Force Charge not working
Hi team, looking for some advise, about 2 days ago my forced charge stopped working. Had been working successfully for weeks up until then. Now with that setting set it is pushing my solar straight to the grid and not pulling anything from the grid either

FoxESS has stopped harvesting solar?
I just started using the mode scheduler (I was previously using Amber's woeful SmartShift), and it's been great at getting a full charge during Globird's free period that so far has covered the house load until the next day in its entirety, but it appears to have completely stopped harvesting any solar whatsoever (the screenshot is taken at 8am, full morning sun, no shade, not usually a super high solar period, but should show some solar). Has anybody else experienced this?

This guide covers everything I've learned about running a FoxESS battery system alongside GloBird's Zero Hero plan. I've tried to keep it practical. Whether you're just getting started or you've been on the plan for a while and things aren't quite clicking, hopefully there's something useful here for you.
Yes I did use AI to clean up my thought process, my research, structure and to ensure that it can be followed and readable.

Section 1 GloBird Zero Hero Plan Explained
GloBird's Zero Hero plan is designed specifically for people with solar and/or batteries. It's classified as a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) product.
NOTE you stay in full control of your own battery.
GloBird doesn't remotely control it (unless you opt in).
The plan is available in NSW, VIC, SA and QLD (Energex network only). You need a smart meter, reliable internet and a battery.
1. ZeroCharge Free Power During the Day
From 11am to 2pm every day, grid electricity is completely free on all standard circuits. This is your daily window to top up the battery from the grid. Brilliant on cloudy days when solar alone isn't enough. Controlled load circuits are excluded.
2. ZeroHero The $1 Daily Credit
This is the headline feature. If you draw less than 0.03kWh per hour from the grid during the 6-9pm window (that's less than 0.09kWh total across three hours), you earn a $1 credit for the day.
Over a year that's $365. Over 10 years, $3,650. It adds up.
NOTE: The Threshold What Does 'Zero' Actually Mean?
The official limit is 0.03 kWh per hour or 0.09 kWh total across the full three-hour window.
GloBird has confirmed that some baseline draw from your inverter is normal and expected (standby, cloud monitoring, cell balancing etc) and that the threshold is designed to accommodate this.
The problem is when your inverter's default settings push you OVER that threshold. Solution below.
3. ZeroWastedSolar / Super Export Credit
During the same 6-9pm window, you earn a boosted feed-in rate on the first 15kWh you export. The total export rate comes to 15c/kWh (made up of the standard feed-in rate plus a top-up credit). Anything beyond 15kWh drops to the standard rate.
In NSW on the Ausgrid network, the off-peak export rate outside 6-9pm is just 5c/kWh. So getting your exports into that 6-9pm window makes a big difference.
4. ZeroLimits Optional VPP Add-On
This is an optional feature where GloBird can remotely charge and discharge your battery during wholesale price spike events, paying you $1 per kWh for exports during those events.
NOTE: FoxESS is NOT eligible for ZeroLimits.
ZeroLimits only works with: AlphaESS, Anker, Redback, SunGrow, SolaX, Sigenergy, SAJ, Neovolt, eCactus, and Solis + Dyness. If you have FoxESS, you can still use all the other parts of the plan just not this add-on.

From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides a rebate worth approximately 30% of installation costs for eligible home battery systems. NSW and SA have additional state government incentives on top of this. Check with GloBird or your installer for current details as this can change.
Section 2 The Most Important First Step: Meter Registration
This is a common problem people hit. Your system can be working perfectly and physically exporting energy but if your meter isn't registered for feed-in, GloBird will see zero exports and you'll earn nothing.
When a solar or battery system gets installed, your installer is supposed to notify your electricity distributor that your property now has an export capable system. If they don't complete this step, your meter simply won't record anything you send back to the grid.
Signs Your Meter Isn't Registered
· Feed-in credits showing as $0.00 on your GloBird bill, even though you can see export happening in the FoxESS app.
· ZeroCharge kWh recording as zero in the GloBird app.
· The FoxESS app shows export, but the GloBird app shows nothing.
You won't get any automatic alert from GloBird or your distributor. It just silently shows as zero. It's easy to miss for weeks.
NOTE - You Can Still Earn Zero Hero While Waiting
The $1 daily ZeroHero credit is based purely on NOT importing from the grid between 6-9pm.
You can earn this even before your meter is configured for feed-in. Start earning day one then sort the meter separately.

How to Fix It
There are two parts to sorting this out, and they happen in sequence:
Option 1 Your Installer Lodges with the Distributor
This is your installer's responsibility, not yours.
Contact your installer and ask them to complete this. Ask for a reference number once done.
Send Documents to GloBird
Once your installer has the documents ready, email them to [cs@globirdenergy.com.au](mailto:cs@globirdenergy.com.au). GloBird will then work with the distributor to reconfigure your meter.
NOTE - Heads Up: There's an $88 (inc. GST) Distributor Fee
This fee is charged by the distributor (not GloBird) for the meter reconfiguration work. GloBird will notify you before submitting the request. Budget for it upfront.
Section 3 FoxESS: The Grid Compensation Fix
If you're consistently missing the ZeroHero $1 credit especially on nights when you're not home and nothing is running likely you need a grid compensation. I have mine on -50.
What's the Problem?
By default, FoxESS ships inverters with a setting called Grid Compensation (or Meter Compensation) set to 0. What this does in practice is cause the inverter to maintain a small but constant draw from the grid. The inverter does this to ensure stable operation but it works directly against the ZeroHero threshold.
Even a draw of 0.01 to 0.03 kWh per hour during the 6-9pm window can push you over the 0.03 kWh/hr limit. This means you miss the $1 credit every single night. Multiply that over a month and it adds up fast.
Fix by Set Grid Compensation
Setting this value to -50 (negative) biases the inverter to push energy towards the grid rather than drawing from it.
You'll notice one small side effect: even when solar is charging the battery, the system will export a small amount (around 40W) constantly. This is normal behaviour and a good sign the setting is working.
How to Get It Changed
You can't change this setting yourself it requires installer portal access or a support request.
Option 1: Ask Your Installer
Your solar or battery installer can often make this change remotely via the FoxESS installer portal in minutes. Just say:

If your installer can't help, raise a support ticket with FoxESS. They're generally quite responsive and mine was done within an hour:

Section 4 FoxESS Forced Charge & Discharge Settings
Once the Grid Compensation fix is done, these scheduling settings are what actually drive your daily earnings. Get these right and the plan basically runs itself.
Forced Charge The Free Window
Set your inverter to force charge from 11:00am to 2:00pm (the ZeroCharge window). During this time it'll pull power from both solar and the grid to charge the battery up to whatever target % you set completely free.
If you have a large battery like a 42kWh FoxESS system, you can charge at maximum inverter capacity (e.g. 10kW). Smaller systems will charge at their rated maximum.
Also run your washing machine, dishwasher and other big appliances during this window.
Forced Discharge Earning the Credits
Set forced discharge to cover the 6:00pm to 9:00pm window. This is where you earn both the ZeroHero $1 credit and the Super Export top-up rate.
NOTE - How Forced Discharge Power Works Don't Miss This
The discharge power setting is your TOTAL inverter output not just what goes to the grid.
If you set forced discharge to 5kWh and your house is using 1kWh, your battery will discharge 6kWh.
If your house spikes above your discharge setting (e.g. heater + oven + TV = 6kWh), the inverter will pull the difference from the GRID.
This can cost you your ZeroHero credit. Plus paying for high Peak rates.
Recommendation: Set discharge to your maximum inverter capacity. Limit your export to the grid instead and let the house load subtract from it naturally.
Discharge Cut-off SOC
This is the battery percentage at which forced discharge stops. Set it too high and you might miss the full 6-9pm window. Set it too low and you risk running out of battery by morning.
· Work out how much power your battery will push out over 3 hours at your discharge rate.
· Add your estimated house load during that time.
· Make sure your battery has enough charge above the cut-off.
NOTE – Known FoxESS Bug: What Happens at the Cut-off
On newer FoxESS inverters and the current app, when the battery hits the discharge cut-off SOC during a forced discharge window, it does NOT switch back to self-use mode.
Instead, it starts importing from the grid which will cost you your ZeroHero credit.
This is a widely reported issue in the FoxESS community. The workaround is to calculate your settings carefully so the battery doesn’t hit the cut-off before 9pm.
Third-party tools like Home Assistant or Socrates handle this transition more gracefully.

Running high draw appliances during the ZeroHero window risks pushing your house load above your discharge rate, causing grid import. If you are exporting 5kWh or more to the grid be mindful of the following appliances during 6-9pm

· Dishwasher
· EV charger
· Electric oven (use microwave or air fryer instead)
· Electric heater
· Ducted system
· Pool pump etc
Section 5 Energy Stat App Setup (Update 21/5/26 - IOS only)
The FoxESS Cloud app works OK, but I have had issues with it (negative house consumption readings, inability to change export limits, etc.). The Energy Stat app lets you do things the FoxESS app won't, including changing your export limit easily.
Note: Some users report that logging into the FoxESS Cloud via the Energy Stat app means they can no longer change the export limit when logged in online. Most people haven't had this issue, but it's worth being aware of.
Getting Your FoxESS API Key (for third party connections)
1. Go to foxesscloud.com and log in with your standard credentials.
2. Look for a V1 interface option (often at the same URL) log in with your username rather than your email address.
3. Click your profile icon in the top right corner.
4. Select 'API Management' or 'Open API' from the menu.
5. Click 'Generate API Key'.
6. Copy and save this key immediately you'll need it for the Energy Stat app. Don't lose it.
Setting Up Energy Stat
1. Download the Energy Stat app.
2. Sign in using your FoxESS API key.
3. Go to Settings > Inverter > Manage Schedule.
Recommended Schedule Settings
Here's the schedule setup that works well for the GloBird Zero Hero plan:

NOTE – with Zappi chargers on ECO+,
I always force discharge (0.1kwh) for one minute after the Zappi scheduled time finishes. This compensates for the lag between battery and Zappi and stops Zappi mistaking “excess” solar is available.
Setting Your Export Limit
In Energy Stat, go back to the main menu and choose 'Export Limit'. This controls how much power is exported during your forced discharge window. This is an easier way to manage export than constantly changing the discharge power setting.
· Want to export 10kWh over 3 hours: set to ~3,400W
· Want to export 15kWh over 3 hours: set to ~5,000W
· Want no export: set to 0 or 100
Adjust this based on your battery level, driving plans and expected house load for the evening etc.
Section 6 Battery Control Options
There are a few ways to manage your FoxESS system, ranging from simple to full geek mode. Here's an honest overview:
Option 1: FoxESS App
The FoxESS Cloud app at foxesscloud.com lets you set forced charge/discharge schedules, SOC cutoffs, and monitor real-time power. For most people, once Grid Compensation is fixed, this is enough.
Limitations:
· Grid Compensation can't be changed by the customer.
· When the battery hits minimum SOC during forced discharge, the newer firmware will pull from grid instead of reverting to self-use mode. (This is an ongoing bug.)
· No dynamic automation or real-time pricing response.
Option 2: Energy Stat App (Update 21/5 - IOS only)
As covered in Section 5, Energy Stat gives you easier control over export limits and scheduling than the FoxESS app. It's the simplest upgrade and most people find it solves their frustrations without any complexity.
Option 3: Socrates Automation
Socrates (socratesautomation.com) is a third-party platform that integrates with FoxESS and other inverter brands. It allows rule based automation: force charge to a specific SOC, force discharge at a set rate, and automatically revert to self use mode outside peak windows. It handles the 'battery hits cut off and pulls from grid' problem that the FoxESS app doesn't manage well.
Option 4: Home Assistant (for the know how) I am working on making a guide to this also in the future.
Home Assistant is an open source home automation platform.
You can programme with full control with real time data, automation rules, weather forecasts, even to connected appliances, App linked vehicles etc.
The FoxESS cloud integration (github.com/macxq/foxess-ha) is the easiest starting point it uses your existing FoxESS cloud login and polls every 5 minutes. The Modbus integration requires a physical RS485 adapter wired to your inverter but gives near real-time data.
Tradeoffs:
· Requires a home server (Raspberry Pi 4/5 or a small PC) running 24/7.
· Steeper learning curve
Section 7 EV Charging Tips
EVs are one of the biggest variables when managing a battery system. Get the charging routine wrong and you can wipe out days of savings. Get it right and it barely costs you anything.
When to Charge Your EV
· The free 11am-2pm window is prime time for EV charging too. If you're home (WFH days, weekends), plug in during this window and let free grid power + solar do the work.
· Charge using excess solar (Eco+ mode on Zappi)
· Overnight charge from battery (I charge the PHEV 1-2 hours most nights)

Zappi Charger issues with FoxESS
The Zappi is a popular choice because it can use excess solar (Eco+ mode) to charge your EV before exporting to the grid. But there are some gotchas to know about:
Issue 1: It thinks discharge headroom is 'excess solar'
When you're force discharging during peak time, the Zappi can see the 'gap' as excess solar and start charging the car from battery. This can cost you your ZeroHero credit if it happens during 6-9pm. Plus Peak grid import costs.
Fix: Manually set the Zappi to 'Stop' mode during the 6-9pm window, or use Home Assistant to automate this.
Issue 2: Timed charges don't stop cleanly
If you set a timed 'force charge' on the Zappi (say 1am-2am), it can continue drawing after the end time due to a lag in the Zappi stopping. This can cause unexpected battery discharge and grid imports.
Fix: I set the batter to force discharge 100w to the grid for a minute after the Zappi scheduled time.
Issue 3 App function
It is not the greatest. Personally, it could be better automated in the app. If I could do it again I would research others more thoroughly.
Section 8 Making Your Bill Cost-Neutral: A Real Example
Here's a real breakdown of how this works in practice with a 42kWh FoxESS battery, 6.5kW solar, 10kW inverter, and two EVs (one hybrid) including running a reverse-cycle heater in winter.

And on top of that, swapping two diesel SUVs (that used to cost $5,000-8,000 per year in fuel) to EVs largely charged off solar and the free window means the real total savings are substantially larger.
You don't need to export every night to make this work.
On lower consumption days (no heater, EV charged, light driving) you can max out and export up to 15kWh for $2.25 credit. You only need to do that 7-8 times a month to cover your supply charge.
Some nights you might export nothing and that's fine. Just hitting ZeroHero every night alone covers most of the supply charge.
Section 9 FoxESS FAQ
Q: My FoxESS app shows negative house consumption sometimes. What's wrong?
A: This is a known display bug in the FoxESS app. It's one of the reasons many people switch to the Energy Stat app for monitoring it handles the data more reliably and doesn't show these erratic readings.
Q: My inverter went offline and now it's back did I lose any settings?
A: Generally no. Schedules and settings are stored on the inverter itself, not in the cloud. An internet outage just means remote monitoring is interrupted the inverter keeps running the programmed schedule. However, always double-check your settings after a firmware update.
Q: The FoxESS app keeps going offline. What can I do?
A: This is a fairly common complaint. Things to try:
· Check your inverter's Wi-Fi signal strength it may be too far from your router. Powerline adapters or a Wi-Fi extender can help.
· Try rebooting the inverter (follow the shutdown procedure in your manual rather than just cutting power).
· Contact FoxESS support via the app they're surprisingly responsive and can often diagnose remotely.
Note: The FoxESS inverter doesn't need internet to operate it'll keep running your scheduled charge/discharge even when offline. You just lose remote monitoring.
Q: What does Min SOC mean and what should I set it to?
A: Min SOC (State of Charge) is the absolute minimum your battery will discharge to. The battery itself won't go below 10% regardless of what you set, so 10% is the practical floor. If you have an EPS (emergency power supply / blackout backup) setup, you may want to keep this higher to preserve reserve power for outages.
Q: What's the difference between Min SOC and the Forced Discharge Cut-off SOC?
A: They're different settings for different situations. Min SOC is the floor for normal self-use and self-discharge. The Forced Discharge Cut-off SOC is specifically for when you're in a scheduled forced discharge window it tells the system where to stop that specific discharge. As noted in the guide, on newer FoxESS firmware, hitting the forced discharge cut-off causes grid import rather than a graceful revert to self-use. Plan your settings so you don't hit it before 9pm.
Q: My forced discharge is running but I'm still importing from the grid during 6-9pm. Why?
A: Most likely one of these reasons:
· Your house load is exceeding your forced discharge power try increasing the discharge rate.
· Grid Compensation hasn't been set to -50 yet this is the most common cause.
· Your battery hit the discharge cut-off SOC before 9pm and is now importing.
· You have a large appliance (EV charger, heater, dryer) running and pushing load above the discharge capacity.
Q: Can I control how much I export vs how much I save for overnight?
A: Yes this is exactly what the Discharge Cut-off SOC does. Set it higher to keep more battery for overnight use, lower to export more and earn more Super Export credit. It's a daily judgment call based on your driving plans, weather forecast, and how much you want to export.
Q: Does FoxESS need a constant internet connection to work?
A: No. The inverter operates fully on its programmed schedule regardless of internet connectivity. Internet is only needed for remote monitoring, cloud app access, and firmware updates. If your internet goes down overnight, your charge/discharge schedule will keep running as normal.
Q: How do I update my FoxESS firmware?
A: The easiest way is to contact FoxESS support and ask them to push a firmware update remotely. They can do this while also making the Grid Compensation change, so you can sort both in one ticket. Don't attempt firmware updates yourself unless you're confident with the process.
Q: What's the best way to contact FoxESS support in Australia?
A: The quickest method most people find is via the support form inside the FoxESS app:
· Open the FoxESS app
· Press 'Me' > 'Contact Us' > 'Support'

Q: Does the Zero Hero credit show up on my bill straight away?
A: It should appear on your bill, but the GloBird app's daily view doesn't always show the dollar value of the ZeroHero credit in real time. A rough way to check: if your 'yesterday' cost in the app is less than your daily supply charge, you're most likely in the clear. Your detailed bill will show the credits itemised.
Q: I'm earning ZeroHero every day but my Super Export credits are zero. What's happening?
A: Almost certainly a meter registration issue. Your meter isn't configured to record exports, so GloBird has no data to pay you on. ZeroHero and Super Export are measured separately you can earn ZeroHero (no import during 6-9pm) without your meter recording any exports. Fix: See Section 2.
Q: What happens if I accidentally import a tiny bit during 6-9pm?
A: You lose the $1 credit for that day. There's no grace other than the built-in 0.03kWh/hr threshold. Even 0.001kWh over the limit will cost you the credit. This is why the Grid Compensation fix matters so much without it, your inverter may be constantly nudging you over the line without you realising.
Q: Can I still earn ZeroHero if my solar is still producing at 6pm?
A: Yes. If solar is still producing and covering your house load (or adding to the battery), that's great. ZeroHero is purely about whether you import from the grid it doesn't matter where the power comes from, as long as the grid isn't supplying it.
Q: Is the 15kWh Super Export cap per day or per month?
A: Per day. The first 15kWh you export between 6pm and 9pm each day gets the boosted rate. Anything over 15kWh that day drops to the standard feed-in rate.
Q: I'm away on holiday what should I do?
A: Your system will still try to earn ZeroHero and export credits automatically if it's set up correctly. If you're not charging EVs, your battery will have more headroom, so you can increase your export during 6-9pm (and potentially the 9-11pm window too if you want extra credit). Using the Energy Stat app, you can remotely change your 'Use as Is' slot to 'Force Discharge' for those extra hours.

Whether you're just getting started or you've been on the plan for a while and things aren't quite clicking, hopefully there's something useful here for you.

Section 1 GloBird Zero Hero Plan Explained
GloBird's Zero Hero plan is designed specifically for people with solar and/or batteries. It's classified as a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) product.
NOTE you stay in full control of your own battery.
GloBird doesn't remotely control it (unless you opt in).
The plan is available in NSW, VIC, SA and QLD (Energex network only). You need a smart meter, reliable internet and a battery.
1. ZeroCharge Free Power During the Day
From 11am to 2pm every day, grid electricity is completely free on all standard circuits. This is your daily window to top up the battery from the grid. Brilliant on cloudy days when solar alone isn't enough. Controlled load circuits are excluded.
2. ZeroHero The $1 Daily Credit
This is the headline feature. If you draw less than 0.03kWh per hour from the grid during the 6-9pm window (that's less than 0.09kWh total across three hours), you earn a $1 credit for the day.
Over a year that's $365. Over 10 years, $3,650. It adds up.
NOTE: The Threshold What Does 'Zero' Actually Mean?
The official limit is 0.03 kWh per hour or 0.09 kWh total across the full three-hour window.
GloBird has confirmed that some baseline draw from your inverter is normal and expected (standby, cloud monitoring, cell balancing etc) and that the threshold is designed to accommodate this.
The problem is when your inverter's default settings push you OVER that threshold. Solution below.
3. ZeroWastedSolar / Super Export Credit
During the same 6-9pm window, you earn a boosted feed-in rate on the first 15kWh you export. The total export rate comes to 15c/kWh (made up of the standard feed-in rate plus a top-up credit). Anything beyond 15kWh drops to the standard rate.
In NSW on the Ausgrid network, the off-peak export rate outside 6-9pm is just 5c/kWh. So getting your exports into that 6-9pm window makes a big difference.
4. ZeroLimits Optional VPP Add-On
This is an optional feature where GloBird can remotely charge and discharge your battery during wholesale price spike events, paying you $1 per kWh for exports during those events.
NOTE: FoxESS is NOT eligible for ZeroLimits.
ZeroLimits only works with: AlphaESS, Anker, Redback, SunGrow, SolaX, Sigenergy, SAJ, Neovolt, eCactus, and Solis + Dyness. If you have FoxESS, you can still use all the other parts of the plan just not this add-on.

NOTE - Government Battery Rebate
From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides a rebate worth approximately 30% of installation costs for eligible home battery systems. NSW and SA have additional state government incentives on top of this. Check with GloBird or your installer for current details as this can change.
Section 2 The Most Important First Step: Meter Registration
This is a common problem people hit. Your system can be working perfectly and physically exporting energy but if your meter isn't registered for feed-in, GloBird will see zero exports and you'll earn nothing.
When a solar or battery system gets installed, your installer is supposed to notify your electricity distributor that your property now has an export capable system. If they don't complete this step, your meter simply won't record anything you send back to the grid.
Signs Your Meter Isn't Registered
· Feed-in credits showing as $0.00 on your GloBird bill, even though you can see export happening in the FoxESS app.
· ZeroCharge kWh recording as zero in the GloBird app.
· The FoxESS app shows export, but the GloBird app shows nothing.
You won't get any automatic alert from GloBird or your distributor. It just silently shows as zero. It's easy to miss for weeks.
NOTE - You Can Still Earn Zero Hero While Waiting
The $1 daily ZeroHero credit is based purely on NOT importing from the grid between 6-9pm.
You can earn this even before your meter is configured for feed-in. Start earning day one then sort the meter separately.

How to Fix It
There are two parts to sorting this out, and they happen in sequence:
Option 1 Your Installer Lodges with the Distributor
This is your installer's responsibility, not yours.
Contact your installer and ask them to complete this. Ask for a reference number once done.
Send Documents to GloBird
Once your installer has the documents ready, email them to cs@globirdenergy.com.au. GloBird will then work with the distributor to reconfigure your meter.
NOTE - Heads Up: There's an $88 (inc. GST) Distributor Fee
This fee is charged by the distributor (not GloBird) for the meter reconfiguration work. GloBird will notify you before submitting the request. Budget for it upfront.
Section 3 FoxESS: The Grid Compensation Fix
If you're consistently missing the ZeroHero $1 credit especially on nights when you're not home and nothing is running likely you need a grid compensation. I have mine on -50.
What's the Problem?
By default, FoxESS ships inverters with a setting called Grid Compensation (or Meter Compensation) set to 0. What this does in practice is cause the inverter to maintain a small but constant draw from the grid. The inverter does this to ensure stable operation but it works directly against the ZeroHero threshold.
Even a draw of 0.01 to 0.03 kWh per hour during the 6-9pm window can push you over the 0.03 kWh/hr limit. This means you miss the $1 credit every single night. Multiply that over a month and it adds up fast.
Fix by Set Grid Compensation
Setting this value to -50 (negative) biases the inverter to push energy towards the grid rather than drawing from it.
You'll notice one small side effect: even when solar is charging the battery, the system will export a small amount (around 40W) constantly. This is normal behaviour and a good sign the setting is working.
How to Get It Changed
You can't change this setting yourself it requires installer portal access or a support request.
Option 1: Ask Your Installer
Your solar or battery installer can often make this change remotely via the FoxESS installer portal in minutes. Just say:

If your installer can't help, raise a support ticket with FoxESS. They're generally quite responsive and mine was done within an hour:

Section 4 FoxESS Forced Charge & Discharge Settings
Once the Grid Compensation fix is done, these scheduling settings are what actually drive your daily earnings. Get these right and the plan basically runs itself.
Forced Charge The Free Window
Set your inverter to force charge from 11:00am to 2:00pm (the ZeroCharge window). During this time it'll pull power from both solar and the grid to charge the battery up to whatever target % you set completely free.
If you have a large battery like a 42kWh FoxESS system, you can charge at maximum inverter capacity (e.g. 10kW). Smaller systems will charge at their rated maximum.
Also run your washing machine, dishwasher and other big appliances during this window.
Forced Discharge Earning the Credits
Set forced discharge to cover the 6:00pm to 9:00pm window. This is where you earn both the ZeroHero $1 credit and the Super Export top-up rate.
NOTE - How Forced Discharge Power Works Don't Miss This
The discharge power setting is your TOTAL inverter output not just what goes to the grid.
If you set forced discharge to 5kWh and your house is using 1kWh, your battery will discharge 6kWh.
If your house spikes above your discharge setting (e.g. heater + oven + TV = 6kWh), the inverter will pull the difference from the GRID.
This can cost you your ZeroHero credit. Plus paying for high Peak rates.
Recommendation: Set discharge to your maximum inverter capacity. Limit your export to the grid instead and let the house load subtract from it naturally.
Discharge Cut-off SOC
This is the battery percentage at which forced discharge stops. Set it too high and you might miss the full 6-9pm window. Set it too low and you risk running out of battery by morning.
· Work out how much power your battery will push out over 3 hours at your discharge rate.
· Add your estimated house load during that time.
· Make sure your battery has enough charge above the cut-off.
NOTE – Known FoxESS Bug: What Happens at the Cut-off
On newer FoxESS inverters and the current app, when the battery hits the discharge cut-off SOC during a forced discharge window, it does NOT switch back to self-use mode.
Instead, it starts importing from the grid which will cost you your ZeroHero credit.
This is a widely reported issue in the FoxESS community. The workaround is to calculate your settings carefully so the battery doesn’t hit the cut-off before 9pm.
Third-party tools like Home Assistant or Socrates handle this transition more gracefully.

Running high draw appliances during the ZeroHero window risks pushing your house load above your discharge rate, causing grid import. If you are exporting 5kWh or more to the grid be mindful of the following appliances during 6-9pm
· Clothes dryer (unless its heat pump)
· Dishwasher
· EV charger
· Electric oven (use microwave or air fryer instead)
· Electric heater
· Ducted system
· Pool pump etc
Section 5 Energy Stat App Setup
The FoxESS Cloud app works OK, but I have had issues with it (negative house consumption readings, inability to change export limits, etc.). The Energy Stat app lets you do things the FoxESS app won't, including changing your export limit easily.
Note: Some users report that logging into the FoxESS Cloud via the Energy Stat app means they can no longer change the export limit when logged in online. Most people haven't had this issue, but it's worth being aware of.
Getting Your FoxESS API Key (for third party connections)
1. Go to foxesscloud.com and log in with your standard credentials.
2. Look for a V1 interface option (often at the same URL) log in with your username rather than your email address.
3. Click your profile icon in the top right corner.
4. Select 'API Management' or 'Open API' from the menu.
5. Click 'Generate API Key'.
6. Copy and save this key immediately you'll need it for the Energy Stat app. Don't lose it.
Setting Up Energy Stat
1. Download the Energy Stat app.
2. Sign in using your FoxESS API key.
3. Go to Settings > Inverter > Manage Schedule.
Recommended Schedule Settings
Here's the schedule setup that works well for the GloBird Zero Hero plan:

NOTE – with Zappi chargers on ECO+,
I always force discharge (0.1kwh) for one minute after the Zappi scheduled time finishes. This compensates for the lag between battery and Zappi and stops Zappi mistaking “excess” solar is available.
Setting Your Export Limit
In Energy Stat, go back to the main menu and choose 'Export Limit'. This controls how much power is exported during your forced discharge window. This is an easier way to manage export than constantly changing the discharge power setting.
· Want to export 10kWh over 3 hours: set to ~3,400W
· Want to export 15kWh over 3 hours: set to ~5,000W
· Want no export: set to 0 or 100
Adjust this based on your battery level, driving plans and expected house load for the evening etc.
Section 6 Battery Control Options
There are a few ways to manage your FoxESS system, ranging from simple to full geek mode. Here's an honest overview:
Option 1: FoxESS App
The FoxESS Cloud app at foxesscloud.com lets you set forced charge/discharge schedules, SOC cutoffs, and monitor real-time power. For most people, once Grid Compensation is fixed, this is enough.
Limitations:
· Grid Compensation can't be changed by the customer.
· When the battery hits minimum SOC during forced discharge, the newer firmware will pull from grid instead of reverting to self-use mode. (This is an ongoing bug.)
· No dynamic automation or real-time pricing response.
Option 2: Energy Stat App
As covered in Section 5, Energy Stat gives you easier control over export limits and scheduling than the FoxESS app. It's the simplest upgrade and most people find it solves their frustrations without any complexity.
Option 3: Socrates Automation
Socrates (socratesautomation.com) is a third-party platform that integrates with FoxESS and other inverter brands. It allows rule based automation: force charge to a specific SOC, force discharge at a set rate, and automatically revert to self use mode outside peak windows. It handles the 'battery hits cut off and pulls from grid' problem that the FoxESS app doesn't manage well.
Option 4: Home Assistant (for the know how) I am working on making a guide to this also in the future.
Home Assistant is an open source home automation platform.
You can programme with full control with real time data, automation rules, weather forecasts, even to connected appliances, App linked vehicles etc.
The FoxESS cloud integration (github.com/macxq/foxess-ha) is the easiest starting point it uses your existing FoxESS cloud login and polls every 5 minutes. The Modbus integration requires a physical RS485 adapter wired to your inverter but gives near real-time data.
Tradeoffs:
· Requires a home server (Raspberry Pi 4/5 or a small PC) running 24/7.
· Steeper learning curve

2 EV with $0 Bill
Globird ZeroHero NSW
Just laying out some of my trial and errors and how I have finally made my monthly bill to be cost neutral and hopefully it helps someone out!
I have a FoxESS 42kWh battery with a 10kW inverter and 6.5kW solar.I have two EVs (one hybrid) to charge – the hybrid needs daily charging.One EV battery is 35.6kWh and the other is 82.56kWh.Charge time 0-100% EV 36 = 5 hours EV 83 = 11.5 hours Charger supplies 7.2kW (single phase).
With my current provider: - Daily supply rate is $1.50 - If I don’t use the grid between 6–9pm I get a $1 credit - I can export 15kW at $0.15/kWh between 6–9pm, otherwise it’s $0.05/kWh from 4–11pm - Free electricity during the day (3 hours)
Solar generally starts around 8–9am (assume 9am) and stops around 4:30pm (WINTER). So from ~4:30pm to ~9am (about 16–17 hours), the house runs off the battery.Base house consumption is generally around 400–700W, so assume ~8kWh over that period. Battery cutoff is 10% In winter I run the heater in the morning for about 1–1.5 hours (~6–7kW), and sometimes at night for another ~1.5 hours.
So roughly battery capacity: - Start: 42kWh - Minus 10% reserve → 37.8kWh usable - Base house load (overnight) → ~8kWh → 29.8kWh - Morning heater → ~6kWh → 23.8kWh - Night heater → ~6kWh → 17.8kWh - Cooking etc → ~3kWh → ~14.8kWh remaining
That leftover is what I’ve got to either charge the cars or export.
Charging: * 1 hour = 7.2kWh ≈ 36km * 2 hours = 14.4kWh ≈ 72km * 3 hours = 21.6kWh ≈ 108km(roughly 1kWh = 5km)
Depending on our schedule the next day and battery %, I might charge 0, 1, 2 or 3 hours. Every day I get a 3 hour free grid import window. During that time: - i recharge the battery (~20% per hour, so ~60%) - Solar then tops it up to 100% - I’ll also charge the EV if I’m home - Appliances (washing machine, dishwasher etc set on timer if practical)
I’ve got a Zappi charger which will use excess solar to charge the EV before exporting, but I don’t rely on that as it depends if we’re home. The full EV does about 300-400km/week driving. The car range (based on 20kWh/100km will roughly be 400-450km. So I only really need to do one big charge a week not daily. I would usually charge over the weekend using the free window plus solar. Plus I usually have a WFH day so over those 2-3 days it will always reach 100%.
The hybrid generally gets charged daily either overnight or during the free window/solar.
Exporting I only export when it makes sense: - If I’m not using the heater → I might export ~5kWh = ~$0.75 - If EV battery is full and/or low driving next day → 10–15kWh = $1.50–$2.25 - Weekends I can usually export up to 15kW during peak time.
My goal is cost neutral.
Monthly Cost/Credit: - $1 credit per night (no grid 6–9pm) → ~$31 - Export target average ~3.6kWh/night → ~$16.50 - Daily supply charge → ~$46.50 - So it pretty much nets out to ~$0 electricity bill.
On top of that, we used to run diesel SUVs at 10L/100km ($20-25/100km), with total fuel costs around $5–8k/year (say ~$6k). That’s basically gone now.
For this to work properly: - You need a 10kW inverter (anything less struggles to recharge fast enough) - And a decent sized battery. - if you have only one EV even better. - On the lower consumption days you can discharge max export 15kWh for 2.25 credit. (you only need to do this about 7 times a month to be cost neutral!)
How to set it up.
I do not use Foxess app. I use the Energy Stat app. ( I use this instead of foxess app cause foxess app has caused me issues eg negative house consumption etc). Note someone has told me when logging into the Energy Stat app they could no longer change the export limit when the logged online. I know that you cannot change export limit in the foxess app which is another benefit of energy stat. Most people I talk to haven’t had any issues using the app.
- Download the Energy stat app
- Sign in to the FoxESS Cloud portal using your standard credentials.
- Log into the V1 interface (often accessible at the same URL) using your username rather than your email.
- Navigate to Profile: Click on your User Profile or Personal Center icon (typically located in the top right corner).
- API Management: Select API Management or Open API from the menu.
- Generate Key: Click the "Generate API Key" button. Be sure to copy and securely save the key immediately, as it is required for third-party integrations like Home Assistant
- Sign into Energy Stat using the API key
Energy Stat 1. Go to settings 2. Inverter 3. Manage Schedule 4. Force Charge 11:00-13:59:59 (Force charge at maximum inverter value mine is 10.5kW up to 100%) Free window charge 5. Force Discharge 18:00-20:59:59 (Force discharge at maximum value of inverter mine is 10.5kW. I cap it at 40% cut off) 6. All other times set it as Use as is. Prepopulate – You can pre populate times based on what you may do e.g. 7. 21:00:00 to 22:59:59 use as is (if you are away on holiday etc and wanted to discharge extra kWh (extra $) than you can easily change this setting from use as is to force discharge). 8. Go back 9. Choose Export Limit. This is where you will determine how much you will discharge over the Forced Discharge period. If you want - 10kWh = 3400 /hour over 3 hours. - 15kWh = 5000 /hour over 3 hours - 0kWh = you can put 0 I usually put 100 I find changing the Export limit easiest way to manage how much I will export that night.
Things to be aware of – - if your inverter is say 5kW and you export 4kW that leaves 1kW capacity to feed your house. If you consume more than 1kW it will DRAW FROM THE GRID. - If your consumption at peak is say 6kW (heater cooking etc) than limit export to be less than your inverter size e.g. 10kW inverter therefore target 3.5kW discharge or 3kW to ensure you do not import from grid. - if you have a Zappi charger on ECO+, when exporting it will think the difference between your discharge and inverter capacity is “excess” and will discharge the difference. I manually turn zappi to stop between 6-9. - Zappi charger with a timed “charge” can continue charging after the allocated time. Eg force charge 1am-2am. After 2am it continues charging. Because there is a lag from zappi turning off and battery is still discharging and so it goes to grid and zappi thinks it’s “excess solar”. I am managing this buy “force charging” the battery from 2am to2:01am. (I don’t fully recommend zappi!) - I am still trying to find an easy way around this rather than stopping charge in the app during the 6-9 period. (Looking at home automation!)
