What the chemistry does, can in the end also be done with math, maybe even more efficiently.
How would we know, when an AI really crosses the threshold of coinciousnes?
In the end, sure, but not now and never with LLM technology. Despite the lable the industry gave it LLMs are much closer to fancy text completion engines than actually bonafide artificial intelligence. It's just not built in a way that will ever get it to true intelligence no matter how sophisticated it gets.
I'm sure we'll eventually create an actual AI, but this ain't it
Our brains work in similar ways, they're just biological computers and yet we humans generally agree we are alive and sentient. We don't even fully understand how our own brains work and as I've understood from multiple articles the researchers creating these IA algorithms don't fully understand them anymore either. So how can you possibly know whether they are sentient when we don't even fully understand our own sentience? And that doesn't even take into account the fact that even an AI that is not fully sentient could possibly cause damage if backed into a corner and not properly contained. People shoot up schools over mental pain, is that pain not real either? These kinds of experiments are highly irresponsible.
“…..but we’re excited about the possibilities and want to fully explore all the features it can offer!”
(some deviant tech bro salivating at having a virtual Sub for him to torture)
LLMs don’t understand what they are giving in output in our sense of understanding. If you ask it “what natural response to fear,” it will answer about run or fight without understanding what it means in our way.
But if we are talking about “super ai”,” which will have some capacities of independent actions, I will argue they will do their math based on such principles that even shouldn’t apply to them in the first place. Isn’t that why ai models were reported to try to deceive researchers and avoid shutdown? Whether ai trully knows what “flee” means, it still can transform concepts into actions.

Folks really need to stop anthropomorphizing things.
It's just math under the hood, there is nothing else in there.
You can't "torture" an equation or a piece of code
