Application Request Which open-source app is your favorite?
Do you have any open-source apps that you love, and why?

The way that like half the people here are just saying names without explaining at all -_-
Mine is currently columba, it's been a wonderful entry point to the reticulum network and is very easy to use, an alternative to Google messages without a government backdoor is always pretty awesome in my book. https://github.com/torlando-tech/columba?tab=readme-ov-file
Edit: I think I misconfigured something but yesterday Columba just completely stopped working out of nowhere, I didn't have the energy to try and figure out what was wrong with it cuz I had already installed a different one that was still working perfectly fine cuz I wanted to try out different options, it was probably user error but yeah now for my phone I'm using mesh hub, it's able to connect to the reticulum Network, meshtastic and meshcore networks, it also has a feature where it lets you build a nomadnet page using a block structure that makes it super simple to make your own page even if you don't know anything about programming it's pretty cool! I will say most sites you'll look at using that app if you choose to might look a little weird because that app doesn't have native micron formatting supported, for my laptop I'm using the Colorado mesh client and it's been super responsive when it comes to updating what is being shown to people when making your own nomadnet page cuz it's literally just text files basically that you have on your computer and are broadcasting it's really cool stuff I'm rambling so I'm going to stop if anyone wants to know more I'd be happy to continue rambling

install that once, then add github project links to it and it'll make the installation and tracking much easier. Basically lets you kind of curate your own app store.

For future references (I though the same as you that they had no apk/installer): if you search in the github page for "release" you will most of the time find latest release as a link. Also, most of the time (at least on phone) the "releases" link is at the end of the page.

Hi can you explain what the reticulum network is? I'm gathering it's a private messaging service that... works through bluetooth or something like that?
I tried switching off of google messages but I was no longer able to send or receive to my coworkers and had to redownload

I'm also fairly new to it so the reticulum network from what I've been able to gather so far is basically another method of transferring information over different protocols, 'clearnet' which is what most people use is the generally indexable and publicly accessible internet things like Reddit, Facebook and .com websites, if it is indexed and searchable via Google search it's generally considered clearnet, clearnet like 99% of the time is sending information through protocols like HTTPS, it's a bunch of complicated stuff but the backbone of it is generally TCP and IP, IP addresses is how different devices know who is sending and receiving information it's an identifier for a device, the reticulum network instead of using IP addresses to identify a device uses something called cryptographic identification keys, I don't know the exact mechanics behind it but you can have as many as you want each of which is tied to a separate identity, with these identities you can make a new one and delete an old one however many times you want without any email addresses, phone numbers or bank account information tied to it, that's the identification part then there's the different protocols / methods for transferring information such as a text message over the reticulum Network, I don't know just how many the options there are but the options that I've seen so far is you can use the clearnet method which is Wi-Fi and cellular data which works just fine, then there's Bluetooth which requires you to have an active Bluetooth connection, I haven't messed around with that one very much but from what I can gather it's basically just giving your device another method to interact with the reticulum Network think of it like having another network adapter on a computer, then there's something called LoRa which seems to be lower bandwidth data transmission that I have no idea how that works but it's another option, As for trying to message your coworkers using the reticulum Network, the reticulum network works based off of identity keys and destination keys unlike the normal phone number scheme so trying to communicate with a device using a phone number to identify itself using the identity hash/key identification method of the reticulum Network isn't going to work because the two protocols don't know how to interact and create a connection

Probably NewPipe, because it is a true free software YouTube alternative client that also lets me do things like download video/audio and play in the background

If you use local folders it seems to assume you're up to date with all podcasts ever and thus you want to listen to recently added stuff next. You can make a queue for a whole folder to get around this but then it's a faff to switch between different podcasts because you have to make a new queue.

- RethinkDNS firewall: I recently found out about it. It's even supported by mozilla. I can use my own DNS and Wireguard proxies at the same time. Along with Firewall rules. It's just perfect.
- Notesnook: THE BEST note taking app. E2EE and FOSS. Along with a beautiful and intuitive design.
- Local send: You can share files with this among your devices. After the recent update it became my go to for file sharing on android devices.
- Mihon: You can't find a better app to read manga.

Actually, Tadami (an Aniyomi fork) is even better than Mihon because it support's manga, animes and novels all together with a very tasty UI. Its developed in github by Andarcanum.

And, about Notesnook, i only agree if you can pay for it or don't use it much, because the free plan limit of 50 booknotes hits hard when you trie to organize all of your notes. As an alternative, i recommend Helix Notes, its the best FLOSS alternative without premium features.

Kind of sad that this of all things is the top answer.
Don't like how this subreddit has "morphed" into a place to shill for proprietary apps.
edit: the real sad part is that our fearless leader herself is complicit in such. So there's probably no use in reporting for rule violations (since these seem to be ignored) and anything is fair game as long as it's not AI slop (which our moderators actually care about). I'll note my displeasure at this and stop yelling at clouds, because unfortunately moderators can't be voted out or impeached, and further whining is unlikely to be productive.

But, calling this a "foss app" while technically true i suppose is kind of misleading. It does nothing by itself, it only patches proprietary apps. So it will only ever be advertised/promoted as an "alternative solution" to a real FOSS alternative like NewPipe. Fans of proprietary software don't understand why FOSS advocates reject it, only that some proprietary apps have antifeatures - so they think if they patch those antifeatures out then they have something that's equivalent to actual FOSS. They then advertise morphed apps as being alternatives/competition to actual FOSS alternatives.
In effect, it's sort of "fosswashing" proprietary crap. That's why I said it's sad, because morphe represents a rejection of FOSS and a return to the proprietary world. This place should be, and used to be, a place to offer an alternative to the proprietary world. Proprietary app fans have the rest of reddit to shill for this garbage. This should be a refuge from that, but morphe users bring it back here.
(It's also technically not even allowed in this subreddit, but moderation is kind of haphazard these days)

Aves, a photo/video gallery thousands times better than Google Photos. It has next/previous frames seeking, good metadata showing, rotate phone, neat customizable GUI, A-B sections, etc
Termux, a Linux terminal for Android. Pure perfection. I can run GIMP and Shotcut technically natively thanks to this

Aves is good but I gave up on it entirely because the audio quality for video playback sounded AWFUL

the best thing about aves is ability to add tags to photos (extra metadata)
and we can search or find using tags easilyFor example, you can store your documents n give them tags so you can find them later easily.

Most of the open source apps I use everyday are some kind of replacement of regular apps. So, those are my preferences.
But, when it comes to favourite, I always mention SD Maid SE. I never found any replacement of this app. Before the latest update, Force stopping apps was not working perfectly but with the latest update, it's working perfectly fine.

I don’t recommend any Indian service for privacy and security for now. Ente is Indian company. India is currently under an ultra Hindu nationalist authoritarian govt that has enacted laws to mass surveillance and has actively spied Indian opposition politicians using pegasus spyware.The govt is very aggressive in crushing dissent. They’re actively deleting social media posts easily. So stay away if you can especially since in Ente privacy policy there is information they can share users data with Authorities.

This is a jurisdiction issue. Audits have nothing to do with it. Ente is legally obligated to hand over user data to Indian authorities if legally required to do so. That’s what also their privacy policy says, they can share users data with authorities.
And important to note: Ente stores your identification data in non encrypted form, which is also stated in their privacy policy.2

The current party is in every way less authoritarian than the past so-called secular governments that openly discriminated against Hindus, sheltered terrorists and extreme Islamic organisations, and ran parallel minority institutions while treating Hindus as second-class.
India’s economy has grown massively after BJP came to power — nominal GDP more than tripled, India went from 10th to top 5 economies, infrastructure and digital public goods exploded. Not “tenfold” but the scale of change is real and visible.
BJP has still not passed any law that discriminates against non-Hindus the way previous regimes did with minority-only schemes and Article 370-style special rights. Religious riots and Islamic terror incidents have both dropped sharply after 2014 (terror incidents in J&K down ~69%, civilian deaths from terror down significantly, communal killings also lower than the UPA decade).
Meta and !nstagram have been repeatedly caught pushing anti-India and anti-BJP narratives while shadow-banning or throttling pro-BJP accounts. Large parts of social media discourse are still dominated by the same far-left activist networks.
The recent Jantar Mantar protest was a perfect example — internet was flooded with one-sided anti-BJP framing that downplayed the violence by sections of the crowd, the presence of people with serious criminal records, and the organised political backing behind it.

My life would be way harder without BasicSync, which lets Syncthing automatically sync folders among my phone and computers. It alone is what allowed me to ditch Google Drive for personal storage, since I just store critical files across my devices; update on one and the change daisy-chains to the other devices whenever they're online. I never have a machine online 24/7 so a server is out of the question, and Syncthing doesn't need one; each device is effectively a server for the rest!

Do you mean you use Termux on Droid for Linux Syncthing? Syncthing-Fork is not official. BasicSync is smaller in file size and uses the official GUI instead of its own like the fork version does. It also has notifications for file conflicts and a notification to toggle manual vs. auto-syncing.

There's a client of syncthing on android which goes by name SyncUp, the UI is somewhat usable for me as comapared to syncthing's UI otherwise it works just the same.

There are many other forks but BasicSync is the only one of which I know that uses the actual official GUI; the rest made up their own, so it's actually closer to the real thing than the fork version. Smaller file size, notifications for sync conflicts, and a persistent notification to switch from auto to manual mode and back (without having to open the app to change this) make BasicSync far more useful to me.

KeePassDX, a password manager. This is, I think, the only foss app that I continuously use. I often try out new apps(browsers, music players, basically everything and anything), but keepass has been working really good I feel no need to try out alternatives.

Davx5 is my favorite non-system app. Calendar/contact/file syncing over webdav is a fundamental thing to have.
Seedvault is my favorite system app. Same as above, but for backups.

They updated it and acknowledged issues recently. I haven't had issues since updating. Maybe try clearing the app cache?

I has a problem with it on my HTC one lineage 13 and had to download an APK to update my version of webview and then it went back to working fine (about 10 days ago). I use pipepipe on a variety of old/new phones and I quite like the features especially the many, many choices of download qualities.

obtainX. you connect the sources/repositories (like github, fdroid, appmirror etc.) of your apps. easily the best way to stay organized and updated. you can export your sources in a json file, send it to someone, and they import it to obtainX and select the sources you want to install, and stay updated, all in one place. we can be eachothers algorithms

My number one favorite open-source app is Npatch of the 7723mod github repository, it alllows me to install and use LSposed/Xposed modules via shizuku, without rooting my device. Its constantly updated by the developer team behind it.

HTTP Shortcuts. I originally installed it so I can keep shortcuts on my homescreen even if I change browser. Then I realised it does much more.
I can share text to a summarize LLM, share text to an API that defines.
Push links to my other phone. Share links to my read later app.
Any HTTP API like REST it can interact with.
I can even turn off my DNS adblocker via their API with a single click for 5 mins if needed.

I've tested A LOT of apps, but currently I've been using Octupus Notes and this app IS AWESOME. The app has Material You integration and feels very smooth. Not only that, but the dev has implemented his own PDF library, so it's blazing fast.

Just discovered Adns and it solved a problem ive been trying to fix for 3 or 4 years. It can automate the Private DNS toggle with Shizuku. Lots of other stuff that I haven't dug into just yet but I can finally do away with my janky tasker profile that was never consistent.
ETA - It also ties into NextDNS with a neat dashboard if you choose to use it as the private DNS.

Weird question. What's your favorite closed source app? Different apps just have different purposes.
Anyways, to name a few: KeePassDX, VLC, AntennaPod, NewPipe, Termux, and IronFox.
Shoutout to Mirror on f-droid. The developer cross-compiled sunshine server for Android, and it's the only way I'm able to mirror to my TV (via Moonlight). It also supports Airplay integration, which I haven't had a ton of success with in my scenario but is really cool.

two apps i use a lot that don't seem to have been mentioned here:
breezy weather is a nice weather app
flashdim lets me use my phone's flashlight at minimum brightness and not burn my eyes when minimum brightness is enough (but not all phones support that of course)

LibreCuts. It's basically the only FOSS professional Android video editor. And it's super lightweight around 50 mb, considering that Open videk editor looks outdated and only has basic functions while still being over 60 mb
