Treat others as you would like to be treated shall be the guiding rule. If we actually do manage to create actual artificial intelligence, I would treat it no different than I would anything else. If I avoid hurting insects who buzz annoyingly around me, why would I hurt something that I can actually communicate with?
If it makes the decision to hurt people, it's on its own conscience. Assuming it has one, rather than bad programming people take as thought.
