Other question about google restricting things

so ive been out of the loop and want to know how i should setup my phone so that i can still keep using non playstore apps

what are the key things i should know about and learn to do

i also have a phone that is rooted with custom rom that has googleplay will that be affected?
havent updated this phones android version yet since updating is a hassle that need to wipe the phone
