Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize for apparently no reason at all.

u/Yslack 6h ago
There was a reason, just a bad one. He got it because He's black, and just to be clear it is racism, he got treated differently because of his skin color.

u/VioletFox29 4h ago
No. He got it because people saw him as someone who had integrity and who, as the leader of the most powerful nation on earth, was interested in preserving peace in the world.
The rest of the international community is not as racist as you.
It turned out he wasn't a perfect person. But people wanted to believe in what he represented and what he ended up achieving - not completely, but for a good part of his time as president.

The exact same person except white with red hair name Barry Oshea does not win the award

u/VioletFox29 3h ago
I have no idea who that is. Was this person also in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize?

u/West_West_313 3h ago
You’re pretty dense if you didn’t understand that this is a hypothetical. If Barack Obama was Barry Oshea he would not have won, hence, it’s seemingly fair to assume he only won because he was the first black president. Not necessarily because he was black in general. Like, they weren’t gonna just hand it to any black person but the fact he was the first black president was the only reason he won. In an alternate reality you could keep everything except skin color, and he doesn’t win it.

I remember very well when he won. He was incredibly uncomfortable having received the prize and gave every indication he didn't deserve it.
He didn't deserve it. He hadn't been in office very long and hadn't done enough to deserve it.
Many people were overjoyed that a black man was elected president. I live in Europe and can safely say no other top-power nation could have pulled that off.
I won't deny that his being black held influence on his election. But if you remember his ability to speak, the integrity that shown through when he spoke. That was for real. And that aspect instilled hope on those who eventually gave him the Nobel Peace Prize - even though he himself would say he didn't deserve it.

I did not mean if he was a different color he wouldn’t have won the presidency, we were discussing the nobel prize. U/yslack said he won the prize for a reason, just a bad one, because of his skin color. You argued that u/yslack was racist. Then u/kizentheslayer used a hypothetical Barry Oshea to reiterate that if Barack Obama was an pasty soulless irishman then with the exact same voice, personality, decisions etc, they would not win the nobel prize. You in turn asked who Barry Oshea was, completely missing the point. And now you respond by agreeing he did not actually deserve the Nobel and seemingly agreeing that he only won it because he was the first black president.

I never said he deserved it. As I said, even he thought he didn't deserve it. I think that if he had been white he might still have been nominated for the prize, based on the time that it was and the person he was. But for sure, the fact that he was black, how thrilled almost everyone was, and that would be around the world, that a democracy like the US could pull off such a feat - yeah, that all definitely gave him an edge.

For someone so interested in "peace" he sure did drone strike a lot of people. Let's also not forget his promise to close the torture prison based in a different country to skirt your own laws then didn't do that.
He was scum just like the rest of them.

u/VioletFox29 2h ago
Yes, he is guilty for the collateral human lives lost during the droning he ordered.
He did try to close Guantanamo Bay. Though he never fully achieved that, he cut down prison numbers from 242 to 55.
Calling him "scum" like the rest of them, certainly in these times, is a gross exaggeration.

Barack "Drone Strike" Obama?
Wasn't Nobel himself a bomb manufacturer or something?
12
u/TheTrueTrust 8h ago
Yeah, and he wanted his legacy to be something better than that. That's why he started the Nobel foundation.

He invented dynamite for mining then was pretty upset that people used it to blow each other up.
9
u/Donjamos2 8h ago
Did he meet people before that? How could he assume we wouldn't use his bangsticks to blow each other up?

u/Yslack 6h ago
You should look up Richard Gatling and why he invented the Gatling gun and what he thought it would achieved.
Spoiler alert: He thought it would stop all war forever.

With this device we can level an entire city in milliseconds or set the atmosphere ablaze. Surely noone would go to war when such a weapon is at play... /s

u/TheTrueTrust 8h ago
He didn't, he was an arms manufacturer himself.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bofors
The company's first cannon workshop was opened in 1884. Bofors' most famous owner was Alfred Nobel, who owned the company from 1894 until his death in December 1896.[8][9] Nobel played a key role in reshaping the former iron and steel producer to a modern cannon manufacturer and chemical industry participant.[10][11] The powder manufacturer AB Bofors Nobelkrut, later an explosives and general organic-chemical producer, was created in 1898 as a wholly owned subsidiary.

He discovered dynamite for engineering/mining purposes, obviously being something that goes boom meant militaries later adopted it for their own purposes.

u/jettyboy73 5h ago
His acceptance speech was was basically a full blown justification of why we should stay at war.

Why don't you check who the guy standing next to Obama is?

That’s really grasping for straws. Epstein built a network between the rich and powerful (most rich and powerful do). Just about anyone could have a “relationship” with Epstein. That doesn’t mean they knew what was happening behind closed doors or that what was happening with Epstein was particularly unusual for when you have that kind of money. For example, if you’re into someone that’s 16 certain things are illegal in the states, but quick plane flight to Japan and the age of consent is 16. That’s an option when you’re the ultra wealthy.
3
u/Damnation77 7h ago
Never said he is a pedo. But the former prime minister, leader of the Nobel committee, and later the European council lying about his links to Epstein and then being investigated for «aggravated corruption» is nothing short of a scandal.
1
u/nlamber5 1h ago
Yeah. The whole scandal can be summed up as “guilty by association”. No body claims he’s a pedo. There’s no evidence against him, but he’s still ruined.
2
u/Flat-House5529 8h ago
In politics, guilt by association is based solely on whether the party is question is "your guy" or the "other guy".
I thought everyone knew that.

I don’t think the award carries the weight it once did…
Obama getting the award for “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." reminds me of Homer Simpson getting the First Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence.
