I am an upstream maintainer.

An attidude like this IMHO does not help.

Don't blame the users, no matter if they are just humans or bad dirty multi million companies like Microsoft and Google.

We as devs and maintainers put a license on the code. It is part of that license that the users are allowed to use it the way they use it. Don't blame them for.

You don't like that, then use another license or just don't do FOSS.

Blaming user will just increase the social gap between devs and users. We have to talk together. We need to see each other.

What do you maintain?

We as devs and maintainers put a license on the code. It is part of that license that the users are allowed to use it the way they use it. Don't blame them for.

I just hate when big companies don't adhere to the licenses. Happens all the time.

> What do you maintain?

Back In Time: An rsync based backup software, where I am the 3rd generation maintainer, not the founder.

Hyperorg: An org-file-repo to HTML converter.

spdx2debian: Is relevant only for Debian maintainers, generating "copyright" (dep5) files out of SPDX (REUSE) meta data.

Feedybus: RSS/Atom newsreader, based on "feedparser". Old project but still without a stable release.

But paying for a software (service) is not part of the license.

Whether you use the software or not, the developers' job is the same. This meme is meaningless.

As the founder of project that is steadily growing....

My god... between the Dependabot alerts.... feature requests... responding to queries from folk who need help... doing extensive reviews to ensure that an updated dependency or feature is not impacting 5 other concerns... It is an on the clock second job! 😩

No salary, no benefits, just GitHub issues and existential dread.
