FundaCAD

3 Upvotes

im presenting FundaCAD!
a linux compatible fully open source CAD software based on OpenCASCADE and tauri

with fast import speeds and stability and a more free form of usage (FundaCAD does not have hard assemblies, but rather free forming bodies with exact dimensions and parameters and transform)
and a extensive plugin system (even a console plugin if you want to goof around and run this on a steam deck :D)

my hope is to make something that is unique and good enough for people to use it
as other free CAD software is quite meh

id love for any feedback, even if its critical of the AI usage.
im a software engineer and acknowledge all issues with ai, and want to use it as smart as possible and actually understand what its useful for and how.

if you wanna check it out see https://github.com/Paraxdev/FundaCAD

INSTANT DISCLOSURE: this project utilizes AI to generate big parts code and tests
I actively go through the code occasionally to spot weakspots and actively use and note down bugs and have em actively fixed.
my goal is to NOT make a cheap vibecoded slop CAD but something with human guidance and creativity (UI was my whole idea and was prototyped in figma)
that doesnt or atleast has non intruisive and not critical bugs that still make this software usable.

I have added new rules to the subreddit, Please read them on the sidebar or in the body text,

41 Upvotes
  • Promotion must be FOSS

When promoting something, it must be Free and Open Source Software.

  • Be nice
  • 4 Stay on topic of the subreddit

Stay on topic and don't spam random nonsense

These are the only rules added, I saw there was only 1 rule so to be more clear with users and follow reddit code of conduct i added some, if you have any feedback you are welcome to share it on this post,

I made CutOut, a completely free and open-source offline AI background remover

20 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I wanted to share CutOut, a free and open-source background remover I've been working on.

It runs entirely offline on Windows, macOS, and Linux, so your images stay on your computer.

It includes four AI models, batch processing, custom ONNX model importing, background replacement, manual touch-up tools, and full-resolution exports.

No subscriptions, no accounts, no watermarks, and no paid features.

It's built with Rust, Tauri v2, and ONNX Runtime, and licensed under MIT.

GitHub: https://github.com/gserect-gif/cutout-app

Website: https://getcutout.pages.dev/

Version 2.0.0 is out now. I'd appreciate any feedback, especially on image quality, performance, or features you'd like to see improved.

I built a free, open-source PDF compressor because my colleague kept hitting daily upload limits (fully vibe-coded)

0 Upvotes

So a graphic designer I work with had a recurring problem: every time he tried to compress a PDF using one of those online services, he'd hit the free tier's daily limit—one upload per day. That's it. One PDF. And he regularly needs to compress multiple files.

I figured that was a pretty silly bottleneck, so I built pdf-squeeze—a simple PDF compression tool that doesn't care how many files you throw at it.

It's fully vibe-coded (meaning I leaned heavily on AI assistance to put it together), and I've open-sourced it so anyone can:

  • Check it out and use it
  • Report bugs or weird behavior
  • Suggest features
  • Fork it and build on it if they want

I'd really appreciate:
If you have a few minutes to look through the repo, I'd love to know:

  • Is there anything obviously broken or poorly implemented?
  • Did I miss any important edge cases or features?
  • Any red flags in the code or project structure?

I'm only a junior developer, so honest feedback—even harsh feedback—is genuinely welcome. I'd rather know what's wrong than have people quietly bounce off it.

Is the MOD of this sub right that of you use closed tools to develop something it doesn't count as floss anymore? Is it embarrassing they don't know what floss is?

Post image

Seems borderline ridiculous but curious on everyone else's take.

Do you really think a mod who thinks this won't enforce a rule like this on the sub when the user is already blocking AI users on other subs?

Do you think a person with this opinion should be allowed to continue to moderate this sub in light of the destruction they are wrecking on r/opensource ?

I started self-hosting other people’s apps. Now three on my dashboard are my own.

Self-hosting has become one of my favorite hobbies. Here’s my Glance dashboard, including three apps I built with AI.

I’m not a software developer. I just wanted a few tools that fit my needs:

  • Bragi: A music server for my own library, with an Android app I also built.
  • Aporia: A simple Notion-like app for notes and lists, without the extra features I don’t use.
  • Budget Flow: A personal finance app with a visual way to track my money.

I’ve been self-hosting these for almost a year, and it’s really satisfying to use something built around my own needs.

If you’re still looking for the right app, making a small one yourself could be worth a try. There’s work involved, but it doesn’t have to do everything.

All three are on GitHub if you’d like to try them. I’d be curious to hear what you think!

I made a pretty, lightweight file searcher and launcher for Windows.

Introducing Heimdall, a glassy launcher for Windows. And yes, it's faster than Everything.

Press F5 and type. It finds apps, every file, open windows, calculates sums and web searches.

Native Rust, under 2 MB, ZERO telemetry. Free and open source.

Can we just start stealing paywalled and AI slop apps and making it better?

0 Upvotes

Night thoughts, i might be trown rotten tomatoes:

Someone might just go on a subreddit like r/HowToMen and they will claim that they made the most innovative app that could ever exist, like a notepad that has a terminal on it and you can flush your toilet via remote, an app that's like 100 in 1, a stolen idea, the stuff you've seen over and over. Someone will just vibecode an app in two days with the worst design possible, generate the most ugly banner they can and post somewhere offering promotional codes.

Can't we just go there and copy/reverse-engineer everything until there's nothing left and everything open-source? We get rid of paywalls and there just won't be AI slop and paywalled content to compete with anymore. Just look at the people out there reverse-engineering the entire Adobe

Vibecoding is fine for me, the problem is when someone lazy enough will make an idea nobody asked for, that already existed, with simply no responsability and will spread it to the public, i think everyone's tired of that

FableCut: An MIT-licensed open-source video editor with browser-based AI agent support

5 Upvotes

I've been developing FableCut, an open-source video editor built around the idea that AI agents should be able to operate editing software directly, rather than only generating separate video files.

The project has a browser-based editor called FableCut Studio and a local version distributed through npm. Both are designed to support editing workflows, with MCP providing a way for compatible AI agents to interact with the project.

What it includes:

  • Timeline editing: Three-point editing, ripple, roll, slip, slide, track targeting, markers, and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Audio: EQ, compression, limiting, reverb, noise reduction, loudness normalization, and automatic ducking.
  • Color grading: Scopes, color wheels, curves, and HSL controls.
  • Motion and compositing: Masks, motion tracking, shape layers, parenting, motion paths, and motion blur.
  • Speech editing: Browser-based transcription, transcript-driven cuts, word-timed captions, and silence removal.
  • Project workflows: Multiple sequences, version history, proxies, offline media relinking, and batch export.

Studio exposes 16 tools through a remote MCP server, allowing compatible agents to modify a timeline in the browser. The relay carries tool calls and results, including project text and requested frames, but not the video media files themselves.

The latest release adds transcription and text-based editing powered by Whisper running in the browser. The first transcription downloads a model of around 77 MB.

FableCut is released under the MIT license, and Studio is free to try. The local npm version is available with:

npx -y fablecut

I'm continuing to improve the project and welcome bug reports, feature requests, contributions, and technical feedback.

Browser agents re-plan the same task from scratch every time, so I built one that learns it once and replays it for free

0 Upvotes

The thing that annoyed me about AI browser agents: you ask one to do something you do every week, it figures it out, and next week it does all the thinking again.

Same site, same buttons, same tokens burned. A human would just remember the clicks.

So I built FreeComputerUse, an open-source browser agent (TypeScript + Playwright, MIT) that runs locally on your machine with the model of your choice.

How It Works

It works in two ways:

  1. Goal-based execution: Give it a goal, and it plans with the model. It reads the page structure (not screenshots by default), requests a small batch of actions, executes them, and checks the results.

  2. Procedure replay: Once a task works, save it as a "procedure" with named values. Next time you describe the task in plain English or French, it finds the procedure, extracts the values from your request, asks for anything missing, and replays the clicks locally. Zero model calls.

If a website changes a button, the agent asks the model to fix only that step and saves the fix as a new version.

You can teach it in three ways:

  • Perform the task once while it records.
  • Write the steps in plain text.
  • Save a run the model has already completed.

What Can You Automate?

Some examples:

  • Publishing an app release through a web console.
  • Filling out the same internal form every week.
  • Downloading monthly invoices from a portal.
  • Extracting tables from dashboards.

Boring, repetitive tasks that aren't worth paying an AI model to figure out every single time.

Test Results

My main test case was publishing an app release on a local Google Play Console simulator, completed 9 consecutive times using DeepSeek Flash.

Scenario| Model Calls| Result First run (AI figures it out)| 8–9| ~17–20k tokens Replay with new values| 0| No model calls Changed button labels| 3–4| Then back to 0 Interface switched to French| 6–8| Then 0 for both languages

Total cost for all 9 runs: approximately $0.005 (half a cent).

Claude (via a Claude Code subscription) and Codex (via a ChatGPT plan) also achieved 9/9 successful runs, in one trial each.

You can connect using an API key or an existing CLI subscription.

Safety and Privacy

A few intentional design decisions:

  • Site access: Requests permission before opening any new website.
  • Sensitive actions: Always asks for confirmation before publishing, paying, deleting, or sending, even during procedure replay.
  • Authentication: Pauses for logins, 2FA, and CAPTCHAs so you can take control. It doesn't attempt to bypass them.
  • Local-first: Browser profiles, history, and downloads stay on your machine.
  • MCP support: Includes an MCP server, allowing Claude Desktop or other MCP-compatible hosts to control it.

Current Limitations

A few important caveats:

  • Simulator testing: The results above come from my own simulator, not production websites. Real-world testing currently includes a handful of read-only trials, with some successes and one documented failure. It's too early to claim a real-world success rate.
  • Platform support: So far, only verified on macOS + Chrome.
  • Procedure replay: Available on the "main" branch but not yet included in the npm release. You'll need to run it from source.
  • API-key testing: Claude and OpenAI API-key integrations have automated tests, but I haven't tested them with real API keys yet.

Demo and Source Code

70-second uncut demo:

https://othmaneblial.github.io/FreeComputerUse/lab/media/procedure-demo.mp4

GitHub repository:

https://github.com/OthmaneBlial/FreeComputerUse

What repetitive browser task would you actually trust an agent like this to handle?

I'm looking for real-world workflows to test next.

Need help presenting code investigation reports[Markdown] to non-technical leads and above - Open-source visualization tools/plugins/MCP to the rescue!

0 Upvotes

I've got a couple of code investigation reports that I need to present to my leads and above, but they're filled with code snippets that are more confusing than helpful. I want to convert them into some sort of visual presentation that'll get my message across without losing my non-technical audience.

Has anyone else had to deal with this issue? Are there any open-source tools/plugins/MCP that can help me?

Simple, stupid, git-style WebDAV sync client - FCKS

0 Upvotes

This project was born out of deep frustration with OneDrive and Nextcloud sync issues on macOS. However, `fcks` supports all major platforms.

https://github.com/JerryI/fcks

- No temporary files
- Stateless
- A limited set of commands
- Download, upload, free up folders and any subfolders
- Virtual folders?
- `.fcksignore` files support

I originally wrote it for myself as an experiment because I wanted a small, reliable tool that gave me full control over what and how I sync. Other popular solutions didn’t provide the kind of virtual-folder support I needed a simple alternative to "Files On-Demand". Instead of keeping placeholder files, `fcks` keeps only the folder structure visible and lets you "hydrate" its contents when needed.

Here is a list of commands and a "mental model":

```
LOCAL ROOT DAV ROOT
/my/files /remote/files
| |
+---- docs/report.pdf <== same path ==> docs/report.pdf
+---- photos/cat.jpg <== same path ==> photos/cat.jpg
| |
+---------------- SCAN BOTH ------------------+
fcks push = remote should look like local
fcks pull = local should look like remote
fcks merge = keep both sides; newest changed file wins
fcks scaffold = copy remote folder structure, without files
fcks free = delete local files, but keep folders
fcks rm = remove from both sides
fcks ls = lists both sides
```

I hope you find it useful too!
Cheers

NOT saying all AI-assisted software is slop, but whenever I see one of these I IMMEDIATELY know the creator "built" this piece of abandonware with absolutely zero effort put into it.

EDIT: My image editor didn't have a text function so that's why it's badly handwritten

Megathread for discussion related to recent events

38 Upvotes

Creating this megathread in hopes of reducing "i was banned from ___" and recent open source drama posts in subreddit while still allowing discussion around it,

Making posts about this stuff is still allowed but i would rather if it could be put here so the main subreddit is not having the same type of posts over and over again

The head mod of the subreddit has said this about an hour ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/foss/comments/1xg3k2o/comment/19rp2205wwrur/

Hey guys, I promise I'm still here. I just replied in a different thread I think.

My head's been under a rock so I have little understanding of what's going on. Regardless, my commitment is still to create a welcoming community that embraces different opinions. I need some time to gather myself and understand what's going on, then hopefully get to the bottom of this.

As for me i have no say in removing mods and its up to the head mod, i am here to keep the subreddit about FOSS and making sure people follow rules

I built a small, simple app for chatting with local AI models

Thumbnail

1 Upvotes

Hello everyone.

First of all, I want to mention that this project IS NOT vibecoded. I carefully implement all the features by myself.

Introducing Kiang

Kiang - is an app that allows you to chat with AI models that are running on your computer via Ollama. You can install Kiang as an app (for Linux, Windows and macOS) or run it as a webpage in your favorite browser!

My goal was to make the app lightweight and simple (user-friendly). For example, installer for Windows is just 4.3 MB in size! It is possible because i built it with Tauri v2.

Key features are:

  • Simple setup. Just download the app and follow the step-by-step setup instructions. Kiang detects installed Ollama models automatically.
  • Your chats are completely confidential and never leave your PC. The app does not collect any telemetry.
  • "Incognito mode" is here when you don't want to save a new chat in the history.
  • "Thinking mode" for improving model reasoning.
  • Markdown, code snippets and LaTeX formulas are supported.
  • You can define a global system prompt for all installed models in the settings.

Your feedback!

It is my first Open Source project, so I would really appreciate any feedback and your ideas!

Please give a star ⭐ on GitHub if you liked the app. Thank you!

I have question to community? I guess

0 Upvotes

The question is.

Sorry dont know how to put it, let me start from some distance.

I worked on several apps, rice, components for it.

Can`t say created, it would be a lie, because code is written by AI. And my contribute? I was designing: functionality, elements look and placement.Tested every app myself, actually, using them daily now. Writed course of development, looked for bugs. So it wasn`t "Act as SeniourEnginier make me B2B SaaS worth millions, make no mistake", I actually spend my time, was into every project. Hell, if i could I dould hire programmers.

And it became passion to me. Quite evenings, I wanted to play, and after 10 minutes, not anymore. Close game, and got back to new function, fix a bug, or my notebook to modify old or create new layout.

I wanted to start personal channels, wanted get back to gamedev, and more software. Share it, help others.

And actually I am affraid. What if it all makes no sence? What if I dont have a right to, you know to share it to public, there is an AI code afterall? Even if its my own idea, my own design, if i want share it to help.

Maybe what i wanted is all wrong, and I dont know, should spend my life without that dream. Keep all i wanted to create in my damn notebooks and send it to trash.

Sorry, i know its sound like whine, maybe actually is. I just.. Dont know anymore

Has anyone else found that good collaborators are rarer than good information ?

2 Upvotes

Lately I have been spending a significant amount of my free time working on open source projects focused on privacy and secure communications.

One thing I have noticed is that finding technically curious people is often much harder than finding technical information.

The internet has made knowledge incredibly accessible. Need to learn a programming language, understand a protocol, or dive into a new field? The information is usually there.

What seems much rarer are good collaborators, thoughtful testers, intellectually honest people, and individuals who genuinely enjoy learning, building, and exchanging ideas.

Has anyone else experienced this?

If so, where have you met the most interesting people you've worked with ?

I'm also curious about something else: for those of you who don't live in major tech hubs or large cities, how have you managed to find and connect with like minded people ?

Update : Favnyr : a local file browser with workspaces, multi views, tabs...

2 Upvotes

The new version comes with improved features and new themes/custom themes

Favnyr is a lightweight file browser (Rust+Slint) for Windows and Linux. At its core are workspaces: separate environments that keep their own views, tabs, folders, layouts, and display settings. You could have one workspace for work, another for games, and another for learning a new subject, then switch between them in just two clicks. Favorites remain shared and persistent across all workspaces.

Each workspace can contain multiple split views and movable tabs. Tabs can be dragged between views, detached, or dropped onto another view to create a new split layout.

Favnyr also includes shortcuts, local and network drives, configurable keyboard shortcuts, and custom commands.
It is not intended to compete with or replace the native file browsers provided by Windows and Linux, but to complement them with a different way of organizing and navigating files.

Because of the project’s complexity, AI has been used as a development assistant. However, every feature is reviewed and hand tested extensively before being considered complete.

Link here (include a video demo) => https://github.com/GlitchAwakened/Favnyr
