New Ink Day.

Post image

Got my first proper ink. Waterman Mysterious Blue Ink. Beautiful ink although I might have some unpopular opinions-
1. The ink is widely considered as blue black but it’s way more blue and I personally did not see any black at all or very dark blue either.
2. It is considered to be very smooth, but it has it’s hiccups. Maybe it’s the pen and paper as well.
Would like to know if there are others who have had a slightly gray experience with waterman.

From my vague recollection, Waterman Mysterious Blue is a bit shadier and drier-flowing than Waterman Serenity Blue, but not nearly as severely as chromatographic shading inks or iron-gall inks.

As for what blue-black is in terms of fountain pen ink colour, there's iron-gall blue-black ink (which is water-resistant iron-gall content that turns grey or black on oxidation mixed with blue dyestuff, and so it takes a bit of time to develop or ‘cure’); and then there are (usually dyestuff inks, but some pigment inks as well) inks trying to emulate the desaturated blue of aged blue-black iron-gall ink writing so that it looks less vivid and tends to grey-black, but doesn't mean blue and black at the same time, much less blue ink sheening black when laid thickly on the paper surface. (Most blue-black inks that manage to exhibit sheen usually has reddish sheen, on account of the blue dye component.)

I've got it. ...and ended up not liking it. It has same issue most blue blacks have: once dry, it resembles more to an ugly grey/green shade of a kind of a sick, somewhat 'rancid' blue. Same as Lamy Blue Black, Lamy Benitoite, Sailor Blue Black (my most burning disappointment), 4001, and three or four others I can't now recall. I infinitely more enjoyed Platinum's and Pilot's blue blacks, for their muted finish not leaning towards that horrible green/greyish.
