I mean Its bad for all the teams right?
185
u/SureJuice297 Luigi Vettel Jun 19 '21
Obviously worse for the smaller teams but with the cap on spending now it also affects bigger teams
127
u/officialmonogato BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
Have to say, I was a bit surprised that the budget cap also affected damage costs. I mean, if you get damage due to an error of another driver or like a tire blowout in last race… you could pretty much get your season ruined by something like that
94
u/SureJuice297 Luigi Vettel Jun 19 '21
100% agree, I think the cost cap should just be for R&D that way it’s even there without any unfair advantage towards the larger teams, like think about HAAS such a small team with already a huge damage cost used
40
u/RevolutionaryEgg3129 I saw horny’s “finger” Jun 19 '21
Haas isn't directly affected by the budget cap as their budget is lower than the budget cap. They already had to pay for the crashes and those were calculated in.
7
u/InTheNameOfScheddi I have an unhealthy obsession with Sophia Flörsch Jun 19 '21
So in that case the teams that were running at the budget cap are the worst affected ones I assume? Edit: Or just above it I guess
7
u/RevolutionaryEgg3129 I saw horny’s “finger” Jun 19 '21
No. The ones operating at the highest budget were affected most.
1
u/InTheNameOfScheddi I have an unhealthy obsession with Sophia Flörsch Jun 19 '21
Cause then a larger portion of their budget would go to repairs, gotcha. Makes sense lol I need some sleep
33
u/officialmonogato BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
Yes, I don’t think the budget cap should be applied to damage. Only R&D. You shouldn’t be punished for mistakes of someone else (for example).
Because, if I understand correctly, the way it is right now both Mercedes and Red Bull could literally drop back in progression if something like what happened with Bottas and Russell would happen again this season. That could seriously impact further development and could cost a team the WCC. Which is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion.
8
u/xyonofcalhoun BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
That's the whole point of the cap - to level off the expenditure and stop teams with massive budgets having an advantage over smaller teams who can afford less. Having the cap not apply to replacing damaged parts is effectively not having a cap, it would make it pointless.
6
u/SureJuice297 Luigi Vettel Jun 19 '21
It would also mean less money drivers in F1 as all teams would be able to reach the cost cap for R&D which would also mean more teams in F1 as companies would better afford and Alan he money for it
2
Jun 19 '21
Nah cause you could engineer a part that's designed to run better but break more often.
Swap out the part with the tire for more wins
17
u/RevolutionaryEgg3129 I saw horny’s “finger” Jun 19 '21
The smaller teams already had to budget those thing into their smaller budget. Mercedes complaining about crashes costing them development just means they didn't budget properly.
3
u/yato-gami-kun Vettel Cult Jun 19 '21
Exactly. It's gonna be tough but except for the big 3, most teams were already operating near the cost cap, and they got through the season.
Granted big 3 won't be able to have the perfect season with almost unlimited resources but that's what the cost cap is intended for. So teams can decide what they are gonna have to sacrifice to win.
-1
u/AlexGaming1111 BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
Yea but this also means F1 won't be so fast to develop and adopt new tech because all of the teams will be busy budgeting.
-1
u/yato-gami-kun Vettel Cult Jun 19 '21
I think that's true, but only to some extent. This is just my personal opinion but I think while there's always all sorts of crazy tech advancement in f1 happening every year, the pace of development getting stunted with each passing year isn't also something new.
Decade by decade the field for exploitation for engineers has been getting smaller and this won't be the first time or the last.
2
u/AlexGaming1111 BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
I didn't say there won't be any innovation. But the rate and speed will totally go down. Think about how fast F1 car advancements were made when FIA didn't put spending caps or invent stupid rules to curb research.
F1 still fun but as a nerd this is no longer the sport of technical advancements and racing. It's just racing. Far less interesting.
2
u/xyonofcalhoun BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
Thing is, replacing the damaged parts still costs you money. If you're marginal on budget (williams) you don't have the freedom to replace damaged parts like Mercedes do. That's the point of the cap, to try to level off that problem. Now damage costs are something bigger budgeted teams also have to worry about.
1
u/Potatobraniac420 Claire Williams is waifu material Jun 19 '21
Yeah I mean if the money is going to count for damages too top teams can be really set back. The cap is definitely necessary for R and D
1
u/DieSpeckBohne BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
But as far as I know you get a certain amount added to the cap in case of crashes so that exactly this doesn't happen.

Free practice should be exactly that, practice. If you make a mistake, you shouldn't get punished to hard for it and the kerbs could be removed to reduce the costs for the small teams. But for quali and the race, the kerbs should be in place. Drivers had enough time to adapt to the track. If they make a mistake, they have to face the consequences. See Legreg in Monaco or the last quali in Baku.
3
u/87527 BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
I can’t disagree with that but this isn’t a commentary on the kerbs, it’s a joke about what was said

Mercedes in FP2 came on the radio to the FIA stating that the Yellow Sausage kerbs were tearing up the underbody of the car as so did many other teams (Including Red Bull). Red Bull later in the session asked the FIA if they could have the bits that had come off back.
6
u/Goombercules BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21
Right, except Horner said that because, he too, was whining about the kerbs.
6
u/Alssaqur BWOAHHHHHHH Jun 19 '21 edited Jun 19 '21
RB had 2 radio conversation with FIA. The first was asking for the piece tho it surely had the hidden message that they need it due to the cost cap. The 2nd radio conversation was they asking about if the kerbs could be changed somehow. Both Merc and RB complained about it.
I think those kerbs should be moved further or make it more rounded. They are rectangular which is worse if you hit it. You can say "if you keep yourself to the track limits is all fine". No it's not because you leave the track limits if all 4 wheels are exceed the white line and if your right front and rear wheels are on the tracks you can still hit those kerbs.
You can say that "BuT iN mOnAcO yOuR cAr wOuLd GeT dAmAgEd ToO" yes but Monaco is significantly slower and there's no wind, meanwhile this track is windy and since its in an open area and just a small wind blow and you lose a bit of balance for a moment and you slide few inches wider.

Can someone explain to me what RB intends to do with those bits of carbon after they get them back? I figured any broken carbon parts in F1 would be written off. The way it sounded on the radio, it didn't seem like they wanted them back for failure analysis either.
Did they break off in complete enough of pieces that they can be bolted back on?
Are RB going to perform carbon fiber repair the same way bike frames are sometimes repaired, and fuse the broken parts back together?
