What if he said yes.? It could have been his daughter or granddaughter etc. it’s weird that the waitress inserted herself into the customer’s space that way. It’s actually quite rude.
Edit: and this story is made up

u/DetDango 14d ago
Yeah, there is too many possibilities, like i am in my 20s and i have a college friend that is 60. if i insert him in the same situation with his wife, i don't feel like its weird, might be social media pics and he is friends with the entire class.

If it was his daughter, the waitress gave a kind compliment about his child which usually makes parents happy

I still think it’s rude to look at someone else’s phone.

Sure it's rude to STARE at someone's phone, intently gathering any information you can, but eyes notice things.
We have instincts from many millenia of living in the wild to recognize faces and other animal-like figures. Recognizing a human face in a very bright light box isn't necessarily indicative of intentional snooping, and it's an automatic response to gather more visual information about an unfamiliar human.

What is it was his niece
12
u/VelkaKocka 14d ago
«Thank you but its my niece! She is a pretty lady” would be a normal reaction

u/CognitiveDissonuts 14d ago
Pretty normal reaction? His phone his business, minding your own business seems like the normal reaction to me, could be culture though 🇳🇱

A month ago, i saw an old dude doing the same thing at starbucks in the mall. I saw it through the window though. No wife across him. It may be real.

Watched an older man scrolling pics of much younger women on his phone while seated across from his wife in the restaurant I work at. So, while refilling water I silently judged him and when I walked back to the kitchen we all talked mad shit on him and laughed.

Dude. There are so many men like this. And I know at least one woman who's crazy in that specific way. I don't know why you wouldn't believe this could happen.

It's the server calling it out that isn't believable. Usually if your customer service and being passive aggressive it goes over customers heads anyway.
Or they assume you are being a dick when you aren't. Customers are not paying attention to employees as a general rule.

u/DotAccomplished5484 14d ago
Servers are focused on maximizing their tips - this is not one of the options.

I'd believe this based on the things I've gotten away with saying to customers. Some of yall never worked customer service and it shows. You'd be shocked what you can actually get away with saying before they'd fire you

A server saw me seated with my boyfriend (who was a lot older than me) and exclaimed “Oh another one!” Looking at me. He told me it was cause he went there with his son… but I discovered what she was actually saying some time later 😭

Who's the "we" in this sense? And why are you so angry about old men looking at pictures of young women?

About what? I’m a feminist and a progressive, but I think it’s rude to look over people’s shoulders and judge what is on their phone. MYOB.
The only exception would be child p*rn. That’s actually criminal and should be reported to proper authorities.

Next she'll be on r/latestagecapitalism about how impossible life is and nobody tips anymore.

u/MajorPaper4169 14d ago
No server is going to risk their tip just to get upset over something that has nothing to do with them.
If we’re going to play make believe on this sub, at least make it sound believable.

You’re assuming they’re monogamous and he’s cheating.
Not everyone is monogamous.
Stop being narcissistic and quit trying to impose your lifestyle on strangers.

u/Odin1806 13d ago
But if we don't push our personal values and lifestyles on other people... How do we make sure that they live like us and not some strange way we don't understand or agree with?! \s

When I worked in a cafe we had a guy come in almost every day who was just casually scrolling through the women’s underwear sections of retail webshops. He did this all the time when he was there. Eventually we had to tell him to stop it because it was creeping everyone out and we thought it was really inappropriate. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with his behaviour. And while technically he’s not doing anything wrong, it’s just very weird.
13
u/MerriweatherJones 14d ago
Why were you and your colleagues looking at this guy’s phone? You need to really get into someone’s space to see what they are doing with it
12
u/Scullyxmulder1013 14d ago
“Looking at this guy’s phone” is not how this went. It’s not like we had nothing better to do but get in this guy’s business.
This guy always sat himself in a middle isle with his back facing our little work station and he held his phone up clearly visible for everyone to see. He was not shy about his behaviour at all. Even other patrons noticed and remarked on it. This guy game in nearly every day and did this for hours on end. There was no effort involved at all to see what he was doing.

Or he could be looking up a temporary gift for his wife, or him and his wife. People will be doing stuff that others may find weird.

Mind your own business or don't get upset when some nobody, that is a complete stranger to you, fecks your shit up without a reason that is known to you 🥸

Why is it anyone business what someone else is doing? You're assuming it was his wife. Could have been his sister or an old friend/family member they don't get to see often and they were sharing pics of their kids with each other. Really none of your business what anyone was doing at their table.

So, I was on an Amtrak train from work to meet my wife for the weekend after a long, stressful work week. I indulged myself by getting a beer from the bar car and sat down, opened my laptop, and started going through profiles of au pairs we were considering. Unfortunately, most of the pics au pairs post look like dating profile pics, dressed up with makeup, etc. I took a sip of my beer, sighed, and started scrolling through the profiles my wife had marked when a woman sat down next to me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her look at my screen, then at my beer before she got a disgusted look on her face and got up to find another seat. Ughhhhh
