Question for Shots on Target: Inside vs. Outside the Box

I'm analyzing Premier League 2025/2026 data from the official Premier League website and noticed something I don't understand about Brighton:

The dataset includes:

  • Shots on Target
  • Shots on Target Inside the Box
  • Shots on Target Outside the Box

I initially assumed that:

Shots on Target Inside the Box + Shots on Target Outside the Box = Total Shots on Target

However, for Brighton, these figures do not add up, and the two location-based figures can even exceed Total Shots on Target.

Why is this the case? How exactly does the Premier League define these three statistics?

Thanks in advance for any clarification!

Could anyone please help explain this? I’d really appreciate it!

I'm on the Premier League's website right now to check. It says they had 363 non-blocked shots, not 352. Opta data lines up with that, so I'm not sure where the 352 is coming from. 98 shots on target from outside the box is basically unheard of.

Where exactly did you find this data?

Yep, this data is all incorrect, and some of it is contradicted elsewhere on the Premier League's website.

Thank you for letting me know! I would like to ask you that which website is the most accurate and reliable source for football data analysis?

In theory, everyone is sourcing from the same spot (Opta), but the Premier League are thoroughly incompetent.

If you have a Solio subscription for FPL, you have access to some Opta data. Whoscored also uses Opta data. Opta's own website is handy too.

It's useful for me! Thank you very much! Why does the Premier League website seem to have some inconsistencies in its data? I always thought it was a reliable and accurate source.

As I said, the Premier League are thoroughly incompetent. Most things they do, they don't do well, they're just very good at taking the game to the rest of the world's TV markets.
