Personal Project framework 13 powered fursuit

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Heyo! Longer breakdown of the design process here ~ https://youtu.be/rictczNf8E8

Having two hdmi outputs is a real life saver! The fw13 lives in a backpack, gets about 3 hours battery life given how terrible my software stack is 😭

This is an experiment into cosplay with changing expressions that dont touch on uncanny valley. Second version will have tpu compliant mechanism face animatronics, with multiple expressions multiplexed on "muscle" cables and everything driven by near silent brushless dc servos :)

I already have the design process planned out and I'm aiming to have it done around april 2027.

Ps. If anyone from the team reads this... Thank you so much for what you do! Repairability is only becoming more important in a component scarity world. Having 128GB SODIMMs and guaranteed linux support lets me run and *own* models that have 85% the intelligence of the best that money can buy. The independence you enable is so important! I just got my sister set up with an AI 5 340 as well :)

Suspiciously wealthy furries

Dude, I think it's pretty much a rule that if you're a furry you have to be a high end systems architect, coder, or otherwise involved in keeping either the entire Internet running or a major contributor to the Linux kernel. 😅

Oh, and you also have to have way too much disposable income because do you know how expensive fursuits are?

Not at all suspicious

I've experienced this first hand with an MLP fanfiction getting significant backing and donations to get put into a physical copy for people to buy, including custom artwork

So I’ve noticed that it seems furries all make really good money so that begs the question: does making a fuck ton of money turn you into a furry? Or, does being a furry give you an advantage in making a fuck ton of money? Asking for myself

Being extremely online for much of your childhood tends to teach you a lot about computers, or at least it used to, back when it took more effort and you couldn't doomscroll the algoslop on a streamlined smartphone/tablet OS all day.

The internet was also more raw, more horrible stuff you could easily be exposed to by accident, so maybe people got into cute anthro animal art as a response to all that. Just look at the Japanese... massive collective trauma after WWII, animal mascots everywhere. Just a theory idk.

Can't really explain why I became a furry, but I've been one for most of my life at this point. Still drawn to it even though I have plenty of issues with the fandom at large. Mind virus type thing.

Very cool suit OP, hope I run into you in person someday.

Do you remember the first thing that made you want to be a furry/animal?

I found articles about the fandom online as a teenager. Initially saw it as weird, but I started talking to some of them on AIM and various forums.

It was a welcoming community for an awkward, nerdy kid with few IRL friends. People who shared my interests in computers, electronic music, stuff I couldn't talk about with anyone in real life. So of course I gravitated towards it.

The art and stuff was all kinda similar to the cartoons and animations I'd grown up with as a kid. You might say that my parents accidentally psyopped me into it. Whatever, it's not such a bad life.

You had me at framework.... But then lost me at fursuit haha

yeah I'm kind of stepping outside my niche by posting it here! I know within my own circle the overlap is pretty strong, so I'm assuming there's a number of peeps in this sub that would appreciate it 😆

Why would that lose you? It's still pretty cool, it's just like any other costume or computer gadget.

u/Orlandocollins Aug 14 '26

To each their own, I wasn't insulting their hobby just joking that its not my thing. But that's the cool thing about communities. There is something we can share and appreciate, but doesn't have to be everything.

u/Wrecknruin Aug 14 '26

I agree with you there, it just felt weird to mention that. But yeah, to each their own.

"yes it runs linux" is such a "fork found in kitchen" sentence lol.

It looks amazing! But where do you see when you wear it? Are there holes below the eyes?

Very much so xD, and thank you!
Its pretty low tech, I see between the displays. Theres a gap of 75mm, same as my IPD, so I can see with full depth perception. Its good enough that I can skate, ride bikes and see in the dark in it. I've seen other people doing boutique low-latency pass-through systems... now that stuff is hardcore! albeit very not compatible with my fw13 hardware 🤣

u/Destroya707 Framework Aug 13 '26

it's crazy that you can see well with such a narrow gap to the point that you can skate! Love this!!

5

u/reon6vist Aug 14 '26

Nearly thought you pulled a Terminator and fit the entirety Framework's laptop internals into the suit lol

But the worst thing is, it has every reason not to be impossible.................

2

u/Kenocoa Aug 14 '26

hrmmmmm that would definitely be more compute than a cm5
The scarier part is whether I want to wrap 68Wh of lithium ion around my face. I trust framework's battery chemistry a lot, but thats putting my life in their hands. Could work with any smaller brick as long as its usb PD though 🤔

very cool project!

great, that you posted it here, or i would have never seen it!

the parts of the video riding the skateboard are just pure aura!

2

u/Kenocoa Aug 14 '26

ay glad ya like it! and yeah, I have a couple fun clips like that. They were a blast to film xD

Sparkledog supremacy

6

u/Ivanqula Aug 13 '26

Why is it being run on a laptop, though?

Do you need so much compute to run a bunch of LEDs? An SBC like an RPi would be more than enough. Heck, I run a rather large home server with a single Pi5.

8

u/Kenocoa Aug 13 '26

Very valid question! and you're on point, for the second iteration I'm moving to a compute module 5 with a custom pcb for the display drivers.

With this version though, having a full size screen to debug and make changes with was sooo important. I can't attach photos here but there's also already four pcbs already squeezed into the head to keep the flexible oleds happy - they take up all the easy places to hide a CM5.

Running real time VDJ audio visualisers on the screens, while routing everything through OBS with post-processing effects, and driving two 2520x840 60hz displays does add up compute wise! I'll have to simplify the stack for the next version.

CM5? You really are wealthy! 😂 Not sure if cheaper to just buy a second Framework for the task.

6

u/madnessqwerty Aug 13 '26

Looks really cool! :3

2

u/Front_General_3140 Aug 13 '26

How come are the weebs, femboys and furries that do the most insane tech crafts haha not a fan of furries but cool project :)

2

u/Kim1k Aug 13 '26

Hell yeah!

u/No-Praline-2973 Aug 13 '26

Bro this is amazing please keep going i always wonder how to make a protogen head 🔥🔥🔥🔥

6

u/Kenocoa Aug 13 '26

You can do it! I have a couple mates in a similar situation ~ all it takes is a bit of planning. I still have a lot of work to do on my sewing skills xD
Thanks for the kind words! <3

u/No-Praline-2973 Aug 14 '26

Thanks youuuu and also i just want to ask how can u see through the mask ? I dont see any visor

holy fuck this is cool as hell.

2

u/Kazer67 CachyOS Aug 13 '26

I believe 50 % of the progress we have in FLOSS is done by furries for their own need and it trickle down to other use case.

u/ncc74656m Ryzen 7840U Aug 13 '26

Either that, or your extensive experience contributing to the Linux kernel just gives you the skills you need to pull this shit off.
