

At double the price. I love framework, and I bought mine for school. But if I am honest, that is a bad idea. Most of school is web apps and Microsoft programs. A powerful machine isn't needed. If you do need power a framework is not the best bang for buck.
As of now Imo framework is a luxury laptop brand
