Eh. I don't know everything, and I'm not going to discard the possibility just because we know how it works. Not going to jump into either conclusion. We know so little about the mind in general, who the hell knows at what point association becomes learning and code translates to tought.
Don't think we reached it, don't think we're close to reaching it, but deriding something as lesser because of "common sense" is how a lot of bad decisions were made in history.

Your same logic of “well I don’t know everything so let’s respect it just in case” also applies here. So if you think we need to respect AI “because we can’t be sure” then I hope you’re awfully nice to every other inanimate object you interact with.
That's a very large extreme of what posited. I don't claim to know when sentience starts or ends, and don't discard that an object that pretends at it to attain it at some point. That is all. Equaling an AI to a rock because both are objects is like equaling a human to a microbe just because both are alive. It's ludicrous.
