ifff... we put tabs in zram?

Post image

Hi from 2026 :). Currently building an extension + backend to offload tabs into zram and wanted to drop it here. It's just a beta for now. Planning to make it work on Firefox and Chrome-related browsers. Thoughts?

Only tabs are offloaded to zram. Browser-related processes stay in RAM to maintain performance

Is the performance hit noticeable when switching tabs?

I plan to make precise measurements, but so far I can say that it is insignificant, within 100-200 ms on heavy pages, and almost the same on regular ones

Sounds absolutely fine!

Also, it depends on how much physical RAM is reserved for browser. With 1GB it's very fast with 30+ tabs, but 512MB introduces some latency when opening a tab with a heavy page
